Back to Calm: Mindfulness and Simplicity
Seventy-five percent of Americans are moderately stressed. Seventy-five percent of Americans are also lonely. More than 33 percent of us sleep less than six hours a night. In addition, 77 percent of us use social media daily and 81 percent of us own a smartphone. Why are these statistics important? Because loneliness, sleep-deprivation, social media use, tech use, and even gut-imbalance—which the Huffington Post refers to as "the modern plague"—are all causes and results of stress. Stress is the reason for at least 75 percent of today's doctor's visits, costing the US billions per year in employee absenteeism, accidents, and illnesses. 9/11, climate change, a historic economic crisis, numerous mass shootings, an inordinate amount of school lockdowns, a foreign attack on our election, a politically divided country, tech-induced anxiety and addiction, and information overload: since 2000, these unique-to-our-time phenomena have created a petri dish of stress in the US, causing a host of emotional and physical ailments. Here's the problem: while the well-researched, psychological theory on attachment tells us that secure attachments to each other and to our nation create resilience to stress, our current American culture is creating barriers, not pathways, to human trust and closeness. Valeria interviews Meg Van Deusen — the author of Stressed in the U.S.: 12 Tools to Tackle Anxiety, Loneliness, Tech-Addiction, and More Meg Van Deusen received her BA in English from Santa Clara University in 1985 and her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Los Angeles in 1992. She has worked with children, adolescents, and adults both in inpatient and outpatient settings throughout the Los Angeles and Seattle areas. Her knowledge of and passion for attachment theory, mindfulness, interpersonal neurobiology, sleep and dreams informs her belief that meaningful connection with ourselves and others helps us handle stress. In her review of the literature and interviews with researchers, everyday Americans, and clients, she has cultivated a first-hand understanding of how our current American culture is creating barriers to human attachments and, therefore, weakening our ability to handle the stressors we face today. She believes that the ancient art of mindfulness, the recent research on happiness, and the simplicity of nature can, among other things, help us build resilience and calm during a time when disconnection has us lost in a worried world. A Path To Becoming Our Best Selves
Valeria Teles interviews Nita Patel — The author of Boss Vibes: Self-Esteem, Success, and the Art of Etiquette. Nita Patel is a speaker, author, and artist who believes in modern etiquette as a path to becoming our best selves. Born in Croydon, UK, as a child Nita would travel frequently between London and Dallas, attending primary school in both places. She was influenced by American and English culture and her parents' deep Indian origin. In her formative years being an amalgam of values and mores, Nita would attempt to mold her persona to fit her circumstance, such as disguising her English accent as a teenager in America to avoid the inevitability of teenage harassment. These types of experiences and coping strategies helped to formulate her strong and resilient character. Through her professional years and prior to her immersion in creative arts, Ms. Patel has over two decades of demonstrated technology leadership experience in various industries specifically with a concentrated focus in health care for 14 of those 20+ years. Her investment in psychology theory and practice is what led her to a deep interest in helping others. As a catalyst, finding additional ways to express her creativity led her to pursue her calling professionally as an artist for the past eight years. She has become deeply and passionately devoted to nurturing others and in building their confidence and brand through speaking and consultative practices. It's Time To Go Inward And Listen!
"This moment right now more than ever is a time for us to rely on our spiritual faith. When we don't have answers, lack direction, or when we feel our leaders don't have our best interest, we have to become the leader within. Go inward & listen. What you hear will heal you. Be mindful that you, my friend, are the guru. No spiritual teacher is your guru. No politician is your guru. There is no one who can give you the sense of magnitude, ease, & certainty that is within you. The time is now for all of us to rise to the highest that is within us so we can be of the highest service to others." — writes KJ Lavan Valeria interviews KJ — the author of WHY Is Your Reason for Being: Realizing a New Dawn for Our Selves, Our Creativity, Our Co-Existence. The Healing Power Of Authentic Expression
Valeria Teles interviews Sharon Wright. She has over 20 years of vocal coaching and music teaching experience both privately and in international schools in Spain. She has enjoyed performing for many years as well as writing songs. Now she approached singing and music holistically and combine it with transformational coaching to discover authentic expression. Sharon discovered her own true connection with her voice and body training with Chris James ('Sounds Wonderful'). "Reconnecting within, to your whole instrument body in harmony, is a powerful healing tool, not only for yourself but also for those who hear you, but the energetic quality of your expression reflects a living way. You cannot live in a way that harms you and then expect to have a healing expression. There is beauty in expressing responsibly" Sharon is into self-care in a big way and she feels it's one of those things we often ignore or conveniently reinterpret in our quest for comfort and distraction. She studied naturopathy in Spain, and although it's not her main business focus, she feels that it supports her with the holistic and natural approach she has and to trust the immense wisdom of the body and its ability to heal. Sharon trained with Animas Coaching and qualified in Transformational Life Coaching and she has never looked back - she loves coaching, especially the way it combines with and enhances her skills and provides a service to others. She has a slightly more corporative hat too. For the last 10 years, Sharon has been working as an HR manager and consultant and was a company director for a business support firm. She feels that this experience has helped her to understand the problems people have with expression. Having witnessed many instances of women feeling unheard in the workplace, she felt pulled to coach in this area, however, she now tends to help female entrepreneurs to bring their creativity and soul into their business and developed a program called "Connect & Express - Your Voice Your Business" To learn more about Sharon Wright and her work please visit: https://www.gorgeoushearts.com/ — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life to the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health.
