How to Train Smarter for Your Next Ultra with Jacob Puzey

Whether you’re training for you first or 50th Ultra, getting the right tips on how to train smarter and more efficiently from a coach is always helpful. And in this episode, I was joined by one of the best running coaches out there, Jacob Puzey! Jacob is the Director of Peak Run Performance, which is a coaching company designed to help runners achieve their big goals (without having to do any of the guess work themselves). Jacob is also an accomplished runner himself, finishing in the top 10 of the 2021 Javelina Jundred and winning multiple races in the past. Plus, he’s coached tons of runners to the podium as formerly a collegiate-level Cross Country coach, and now as a running coach to the public. In this episode, Jacob and I discuss simple tips to make your training way more effective, what you should be aware of if you’re thinking of working with a coach, and how to keep yourself in the game during brutal training blocks. Also, Jacob’s brother, Tommy Rivs, has been unfortunately and heartbreakingly battling cancer since 2020. If you know Tommy, Jacob, and their family you know that this couldn’t have happened to a more undeserving guy and family. So, we discuss ways you can support #TeamRivs in the beginning of the podcast as well. Special thanks and much love to Jacob for this special episode! How to Destroy Limits with Amputee Runner and Cancer Survivor, Jacky Hunt-Broersma

There’s a powerful message along the lines of: “it’s not what you go through in life that defines you, but rather, it’s how you react to it that does”. And today’s guest is the epitome of that saying as she has defined herself as one of the most inspiring human beings on the planet. Today, I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Jacky Hunt-Broersma, who is not only an accomplished ultra-runner, but is also a cancer survivor and an amputee runner who is a world record holder. On top of that, she is also a loving mother and wife. And in the midst of recording this episode, she is currently accomplishing an incredible feat of human endurance: running 100 marathons in 100 consecutive days. So damn inspiring. In this episode, Jacky shares how she was able to keep moving forward despite all the adversity she’s faced in her life, how to best think about problems when they arise (in both ultrarunning and life), and how she’s able to maintain her discipline to accomplish her biggest goals. Prepare to be inspired by this one. The Gift of Autism Helping Zach Reach His 100 Mile Dreams, With Zach Bates

Zach Bates is a 19-year old ultramarathon runner, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 4. But despite that, he hasn’t let that diagnosis define who he is or mask the incredible spirit that he shows every single day. Zach recently achieved his goal of completing a 100-mile race before he hit 20 years old at the Cold Water 100 in Goodyear, Arizona. And what is incredible about that was that he had set that goal when his longest race was only a 5k. Along his journey leading up to the race, he’s completed multiple ultramarathons and trail races, and spent hours on the trail training for his moment. In this episode, Zach shares his journey into ultramarathons, what his training was like, the recap of his 100 mile race, and a look inside his amazing mindset that helps him pursue his dreams and break through difficulties. This is a truly inspiring episode! We’re also joined by Nickademus De La Rosa, Zach’s Running Coach and a Barkley Marathon winner, who shares his perspective of what it was like to coach Zach during the entire journey.
