Solo Episode - a Change in Leadership Style
In this second solo episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler shares thoughts after writing a post for AVM Consulting. The topic explored is collaboration, or rather the importance of Collaborative Leadership vs the Hero Leadership, the importance of leaning into the wisdom at the meeting table and the real beauty or magic that can be found in the meeting rooms when engaging with everyone present. Anne confesses she is leaning towards change, though she still partially identifies with the old leadership model, while thinking about how to better collaborate to pave the way for a better, more inclusive and successful future - whether at work or in the wider world. ❇ It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit. – Harry Truman❇ None of us, including me, ever do great things. Todd Lynn on fashion as an ideas laboratory and why everyone wants to be a rockstar
In this new episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews Canadian ready-to-wear designer Todd Lynn (@toddlynnlondon).Anne and Todd have known each other since 2000, whilst Anne was starting out at Christian Louboutin in London, and Todd was designing at Roland Mouret. They became close friends over the years and worked together closely, especially after Todd launched his eponymous brand in 2006.Todd is considered rock and roll’s best-kept secret. His clients include U2, The Rolling Stones, Beyonce, The Savages, Lady Gaga, Courtney Love, Janet Jackson and P.J. Harvey. His collection embodies the effortless, dark and beautiful rock and roll cool that his music industry heavy hitters have long appreciated, a hybrid fusion of perfect tailoring and casual deconstruction. The two discuss the joy and the challenges of having your own brand, the future of sustainability, and Todd’s thoughtful opinions around fashion as an ideas system. They touch on Todd's many incredible musical collaborations as he has dressed many a rock star and reflect upon both the glamour and hard work involved, especially when going on tour.Todd also offers his mindfulness rituals, which more recently evolved to include baking cakes. Baking has allowed Todd to “connect to a process”, which is somewhat similar to his meticulous collection development process.Todd then shares thoughts on teaching BA Students at Kingston University, the best advice he ever received from his teacher, the much-missed Louise Wilson, and finishes on the many books stacked up by his bedside. Solo Episode: the one where I talk about my favourite word and Ikigai
In this episode, the first of its kind, host of Out of the Clouds Anne Muhlethaler introduces a solo episode. Unlike the interviews with her varied guests, this is a scripted show, an audio version of the blog post she publishes weekly on her other platform, AVM Consulting (avm.consulting). Called Looking Forward, the blog is a jumping-off point where Anne explores business, the future of work, and like Out of the Clouds, applying a lens of mindfulness. In this show, her exploration is at the crossroads of two questions she asks every guest on the podcast: what is your favourite word? and what brings you happiness? In a moment of procrastination of sorts, she went back to listen to the interview with yoga teacher Chris Magee, whose answer to the final question touched on the Japanese concept of Ikigai. The interview led Anne to a rediscovery of her favourite word - harmony - before exploring musical metaphors and the wonderful leadership advice from conductor Ted Speaker and author Benjamin Zander. Enjoy! *** Selected links from episode:MMTCP course on SoundsTrue.com with Tara Brach and Jack KornfieldIkigai on WikipediaBenjamin Zander Ted Talk on Ted.comOne Buttock Playing, the concept explained on BenjaminZander.comKate Raworth on Doughnut Economics on the Intelligence Squared podcast ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests. April Davila on mindful writing, right view and the importance of consistency
In this new episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews novelist and mindfulness teacher April Davila (@aprildavila). Anne and April got to know each other thanks to their two-year certification training course, or MMTCP, which they completed earlier this year, meeting over Zoom during the closing retreat hosted by their teachers Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. April, a fourth generation Californian shares her journey from scientist to professional writer, to novelist. She offers insights about both her writing process as well as what it was like publishing her first novel, '142 Ostriches', and recounts the wonderful story of how she found her agent - plus the joys and challenges of launching a book in a pandemic. April started offering mindful writing sessions and workshops over the past year and talks about how this turned into a very meaningful project called 'A Very Important Meeting'. The two discuss the surprising benefits of meditation practice to support creativity - something Anne was delighted to discover after she participated in April's last workshop. They go on to discuss how mindfulness concepts like 'right view' help the editing process when writing, and April shares tips and resources for writers, before sharing her current favorite reads. Keris Marsden on naturopathy, self care and following her gut
In this episode of Out of the Clouds, Anne Muhlethaler interviews Keris Masden (@fitterfood), in a first of what may be several interviews with the highly qualified naturopathic nutritional therapist, trainer and lecturer at the College of Naturopathic Medicine. Keris, with her partner Matt Whitmore, runs Fitter Food: a comprehensive platform offering good food, optimal health and tools to get fit and active, and leading long and happy lives.Anne invites Keris to share first the why behind her path into personal training, and then into naturopathy. A very personal journey indeed, in large part motivated by a loved one's cancer diagnosis and a chance encounter with a naturopath at an event. Anne and Keris also share their personal experiences in and around burnout, which leads them to discuss the function of breath in gut health and the importance of finding ways to release the stress cycle in our modern (and currently pandemic) environment. Keris then explains how she first got interested in the Paleo diet, how she thinks it can be adapted and how it supports a healthier lifestyle. Herself a keen cook (and a budding chocolatier), she started creating deliciously nutritious recipes for her clients, which then turned into her first book, 'The Paleo Primer'. She kindly credits her dog Hamish, a Bavarian mountain hound, as her best personal trainer and advisor, who is also a paleo convert. The two finish as always discussing mindfulness tips, the importance of community, favourite books (The Salt Path by Raynor Winn), the best advice Keris received from a friend (watch your gut!) and what brings her happiness. A really wonderful, personal and powerful conversation. Nina Runsdorf on being true to herself and always searching for treasures
In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews the highly creative fine jeweler Nina Runsdorf. The two know each other well, having first been introduced by a mutual friend in 2011, and are currently working together on developing Nina's business. The super chic designer, who has been at the head of her eponymous brand for a little over 15 years, talks first about her roots in family and design. She has essentially been making jewellery throughout her life, first starting at her parent's upstate farm in New York age 11, then in college with a friend, before launching Niana, a small brand with her sister Ann, with the mild support of their grandmother and the rest of the family. After a few years working in retail, then as accessories director and then fashion director, Nina landed in jewelry again, this time in the diamond business. One thing led to another and her own brand was born. In this interview, the fiercely passionate New York native extols the virtues of being true to herself, how lucky she was to be taught by her mother about the importance of searching for treasures in unlikely places and why her jewellery is never too precious to wear - to be worn with a white t-shirt and jeans or with a ballgown. Nina's vibrant and artistic approach extends to her relationship to her clients and her atelier on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She knows what her clients want, because, as she explains, she is her own client!Nina also candidly shares about the challenge of losing her husband and the support she got from friends and family, in bringing up her two daughters Alexa and Kate, while running a brand-new business. Anne and Nina end up as always on Out of the Clouds, discussing what brings happiness. A moving, light and wide-ranging conversation. *** Show notes: Find Nina at Ninarunsdorf.comor on Instagram @NinaRunsdorfJewelryOr Facebook @NinaRunsdorfNina Runsdorf signature Flip Ring Ralph Lauren RhinelanderMickey DrexlerStanley Korshak in Dallas Sliced DiamondsNina Runsdorf Phoenix Collection of Slice Diamonds with enamel Tucson Gem showCouture Jewelry Show in Las VegasNina's article in WWD about pioneering Sliced diamonds and coloured sliceNet-a-porter.comMatchesfashion.comJust One Eye in Los AngelesSerenellaNina Runsdorf on collecting in the Financial TimesNina's closet shot by the CoveteurBreguet, Swiss watches Sarah HughesNina's interview in Forbes about travelNina Runsdorf All That Is CollectionSalvatore Ferragamo, the biography The Cartier book ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests. Chris Magee on his yoga journey - moving from injury to awareness, movement to introspection
Chris Magee (@mageesy), head of yoga at Psycle London, is a teacher's teacher who runs trainings and retreats worldwide (in normal times), when he is not offering what is marketed to be the toughest yoga class in London, aptly named OMFG. The accomplished Irish yogi has had a surprising and compelling path. A keen rugby player in his teens, he then trained as an actor in London and was dutifully sent to yoga by his movement coach while in recovery from several injuries he'd previously suffered on the field. One thing led to another, more yoga and more injuries. He moved from what he referred to as 'ego-driven unawareness' to an entirely new path, one that revolutionised the way he trained himself and how he shared that with other people.Chris holds the highest available E-500RYT from Yoga Alliance and is trained in Hatha, Vinyasa, Budokon, Ashtanga, Rocket Yoga and Acro Yoga, with roughly 2000 hours of training to date.In this conversation, Chris candidly shares his wins and challenges around practice since his early start, his move from acting to training to yoga and how all three talents combined somehow into a 'perfect storm'. Anne and Chris discuss the difficulties that can be expected while teaching in a pandemic, what are the ways in for beginners away from a studio, and what it's like to hold space for all different types of students to find what they need out of the practice. Not only is Chris an incredibly experienced teacher with much to share, but he also knows how to make his story come to life - we can only imagine how fun this must be for the students in his yoga class. Sri Ganesh Santhiram on being bold, data as guiding light and empowering teams to drive success on digital
In this episode of Out of the Clouds, Anne Muhlethaler speaks to Sri Ganesh Santhiram, a digital marketing and e-commerce leader with a passion for putting customer experience and message first. Ganesh shares his journey from being a football-loving kid growing up in Brighton to his MBA in Malaysia and how being at the forefront of data and insights offered him a way into digital and e-commerce. As someone focused on creating data-driven, consumer-centric strategies to drive digital growth, he goes over the challenges and opportunities for brands around digital transformation. Anne and Ganesh also discuss what they see as some of the roadblocks that hinder digital success for most businesses: from the roles people play in organisations, misalignment, a lack of empathy towards the client, poor creative messaging or lack of understanding of the digital environment at the leadership level. They also exchange and celebrate the brands and creatives that are able to translate or transcend the retail store experience to offer immersive online experiences. The two end on Ganesh's sporting passions, how football taught him to focus on a team's common goal and his steps towards mindful mornings. A bright and insightful conversation.***Show notes: You can find Ganesh on LinkedIn CricutArticle by Ganesh for Luxury Society And this one on Data as guiding light for brandsClubhouseSpark AR CPMThe Social Dilemma on NetflixVictorinoxChef Massimo Bottura on InstagramThe Cartier website The AkinFierce Conversations book by Susan Scott The Who, the A Method for hiring Patagonia Mr PorterRaphaOasis 'Wonderwall'Manchester United football teamBrighton & Hove Albion Football teamPremiere LeagueCreativity Inc the bookPatagonia, ArgentinaGary Vaynerchuck***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests. Meditation: Breath as gateway to the present moment
It's often said that breath is the language of the nervous system. Short enough to fit in at any time, this Mindfulness of Breath guided meditation starts off with setting an intention for practice before turning to explore the sensations of the breath, as a gateway to becoming more intimate with ourselves in the present moment. ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find the podacst and also helps to secure future guests. Dr Andrea Wojnicki on skilled communication, word of mouth, and the importance of personal brand
In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler is joined by Dr Andrea Wojnicki, founder and chief talker of 'Talk About Talk', an online platform as well as a podcast. From early experiences in brand marketing at Kraft Foods, Andrea, a self-confessed life-long learner talks about how she got into academia and earned herself a Doctorate of Business Administration (Marketing) from Harvard Business School, where she focused her research on consumer psychology and the fascinating subject of 'word of mouth'. Since then, she has been keenly exploring why people talk.Over the course of the conversation, Andrea shares a lot of practical advice on interpersonal communications, and touches on how she supports business professionals and executives in becoming more skillful with their communication, which in turns supports their personal growth and career. We explore some of her favorite subjects, including personal branding, archetypes, and the three superpowers we all want to develop in our communication skills. Andrea is also a talented painter, so we veer off to discussing the importance of creative outlets and how she gets into a state of flow, sometimes even on Zoom. It was a joy to record this episode, so we hope you will find as much enjoyment in listening to it. ***Show notes: You can find Andrea at TalkAboutTalk.comFollow her on LinkedinOn Instagram @talkingabouttalk and on Twitter @dr_wojSign up to the Talk About Talk newsletter to get the FREE course '5 email hacks'Martha Stewart Case from HBSThe Pokemon Go HBS business case Coach Tara Mohr and her book 'Playing Big'Amy Cuddy's Ted Talk on how languages shapes who we areAkimbo's Podcast WorkshopProfessor Jerry Zaltman The Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation technique ArchetypesThe altMBAThe Tall Poppy Syndrome Andrea's teacher, Susan Fournier 1000 True Fans, an essay by Kevin Kelly Andrea's Painting website A Promised Land, by Barack Obama'Personal History, by Kathrine Graham - Pulitzer Prize winner 1998 (autobiography) ***If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe for more, and consider writing a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, it helps people find us and also helps to secure future guests.
