Emancipate Your Mind: 041: Raising Ethical Children After Religion with Rachel from Post Mormon Parenting

Many of us were conditioned to believe that religion was the only way to raise ethical, empathic, and responsible children. If you are anything like me, you may have spent weeks worrying about how you were going to raise children with a strong moral compass after leaving high demand religion.Rachel from Post Mormon Parenting really helped me answer this question with her insightful YouTube videos focused on parenting children outside of Mormonism. I realized that there was a wealthy of research and guidance available to me as a parent outside of the confines of religion to help my children develop a strong personal value system and live in accordance with it.In this episode, we explore the natural moral development of children as well as the biggest thing that gets in the way of this development. We talk about how we, as parents, can support children to learn to use critical thinking skills and skepticism to not only understand the world around them, but develop more empathy and compassion in the process._____________________________________________________________________________Did you love what Rachel had to share? Here are some more places where you can find her incredible content! Youtube: Post-Mormon Parenting Instagram: @post_mormonparenting Tiktok: @postmormonparenting Facebook: Post-Mormon Parenting Email: postmormonparentingchannel@gmail.com  _____________________________________________________________________________WANT MORE SUPPORT HEALING AFTER RELIGIOUS TRANSITION?If you’d like to be part of an online community where we take the podcast topics and pull them apart for discussion and further learning, talk about all the religious transition things, and just enjoy each other’s company, join my free “Emancipate Yourself” Facebook group at this link:https://www.facebook.com/groups/370375144009891Or if you want to follow me for religious and psychological insights, commentary on events in the world, links to other people doing great work related to religion, and little windows into my real life, follow me on Instagram or Reddit @EmancipatedMolly , TikTok @EmancipatedTeri , or Twitter @EmancipatedTeri. If you have a question or want to talk about further coaching support, please email me at teri@emancipatedcoaching.com

Emancipate Your Mind: 040: Conversations About the Emotion of Elevation and Transcendent Experiences

Many people who have experienced religious trauma have struggled to understand the reasons they had elevated or even ecstatic feelings while attending a church that was also mentally and emotionally harming their sense of well being. Most were even told that those elevated emotions were evidence that the religious teachings were “true” and that any other feelings of disagreement, hurt, anger, or dissonance of any kind should be disregarded in deference to these elevated feelings. In this episode, we explore what elevated emotions and experiences of transcendence are, how they’ve traditionally served us in an evolutionary sense, and how we can harness them with or without religion to rise to a higher vision and sense of purpose in our personal life. _____________________________________________________________________________WANT MORE SUPPORT HEALING AFTER RELIGIOUS TRANSITION? Emancipate Your Mind: 039: Is The Holy Ghost Ever A Traumatic Doctrine?

While studying about intuition, I began realizing that the way people describe the power of intuition sounded incredibly similar to how they described the gift of the holy ghost or being overpowered by the spirit. As I got curious with my findings and asked questions in the Facebook group (the link is below), I realized that several people had struggled to tap into their intuition both while religious and after religious transition because of the ways they were taught about the Holy Ghost. This episode explores when the idea of religious intuition/ the gift of the holy spirit might cause trauma or self trust wounds. Because there are no resources I can find about this topic out in the broader world, I’d love to hear YOUR insights. Contact me at any of the links below to share your thoughts and experiences. _____________________________________________________________________________WANT MORE SUPPORT HEALING AFTER RELIGIOUS TRANSITION? Emancipate Your Mind: 038: Hello? Is This My Intuition Or Trauma Speaking?

One of the biggest sources of confusion after leaving high demand religion is trying to discern whether the gut reactions you’re having stem from your inner knowing or from your indoctrination. In this episode, we explore ways to tap into your bodily sensations and your emotional experience to tell whether you’re feeling intuition or a fear or shame response induced by childhood trauma, including religious trauma.   ___________________________________________________________________________ WANT MORE SUPPORT HEALING AFTER RELIGIOUS TRANSITION? Emancipate Your Mind: 037: What We Know About How Intuition Works

All of the most innovative and successful people report that intuition is a big part of their success. Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs…even Paul McCartney. It’s no wonder that we’d want to know more about how this process works. This is why in recent years, with the improvements in brain imaging and the expansion of our understanding of neurology, science has turned to trying to understand what intuition is and how it works. While we understand more than we ever have about how intuition might work from a purely scientific perspective, there is still so much we don’t know. Some find answers in the spiritual or divine. In some ways, we have more questions about the process now than we ever have had before. For me, that doesn’t matter so much as knowing that intuition is important for our success and happiness and understanding how our own intuitive voice speaks to us. In this episode we’ll cover what intuition is and discuss the different methods your intuitive voice may speak to you. We’ll also geek out a bit about how you can use the incredible power of your brain to help you become more creative in your problem solving and make more confident decisions going forward.  ___________________________________________________________________________ WANT MORE SUPPORT HEALING AFTER RELIGIOUS TRANSITION? Emancipate Your Mind: 036: Discovering Your Personal Values

Have you ever experienced that feeling of frustration or dissonance when you’re living out of alignment with your core personal values? Are you aware of what your core personal values are? Have you ever given them language? In your religious life, did you find that one of the things you enjoyed was having language for what you valued and believed? Do you feel a little lost or uncertain now that you’re deconstructing or have left religion altogether? You aren’t alone and there is a way to resolve the uncertainty and dissonance. In this episode, we explore how we arrive at fulfillment in our lives when we’re behaving in ways that are in alignment with our core personal values. We also go over a method to begin exploring what those values might be for you and how to give yourself permission to try things on until you find what fits for your life. We were all likely programmed to believe we should value certain things the most, but this episode helps you discover what you actually believe and value so that you can experience more confidence and fulfillment with or without religion in your life. ___________________________________________________________________________ WANT MORE SUPPORT HEALING AFTER RELIGIOUS TRANSITION? Emancipate Your Mind: 035: Cognitive Dissonance

I had never heard the term “cognitive dissonance” before going through religious transition, but once I learned what it was it really helped me understand my experience in the church and my difficulty changing behaviors after leaving. It also helps me have more understanding and even compassion for those who discount my personal experience with religious trauma syndrome and my extensive research on mental health and church history because it creates cognitive dissonance for them against their existing beliefs. In this episode, we talk about how cognitive dissonance happens, how you can recognize it in your own life, and the 4 options you have to resolve the conflict and live a more harmonious life.___________________________________________________________________________A NEW WAY TO HEAL IS COMING THIS WEEK! Emancipate Your Mind: 034: Education or Indoctrination?

This episode was inspired by a debate I had with a childhood friend over the word “indoctrination” a few months ago. She believes that we can’t teach children morals or how to live happy, successful lives without indoctrinating them. That didn’t feel right to me. So, in true nerd fashion, I researched it. This episode is basically what I found from a wide array of sources, both faith promoting and purely scientific.  You get to decide if you believe indoctrination is necessary or if there’s a way to educate others that is just as effective, but perhaps more ethical.___________________________________________________________________________SOMETHING REVOLUTIONARY  IS COMING! Last week I announced that I’m working on a tool that will make healing from religious trauma more accessible and affordable than ever. I believe that healing from religious trauma shouldn’t be a luxury item and should be accessible, affordable, and easy to understand for all. But I’m going to need help to make it as useful to as many people as possible. Emancipate Your Mind: 033: Protecting Yourself From Undue Influence

This week we’re digging into undue influence or mind control. Why? Because one of the bigger concerns I hear from people who have left high demand religion is the fear that they’ll fall prey to deception, misinformation, or undue influence again. So many of us can’t understand why we couldn’t see the coercion clearly and actually believed we were operating from 100% free will when in the organization. And because we can’t understand how we got enmeshed in the first place, we’re worried it’ll happen again. In this episode we discuss what undue influence is and how to help protect yourself or someone you love from being controlled in the future. Knowing how to best keep yourself safe will give you peace of mind and will help you begin to trust yourself more, which will aid in healing from the indoctrination and control you’ve already experienced. This knowledge extends not only to religious control, but control in interpersonal relationships as well.___________________________________________________________________________SOMETHING REVOLUTIONARY  IS COMING! Emancipate Your Mind: 032: OMG! Was I in a Cult?

I hear this exclamation more times than I can count in my line of work.  And while there’s something that makes us shy away from looking at whether we may have been victim to authoritarian control, there’s also something liberating about understanding why we made some of the decisions we did. This podcast looks at Steve Hassan’s BITE Model of Authoritarian Control and talks about my own observations about these control mechanisms in Mormonism. Being aware of what authoritarian control looks like helps us better free ourselves from its grasp now and be aware of these tactics in the future._____________________________________________________ WANT MORE SUPPORT HEALING AFTER RELIGIOUS TRANSITION?
