Hanna Fiedler on making clothes vs fashion, the importance of fit, and how she gets her inspiration from sushi chefs

In this episode, the guest of Out of the Clouds is Hanna Fiedler (@hanna.fiedler): the creative force behind her eponymous London-based womenswear brand, an up-and-comer in the fashion industry, whos is launching her fourth collection this Spring. Hanna, originally from Bavaria, Germany, started her journey in fashion by learning to sew with her mother, then interning at 16 in the Thalia Theater in Hamburg where she fell in love with the art of tailoring and costume design. This led her to a three-year apprenticeship in tailoring at the Berlin Opera House, before taking her to the London College of Fashion where she honed her craft in pattern cutting. In this conversation, Hanna shares her love of building timeless pieces with character to enhance the wearer's visual personality, as well as why she loves to explore hidden volume, sustainable materials and practices, and why wants to see more transparency in the fashion industry in the future. Her passion for food and the inspiration she gets from sushi chefs were an exquisite surprise, informing the manly Japanese names of pieces in her new collection like Endo Trousers.  A joyful, thoughtful and touching conversation with a young entrepreneur with bright vision. Martin Popplewell on being the real castaway, finding alternative routes and the state of journalism today

This week, host of Out of the Clouds Anne Muhlethaler is joined by journalist, media trainer and ex-broadcaster Martin Popplewell (@Martinpops). Anne had the occasion to work with Martin on a couple of projects, which landed her in the green room of the BBC Morning News a few years ago. However little did she know of his (very) early career in TV which landed him on a deserted island, on purpose it should be noted, and not on any show you may have heard of. They talk about his passion for journalism and politics, his experience of grilling PM  David Cameron on gay rights and the state of the (mainstream) media today. Martin also is an experienced and savvy media trainer, he talks about why it's completely normal to have nerves before going live on TV and yes, we (civilians) should all get media trained if we are to engage with the mainstream media as it's often referred to today. A wide ranging, profound and fun conversation. Enjoy!  ***Show notes: You can find Martin on Twitter  and on LinkedInHis consultancy website is CoconutCommunications.tvThe Blue Lagoon Robinson Crusoe BBChttps://www.channel4.com/https://www.channel5.com/MicronesiaThe Kingdom of TongaFiji Martin's documentary 'The Real Castaway'The mainstream tv show CastawayTV series Shipwrecked UCLAlan Duncan MPCongressman Dick GephardtThe 1992 Clinton Presidential CampaignMartin's interview with David Cameron interview and its coverageGay TimesGloria Steinhem at TedWomen2020Todd Terry  and the song 'Something going on in my soul'Writer Matthew ParrisThe book 'Tricks Journalists Play' ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and  also helps to secure future guests. Lama Hourani on emotional geography, the importance building bridges and becoming a cultural entrepreneur

Lama Hourani (@lamahourani and @lamahouranijewelry) is a Jordanian jewelry designer who grew up in the country's capital, Amman, with artistically-minded entrepreneurial parents who founded private art gallery Foresight 32, when she was a just girl. When a silversmith jeweler came asking for work at the gallery, during the Iraq war, her mother took him in and they turned their small gallery kitchen into a workshop and that is how Lama found her passion. Lama launched her line of silver jewelry in 2000. An artist and designer, Lama talks about her creative process, her studies and friendship with previous guest of the show Paolo Ferrarini, who taught her a class which marked her, about "emotional geography". She talks candidly about her challenges gaining an international reputation as a Jordanian brand and how important it is for her that young Arab men and women are able to see successful brands, like hers from the Middle East, making it big internationally. Named a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum for her commitment in supporting women in Jordan since the early days of her company, Lama offers her views on building bridges between people and cultures and creating universal languages through her designs. The mother of gorgeous twins, Matteo and Dalila, aka Lamoncitos, offers generous insights into her journey in cultural entrepreneurship and, well, the difficulties of juggling growing an independent brand with the demands of motherhood. A beautiful conversation which hopefully will inspire another generation of talented, bright and socially impactful creatives. Meditation: Lovingkindness - Kindness as the water of humanity

Lovingkindness or Metta, is a practice which invites a genuine intention, first directed towards oneself, before turning to others and the whole world, to be healthy, at ease and safe from harm. Far from being a simple wish or a prayer, Metta doesn't change our situations yet it may change how we relate to ourselves and each other over time. This meditation awakens  listening presence, first inquiring about state, then offering relaxation and ease through the body, tuning into the heart area, before then moving into breathing in and out, repeating lovingkindness phrases. Teacher Ruth King says in her book 'Mindful of Race':"Kindness is the water of humanity. Without water, we harden. Kindness is an attitude, an aspiration, and a practice."This episode is brought to you by Le TrenteAre you a purpose-driven individual seeking clarity in your personal narrative? Paolo Ferrarini on content curation, fashion's opportunity and getting closer to nature

This week, I am joined by my good friend, curator, journalist and teacher Paolo Ferrarini (@paolostyleops). Paolo started his career in trend forecasting before becoming a design journalist and teacher at several of Europe's most prestigious schools. He writes for the Cool Hunting and Italian design title Interni as well. We met a few years back in Milan and were lucky to have the opportunity to spend more time together during a couple of press trips (which I organised), back in the days when we could, you know, travel!Paolo indulged me first by telling me about his career, which as it turns out I didn't know so much about, his passion for great craftsmanship and photography, including a course in self-portraiture, pre-selfies. He offers bold thoughts on the future of fashion and how companies should create content out of love, making authenticity a company strategy, rather than merely a philosophy. Paolo, a podcaster himself, tells me about interviewing one of his idols Debbie Millman (the podcast is out this week) for Edit Naples, and his new talk project, the Human Difference talks. We finish on my favorite questions: What is your favorite word? "Incantevole" - enchanting in English - like the song by the band SubsonicaWhat brings you happiness? My family and the people on quick dial in my phone, that's what brings me the most joy. Enjoy!***Show Notes:You can check out all of Paolo's work and projects on his website:  http://paoloferrarini.it/On Instagram @paolostyleops and on Twitter : https://twitter.com/paolostylopsAnd check out his podcast Parola Progetto Interni MagazineThe Cool HuntingRenato Barilli Francesco Morace & Future Concept Lab Elio FiorucciPier Luigi NerviCourreges Salvatorre FerragamoAcademia Costume e ModaMarangoni Institute https://www.polimi.it/en/Cottonificio Albini Cristina NunezThe Self Portrait ExperienceInstagram https://www.instagram.com/The article I quote about limits to growth Documentary : Margiela in his own words https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/13/movies/martin-margiela-in-his-own-words-review.htmlFear of God : https://fearofgod.com/Pyer Moss https://pyermoss.com/Virgil Abloh https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgil_AblohLee Broom Hay Brera Design Days Milan Design Week Base MilanoDebbie MillmanPaolo's interview of Debbie for Cool Hunting and his interview on the new podcast for Edit Design IndabaEdit Napoli MorosoFoscarini Giorgia LupiHuman Difference talksRavi Naidoo Karim RashidJerry Lorenzo Sara Sozzani MainoThe song that best represents Paolo: Sunshine ReggaeIncantevole by Subsonica ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and if you are so inclined, rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts! thank you for listeningFor all notes and transcripts, please visit Out Of The Clouds on Simplecast. Sign up for Anne's email newsletter for more from Out of the Clouds at https://annevmuhlethaler.com.Follow Anne:Twitter: @annvi IG: @annvi This episode is brought to you by Le TrenteAre you a purpose-driven individual seeking clarity in your personal narrative? Tess Privett on faith, Japa meditation and finding joy while chopping an onion

In this episode, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews Tess Privett (@lotuspocus_milano): Tess is a yoga teacher, owner of Lotus Pocus studio in the center of Milan, Italy, who Anne encountered virtually while the two were studying how to launch their podcasts with the help of Seth Godin's Akimbo "Podcast Fellowship". This marks their first time "meeting" over Zoom, despite the fact they had spent a good couple of months that same spring reading and hearing about each other's projects come to life. Tess and Anne share a deep interest in yoga and meditation.  In this interview, they discuss Tess' experience in the four paths of yoga (helpful for anyone new to the practice), including the path that initially interested her the least, the Bhakti or devotional path. She then offers insights on the practical effects of doing one-pointed yogic meditation, like Japa, which she teaches, and shares a personal story about the joy one can feel while chopping an onion!Tess has a deep love of yoga philosophy and she talks about her dharma and how she strives to make the canonical texts practical for everyday, which is the underlying purpose of her podcast, Yoggi(Yoga Oggi = yoga today). If you like yoga, and perhaps philosophy, and speak Italian, jump on the link below to discover.  A beautiful, funny and inspiring conversation. Dapper Lou on style, spirituality and cultural storytelling

Lougé Delcy is an artist and entrepreneur,  most commonly known as photographer and influencer under the name Dapper Lou (@dapperlou).  We got to know each other on a couple of trips to the South of Italy, where he had been commissioned to capture effortless men's style in the height of the summer heat. In this interview, we discuss his early love for fashion, his street style debut and the close relationship and support he gets from his family, in particular his father, Jean. As the conversation progresses, I indulged in asking him about his fabulous shoot with Lauryn Hill, as well as an important trip to Kenya which marked a big transition in his life as an artist, or cultural storyteller. Lou shares his passion about documenting the beauty and joy in life, whether in Brooklyn, Cuba or Morocco. A joy to listen to, as much as to discover. Clementine Desseaux on body positivity, femininity and being Indiana Jones

Rajesh Ramani on emotional resilience and self awareness or sharpening the axe

In this conversation, Rajesh Ramani (on LinkedIn) kindly relates his journey from South India to becoming a spiritual teacher as well as a life transformation coach based in the world renowned Kamalaya Wellness Centre in Southern Thailand. I ask him about the importance of Self Awareness and he tells me a story about a wood cutter, which leads us to discussing the pragmatic need for us to know who we are and how we understand the world. He then brings up some of the mind's restless movements and how that can be the focus of meditation. We touch on how he takes everything into account to support the people who come to him, from mental, emotional and spiritual part of their journey and  he offers advice to business executives in this time of great challenge, cueing them to put an emphasis on human connections. "Stay away from negativity" he advises,  "and invest in relationships." We then move on to talk about how to deal with grief with the backdrop of COVID-19 and how to release guilt, anger, and other associated emotions. His advice: "Let yourself grieve!"Rajesh also goes over the new workshops he will lead online and off line, with the Self Leadership Days , the next one being focused on Emotional Resilience, a skill we probably all need to cultivate in these times.  We bring up goddesses, Kali in particular,  then Carl Sagan “The Pale Blue Dot” and I finish our chat with three questions: What are you reading right now? The Bagavad GitaThe 50 greatest short storiesI know you are partial to Netflix occasionally, what are you watching at the moment? NetflixKim’s Convenience StoreAnd any final words to share with our listeners? You'll have to listen to the episode to discover this answer. Until next time, be well and thank you.Thank you to Conor Heffernan for the music and Joel North for his help in improving our Zoom recording sound somewhat. If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and if you are so enclined, rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts. For show notes and transcripts, please visit Out Of The Clouds on Simplecast. Sign up for Anne's email newsletter at https://annevmuhlethaler.com.Follow Anne:Twitter: @annvi IG: @annvi This episode is brought to you by Le TrenteAre you a purpose-driven individual seeking clarity in your personal narrative?
