EFR 663: Functional Medicine, Genetics Testing, and the Importance of Mental Health and Physical Strength with Dr. Julie Foucher

Welcome Dr. Julie Foucher, MD to talk about how precision medicine differs from conventional medicine and why mental and emotional health is often more important than your lifestyle. Chase then shares his own results and experience using Wild Health's genetics-based healthcare. Dr. Julie Foucher is a former CrossFit athlete, functional medicine expert, and physician at Wild Health, a precision medicine and primary care service offering holistic, personalized healthcare based on your genetics. They provide a comprehensive health analysis using advanced testing and create a custom care plan to help you decode your DNA and unlock better health. Could precision medicine save us from diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease? We think so! In fact, it's been clinically proven… Follow Dr. Julie Foucher @juliefoucher Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning Key Highlights What does it mean to know your baseline? Why is it important to know your baselines and health markers? So many of us don't know our own health markers, but if we do, we'll be better able to sustain our health and prevent disease. Tune in to hear Julie describe this in more detail. What is the different between functional, traditional, and precision medicine? Julie breaks these down for us and explains why you should consider leaning into functional and precision medicine more. Julie speaks on the importance of having a relationship with your doctor as well as the best ways to advocate for yourself and strengthen your patient/provider relationship. She also talks about how to present your health concerns to your doctor to ensure they really hear you. Chase describes how Wild Health helped him discover his predisposition for cardiovascular disease and the subsequent choices he made to improve his baselines and prevent the disease. Julie details why she worked with a mindset coach as a CrossFit competitor and how mindset shifts can significantly improve your physiological health. The external is not always an accurate representation of the internal, meaning you can look healthy on the outside while being very unhealthy on the inside. Listen in as Julie reflects on the unhealthiest, most stressful time in her life: when she entered med school as a top tier CrossFit athlete. EFR 662: Elite Brain Performance Science and Mindset Hacks for Total Human Optimization with Jeff Byers

Jeff Byers is a former NFL player and the current CEO of Amp Human, which offers innovative products that help athletes push the limits on their performance, adaptation, and recovery. With an interest in both sports and entrepreneurship from an early age, Jeff always harbored an interest in finding creative ways to push his boundaries for growth as a human. "I was always thinking about the little things I could do to get better," he says. "I tried to use my brain to work smarter than always just work harder." After retiring from the NFL, Jeff worked for a few years in the finance space before joining an early-stage biotech startup in late 2015. This company had discovered a way to deliver pharmaceuticals through the skin, bypassing the GI system which often limits the body's ability to optimally absorb vitamins and minerals taken orally. Not long after joining the company, Jeff and one of his partners developed a broad vision for a business offering products specifically formulated to optimize human performance, a space in which they saw, at the time, a huge gap in the market. Listen in as Jeff talks all things human performance and optimization and why he refers to it as a "broad spectrum". He also discusses the benefits of Amp Human's flagship product, PR Lotion, and its newly released D+ Lotion. Key Highlights Jeff explains how to differentiate between human performance and biohacking, and how he optimizes his cognitive abilities. Routines are great for introducing discipline; but could they also be a limiting factor to evolving, adapting, and breaking past barriers with regard to human performance? What does Jeff mean by "broad spectrum human performance"? Jeff speaks on the relationship between mindset and human performance. How do Amp Human's products, particularly PR Lotion, help humans break their limits and achieve more? EFR 658: Secrets to Weight-Loss Success and the Roles of Goal-Setting and Motivation For Achieving Lasting Changes in Your Health and Fitness with Michelle Segar

What's the secret to putting together a perfectly imperfect formula to find success in our perfectly imperfect life? Award-winning researcher and health coach Michelle Segar sits down with Chase to talk about what it takes to achieve lasting changes in our health and fitness. She explains why it's so important to build a strong foundation of understanding around human behavior, and how these behaviors influence how we make decisions, big and small, in our day-to-day lives. Michelle discusses the role of goal-setting and motivation on our journey of growth, and how having a strong "why" drives us forward as we make our daily choices. She encourages us to always have self-compassion, and to see the path of lasting change as an opportunity to better not just ourselves, but those we care about as well! Michelle Segar is an award-winning, NIH-funded researcher at the University of Michigan with almost thirty years studying how to help people adopt self-care behaviors, like exercise and healthy eating, in ways that bring meaning and joy and can survive the complexity and unpredictability of the real world. Follow Chase @chase_chewning Key Highlights When is motivation the answer? Does it ever actually serve us or is it always going to be nothing more than a crutch? Getting clear on your "why" is, more often than not, the missing link between making lifestyle changes, and sustaining those changes Michelle explains why she prefers to use the term "daily choice making" instead of "behavior change" Not every big decision needs to be life-or-death. When we're on the verge of making choices related to our health and fitness, having compassion for ourselves is more motivational and effective than judging ourselves harshly. EFR 655: Surviving Major Medical Misdiagnoses, Destigmatizing Mental Health Disorders, and How Anxiety Keeps Us Alive with Sarah Fay

Sarah Fay is the author of the memoir, Pathological: The True Story of Six Misdiagnoses. Pathological explores the consequences of overidentifying with a psychiatric diagnosis and how doing so can lead to self-stigmatization and self-limitation. During this episode of Ever Forward, Sarah discusses mental health diagnoses, from what they are to where they come from, how she lived through six of them, and how we can embrace and understand them better as a society. The stigma that society places on mental illness is well known, but what about the stigma we place on ourselves? Could that actually be more harmful? In Sarah's opinion, yes. Sarah discusses candidly in this episode how being diagnosed with Anorexia as a child caused her to over identify with the diagnosis and attach her thoughts and feelings to it, which led her to believe that she wouldn't be capable of doing many things in life, such as maintain a long-term relationship or hold down a full-time job. Fortunately, Sarah's perspective on her mental health has evolved to where she doesn't feel this way anymore. Her ability to reframe her diagnoses and honor her experiences has been a result of good mental health practitioners, a supportive family, and her willingness to take charge of learning more about her diagnoses and where mental health diagnoses come from. Follow Sarah on Instagram @sarahfayauthor Follow Sarah on Twitter @sarahfayauthor Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning Key Highlights: Sarah discusses the experience of receiving her first psychiatric diagnosis at the age of 12 and what led to it. How Sarah views her diagnoses in hindsight after 25 years in the mental health system. Sarah discusses how a psychiatrist made her think differently about her diagnosis and how she began to investigate the history and origins of mental health diagnoses. How Sarah distanced herself from her diagnosis, freeing herself from self-inflicted limitations Sarah's views on the advantages and disadvantages of receiving a diagnosis, as well as how mental health practitioners can better communicate with patients about their symptoms and treatment options An evolutionary perspective on anxiety: How our brains keep us alive In what ways can a diagnosis empower us?
