There's one word that consumes hearts and mouths during Christmastime. It's spoken with enthusiasm. Smiles adorn its presence. A tiny word, a mighty power. So many of our words uttered during the holiday season bring Christmas to life. We sing songs filled with words of wonder and hope. We repeat scriptures that leave a mark on our hearts. You can be out shopping checking that list twice as everyone else is checking it too making sure that all the GIFTS are nice. You go to a party and what do you bring? A gift. What is it with this tiny word that consumes our actions yet distracts our hearts? What would your list look like if God asked you to write it down? A better job Patience Money to pay the bills Family vacation New car And I wonder what Mary would have given Him the year she gave birth to His Son. Patience Discernment Grace Hope Love Gift is defined as a thing given willingly to someone without payment; a present. At Christmas we give gifts. The best gift ever given came from God. What do you want for Christmas? The question echoed by so many couples. The presents are nice. But the time spent together is more precious. All I want for Christmas is you! You know the famous song by Mariah Carey. In fact, you are probably humming it in your head. It's a catchy, upbeat melody that lingers in your heart. It's the heartbeat of the season; what you really want for Christmas. Most of us would enjoy a gift or two under the tree, but ultimately, love is what we are searching for. Think about why you watch the Christmas Hallmark shows or the reruns of White Christmas, Elf, Home Alone, Santa Claus, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, It's a Wonderful Life, and Miracle on 34h Street. All of these carry a theme of the real reason for this season. LOVE!!! Why only experience through technology? Make time to experience the season together. The last few days before the holidays might get a little intense. You may say a few things you didn't mean. You may even get frustrated by the hustle and bustle of the season. I was just out yesterday. And waiting in line to get gas, I was cut off by an older woman who not only cut me off, but cut off 5 other customers. Seriously! You need to protect each other this season. Protect your hearts. Play on the same team. Don't let your love for each other get tucked away. Don't just focus on the children and extended family members. Let your hair down, live life messy, and fall in love all over again. We need to take a page out of Mary and Joseph's book. Joseph remained obedient to God in serving and loving Mary. He could have run the other direction and said he changed his mind. But he did not. He took their relationship very seriously. And Mary, she was put in a position where she could have lost the love of her life. So what do you want for Christmas as a couple? The K.I.S.S. ~ All I want for Christmas is you! Make Christmas not about all the stuff that you have to wrap or wait to be delivered by the Amazon Prime truck. The element of surprise is the best at Christmas! The children wait with anticipation as their imaginations go wild. What will this year bring under the tree? Hearts skip a beat for that long, awaited day. The list made and checked twice to make sure everything was oh so nice! Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? All that they could have wanted is right before their eyes. Think back to when you were growing up. A time when you wanted something so special and you got it. Fast forward to our children now. My kiddos from a very young age would make their lists. And then we would make sure to add to their lists as to what they wanted to give those who have served them (i.e., teachers, postmaster, garage people, etc.). There's something about the element of surprise. You remember more deeply. You are rooted more personally. You are more emotionally invested. God did that for you and me with Christmas. He didn't have to give us His Son. God could have done something totally different. Not sure what it would have been. But He didn't have to give us Jesus the way He did. But He did! The element of surprise. When you look at how you parent and how you lead your family, where does the element of surprise come in? The K.I.S.S. ~ Use the element of surprise! I want you to think about ..... What can God teach you this Christmas about loving your family more? How can you serve your family without telling them everything? What if a gift was an extension of you? No strings attached, only the gratitude and love of your heart. Give without a thought of getting. That is the spirit of Christmas! It seems really strange that with everything we give, we get something in return. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? We buy groceries and get a receipt. We say "I do", and get a ring. We turn on the water and get a bill. But Christmas is not like that. We give our time and expect nothing in return. We give a donation in a red kettle bucket without getting a donation receipt. We bake the extra sweet treats that come only once a year and don't get anything but a hug. Why is Christmas so different than every day? Because it doesn't have to be. Christmas doesn't come just once a year. That is what makes Christmas so magical and timeless. It's for you every day. When you are tired and worn, you can rely on the gift given at Christmas. When your heart is broken in two, you can lean on the gift of Christmas. When a celebration is near, you can dance more. The spirit of Christmas is a gift from God sending His son here on earth to save and give us eternal life. A gift given without a thought of getting anything in return. The K.I.S.S. ~ Give without a thought of getting! God would love to have your heart. But He gave you free will. You have a choice to accept Jesus as your Savior. Give without a thought of getting. If God can give without a thought of getting, don't you think you can do the same thing in return? How would your life change if you could give without a thought of getting? Do you think ..... You would make different decisions? Your attitude would improve? Your business approach would change? Your marriage would improve? Your relationship with God would deepen? Each Christmas tree has a story based on where the tree became a part of our lives. We've moved so many times, trees tell stories. Surely, you can't leave out the Christmas wreaths. Oh, how many doors they have hung upon over the years. Then, the ornaments share the good news of what each child brought to us throughout the years. Stars from Christmas pageants, snowmen from classrooms, the nativity from lightbulbs. You'll have to ask my oldest about that project. But believe it or not, we still have that and the bulbs aren't broken. Christmas is built on stories shared over the years based on one belief; the birth of Jesus Christ. Within those beliefs are traditions created to remember this important time in our history. When you look at your wellness journey, it too is built on stories shared over the years. You were raised a certain way with influences as to your activities, eating habits, and the people around you helped to create an environment that set you on your wellness journey. For some, those are awesome traditions. Ones you want to keep for a lifetime. For others, the traditions of health are not real good ones. The traditions become more of a burden. Where are you in your traditions for your wellness? What belief do you carry that sustains goodness or attracts badness? You have the opportunity to decorate your life the way you know you need to. Give yourself the present of wellness every day. Decorate your life with hope! The K.I.S.S. ~ Decorate your life with hope! Earlier, I mentioned Christmas wreaths. Each one is so unique, decorated for a particular season on a specific door. Think of how there is no beginning and no end to a wreath. It just comes and goes, round and round. So does your wellness journey. It's a wreath with no beginning or end. You get to choose what you want on it; goodness or badness. It's a continuation; a journey of a belief shared throughout the years with morsels of sweat and good treats. It's the most wonderful time of the year! You get to choose what traditions you want; the habits that fuel your every day. So let's decorate your life with hope! What ornaments will brighten your days? What will give you a boost in your day? For example, drinking lots of water or more than you currently doing. Maybe it's eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. What color lights will you use? What will sustain your energy? More intentional movement. Maybe it's stretching more. What bow will make you sparkle? That's the motivation. That's your belief. What goes around comes around. The wreath has no beginning or end. You have a choice to choose what you want to do. You matter!!! As you prepare for the Christmas and holiday celebrations, remember what you are creating. A tradition to fuel your life! "Be present. Clutter holds back last-minute invites to your home. Perfection brings more self-induced attacks. Why would you put yourself down during a time of hope and love? Do the best you can! No one is complaining or comparing but you. Most people are hyper-focused on what they need to do to get through the holidays. Juggling the shopping lists Last-minute projects at school for the kiddos Checking the bank account twice Hoping a certain person does or doesn't come for the family gathering Everyone has their own drama. So there's no reason for you to add to your own drama. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas everywhere you go. Do the best you can! As you take a moment to reflect on all that has happened this year, remember what you have accomplished. Celebrate the goodness in your life. Don't focus so much on what is still left to accomplish. That can wait until another day. Start believing in what's possible. Reach for your dreams wherever you are now. The K.I.S.S. ~ Do the best you can! Guess what? Christmas is going to come whether you're ready or not. So stop worrying so much and enjoy the process. Give yourself time to rest and see the awe in children's eyes. Look at the Star at night and imagine you were the one visiting the stable. Do you think you would have been worried about how you looked or if everything was prepared? No! You would do the best you could at that time. The same goes for today. God asks only what you can give Him. He doesn't look side-to-side or under your bed for dust bunnies. He wants your heart. And so does everyone else. Christmas is about family! Coming together and enjoying each other. Who cares about how the tree is decorated, where you bought your ham, or how many presents you didn't duplicate. Do the best you can! You have this moment to live your life, love who is in your presence, and to impact the world you touch. So what do you want from today? Do you want to keep yourself tethered to the drudges of complaining and comparison? Or are you willing to put aside what the world can dish out every day, and hone in on the hope and love of this season? "Do the best you can until you know better. Life is filled with so many decisions. Some are easy to make. Others leave us speechless. You are one decision away from a totally different life. It's estimated that we make 35,000 decisions in a day; choices to do something. That means the average person makes 1 decision every 2 seconds (assuming you sleep 7 hours a day). But some require more in-depth understanding. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, had a major decision to make. Matthew 1:18-25 (NIV) 18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"). 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. "Questions draw the spotlight! However, a decision moves us forward." ~ Kristianne Wargo Joseph needed direction. So he decided to get answers! The K.I.S.S. ~ Get answers! Joseph asked the tough questions. He tried to get the answers. REFINE what you are searching for. ILLUMINATE/HIGHLIGHT your concern. The answers LEAD you to one decision. Ultimately, you have to also know that once you get answers, then you must follow through with your decision. "Life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make makes you." ~ John C. Maxwell That choice involves one decision. You don't have to worry or fret the unknown. Simply make a choice, a decision. Be obedient to your discovery and answers. Remember, you are one decision away from a totally different life. You now have direction. "Be present. Be incredible. Why is it that you don't always see your path? Maybe the details aren't present, but the past is. The future doesn't look bright unless you begin breaking barriers. Many discussions echo the same sentiment that none of this makes sense. You want something different, but the timing is off. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Why God won't You give me the details of what I'm supposed to be doing? If I only understood Your reasoning, then I wouldn't have anything to fret or fear. I would understand why I'm in this situation. Why I lost my job. Why my marriage is on the rocks. Why we have to move. Come on Lord. Sounds fair to me. An internal heart to heart struggle with God that never seems to get an answer. Therefore, the walls start rising up. Lord, if I can't understand, then why should I believe? The only certainty is the uncertainty of what tomorrow brings. "There's clarity in the past, confusion in the present, and uncertainty in the future." So if you rely on clarity, your walk remains in the past. Is that where you really want to continue your journey? The uncertainty in the future is simple. You can't see it, so no reason to believe it. There's no guarantee. You have no idea what the future holds. However, you can choose the present. This is the moment to create your now. Yet there you find confusion. Why. So. Many. Speedbumps? Life should not be so complicated. Where are the details? What are the next steps? Why can't I see the big picture? Because if you knew the whole story, you wouldn't reach tomorrow. Life is about breaking barriers; going against the grain of expectations to live out the promises of God. The K.I.S.S. ~ Breaking barriers! What if you knew 100% how your life would turn out and that all your dreams would come true? What would you do differently? Would you rise early to keep the focus and set your intentions for the day? Or, would you hit the snooze button to get 10 more winks of interrupted shut-eye? Most of us are quick to move on when there is clarity; what is guaranteed. But are slow when there are too many questions. We want the details. In fact, we demand them, especially from God. How many times have you cried out, "Why me, Lord?". Did you ever think that God's plan is better than yours? And in trusting Him, you are willing to do what He asks without question? It seems more than strange. You want answers, but God does not give you the details. You may not have the definitive clarity you want, but you have faith! God doesn't do whatever each morning the sun rises for you. He has determined your plan and set it in motion. The question is.... Are you willing to move even without the clarity, focus, and details? "The hope of what's to come is in your faith not by your clarity. You must not see in order to know." "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." ~ Proverbs 3:5-6 It's time to step out of the way and let God begin breaking barriers. Trust in Him knowing that He knows more. Let me ask you this question. What if you had all the answers and details. If God handed you the blueprint to your life, would you follow through with God's dream, or would you still stop and question? I know what I would do. Initially, I would want control. But that's the problem. We need to relinquish our control to gain clarity for today. That doesn't mean you'll have all the answers. But you will have exactly what you need when you need it. Think about Mary and how she was told by an angel that she would bare the Son of God. Yet she is a virgin. How can this be? God was breaking barriers to save you from the beginning of time. Why question Him now? Trust in what He reveals in His timing. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." ~ Jeremiah 29:11 Leave the details to God. Let Him do the heavy lifting. You follow through with what you know is true. The stress of the holiday season can wreak havoc in a marriage. Don't let the sun go down on your anger in between tomorrow. Your relationship is worth more than any argument. Whether you're a Christian or not, many are familiar with the Bible verse, "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry." (Ephesians 4:26) Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? The holiday season can be a bit more trying as the financial hardships are increased due to giving gifts. Now you don't have to involve money in order to have an argument. You can be crabby just because you woke up before the alarm. It's ridiculous how we let something so trivial set us off. But this is REAL life! This in between tomorrow is SO vital to the health of your relationship. If you keep stuffing grumbles and grudges in your daily stockings, all you're gonna get out is more frustration and more fiddlesticks. What happens is by allowing anger to overtake our every day, we are giving up the prospect of a better tomorrow. We are holding ourselves hostage punishing not our spouses, but our own hearts. When you read the Bible verse Ephesians 4:26, it doesn't say anything about anyone except YOU! "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. ~ Ephesians 4:26 In between tomorrow, it's about YOU!!! A marriage takes two, but anger takes only one! As much as it's nice to blame your spouse for the marriage's shortcomings, the anger situation is not about your spouse. The anger is about YOU! Basically what God is saying....You can't be in between tomorrow and have anger. Anger begins to harden the heart! Have you ever seen a log out in the woods where, over time, it begins to rot away? The decaying is a long process, but it eats at the very core of the log. When the rot has consumed the log, it disintegrates. That's exactly what happens when anger takes over your heart. So don't let the sun go down while you're in between tomorrow. Rise up and love in between tomorrow. The K.I.S.S. ~ Rise up! Even when the days are long and the joy is fading, rise up! Let your heart be glad regardless of your circumstances. You can choose to fly on the wings of doubt and fear. You can let your confidence rot away. You can embrace anger as your best friend. But where will that get you? Deeper into the darkness drowning out all possible rays of hope. Tarnishing smiles gathering the dust of sadness. A thousand miles of a road well-traveled. Rise up! Let your excuses and circumstances be tamed by the light of God, His presence. "Rise up and shine, for your light has come. The shining greatness of the Lord has risen upon you." ~ Isaiah 60:1 In between tomorrow is a pause for a better today. It's an opportunity to grow personally and spiritually. Don't let your anger stew in the night. Your marriage is worth all your might. Let the hopes for tomorrow bring forgiveness in the darkness. Your heart will understand what's to come when you are willing to take a stand. Anger is not for you in between tomorrow. "Live. Love. Children can push you to your limits regardless of their age. Whether it's the holidays or every day, what do you do when stuff hits the fan? You can be running out the door ten minutes late to school, dance, or basketball practice. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? The tension grows and your blood pressure increases by ten points. Why does life have to be so complicated? Can't the children just be ready when you give them the five-minute reminder? Well, you know that answer. Of course not. If only the children would cooperate all the time, life would be easier! I think it's a way to remind us how crazy we drive God. When we don't pay attention the first time (or second or five-hundredths time), don't you think God would like to raise His voice at us. But what amazes me is that God doesn't raise His voice most of the time. Instead, He whispers to get our attention. But if we're not careful, we won't hear Him. If we're not watching, we will not see Him. Children do the same thing. They think they know everything. They close their ears pretending not to hear. They ignore the obvious just because they can. Who needs to be reminded twenty times that you are leaving for practice? Well, obviously they do because they're never ready. Between the yelling and arguing, it can get really LOUD in the home to the point that no one is listening anymore. How do you maintain your sanity and leadership in your home when stuff hits the fan? Take it from the coach, "No one ever drowned in sweat." ~ Coach Lou Holtz The K.I.S.S. ~ No one ever drowned in sweat! Life is never going to be easy. There are lots of things that you can do to make it simple. But implementing simple takes consistency and fortitude. You have to be willing to go the extra mile when the going gets tough. Reflect on what's best. Take a step back. Breathe! What is the goal of the situation at hand? Listen to all sides. You need to know your child's point of view. Giving him/her the time to express this doesn't mean you are agreeing with them. Whisper a resolution. Or you can give a resolution with a giggle.
