Ep: 197 – Draft, FA, Senior Bowl, Dean Blandino, And Coaching Hires, Oh My… – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case pull out all the stops. Chris brings back his report from his trip to the Senior Bowl, we break down who is jumping into the Free Agency pool, Take an early look at the draft, Dean Blandino joins us to talk about the call in the New Orleans Saints and LA Rams game, and Jeff Risdon props his sick body up, and loses his pants, to talk about the Detroit Lions new QB coach hire. Oh, and Justin Rodgers makes a brief (hilarious) appearance prior to joining us for some long form stuff in an upcoming show. It’s an epic show this week!
The Detroit Lions Podcast Brings Out The Big Guns
Things start off normally enough, Chris gets a surprise shot in on Case (with some help from Justin Rodgers of the Detroit News) and they break into a discussion about free agency and the players being added to the availability pool. There are some nice pieces in there that could really help the Detroit Lions. There is one in particular that has Case’s radar pinging – and it’s hard to disagree with him.
From there we talk about the sad situation with Trevor Bates. Hopefully he gets some help and everything can smooth itself over for everyone. No one is a winner here.
Next we start breaking down some draft scenarios and prospects and how things may have changed with the hiring of Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell. There’s a new sheriff in town, and that means a new approach. Bevell shared some great thinking during the hiring process. The Detroit Lions Podcast can’t wait to see what he does with the talent on this team.
From here, Chris does his report on what he saw and experienced at the Senior Bowl this year. Chris brings you to the “Elephant Walk” and talks about who he sat with, and his approach to evaluation this year. He also breaks down his top players to watch based upon their performances at practice last week. There’s a lot of good info here on a number of players – some of who just might wind up on the Lions roster.
Dean Blandino Joins Us Again
Dean Blandino joins the Detroit Lions Podcast to discuss the controversial non-call in the LA Rams and New Orleans Saints game. He breaks down the play itself, the role of the officials, and what happened on the field. He also takes time to discuss what will happen within the ranks of the officials and how things may and may not change going forward. After that we break away from talking about officiating and discuss the Super Bowl LII match up. Dean predicts a winner you never expected.
Lastly, with the breaking news about the hiring of Sean Ryan as QB Coach for Matthew Stafford, Chris and Case call up the sickened corpse of Jeff Risdon and get him to weigh in on the hire. Suffice it to say, he’s quite the happy camper, despite his illness.
This episode of the Detroit Lions Podcast is jam packed. Don’t miss it.

Ep: 196 – Free Agency and Draft Talk Begins – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case are joined live in studio by Jeff Risdon. Jeff is in town to cover the Shrine game, and from there he and Chris will be heading off to cover the Senior Bowl and dig deep on key draft prospects for the Detroit Lions. Case does Free Agency, and evidently there was some coach hired that we should talk about…
Detroit Lions Podcast Welcomes Darrell Bevell
The biggest piece of business this week is to cover the hiring of Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell. To say that everyone is surprised would be an understatement. The beat media folks knew someone was coming but had no idea who. It was fun to watch everyone scramble, research, speculate, and finally report on what he brought to the team. Masterful work by the Detroit Lions in keeping things quiet and getting their guy. Risdon also talks about who else might have wanted him but *didn’t* wind up getting him. Overall, this looks like a good hire for the team. One which brings optimism for the future. Don’t worry, the Detroit Lions Podcast counts the ways.
After that we get our first cut on Free Agency from Case. He finds himself lining up very closely with Justin Rodgers’ thinking from the Detroit News. He takes us through a number of positions and points out where there are possible fits, where there are gaps between needs and player availability, and which players we just might need to pay attention to. Jeff Risdon drops a little nugget on a CB to keep an eye on as well. Good stuff, the Detroit Lions Podcast fires up your Free Agency thinking.
Draft Coverage Goes Big
From there we move into Jeff’s coverage of the Shrine Game practices this week. He gives a great breakdown of what the game is all about, some famous names who have been here before, and who to look for. He also has a few fun stories about some player/coach interactions. Don’t overlook this game. Detroit Lions like Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner, and Quandre Diggs all came up out of the Shrine Game. If you care about the draft, it’s definitely worth your time.
The Detroit Lions Podcast also lets loose on the expanded coverage you’re going to see from the Senior Bowl. Jeff, Sandman, and Chris will all be there bringing you the latest news livestreamed from the sidelines in a Daily Diary as well as next week’s podcast in a video format. We might just find a special guest to join us… Subscribe to our YouTube channel and enable notifications to see it all happen live.

Ep: 195 – Lions OC Hunt Continues – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take ahold of the microphones while Jeff Risdon is away covering the Jim Bob Cooter interview with the Cleveland Browns for Brownswire – poor guy. Fear not, the boys fight through Case’s failing internet connection to bring you the most important and pertinent Detroit Lions news today. They also talk about another leap that the show will be taking as we push to bring you the best Lions content in the most engaging formats.
Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Hires and Fires
The first order of business this week is to cover the recent front office move at the Vice President of Football Operations position. Bob Quinn hire Matt Harriss is out and Mike Disner is in. Chris calls an immediate Super Bowl victory as a result. Case tempers Chris’s enthusiasm with talk about finance, the time value of money, and spreadsheets. Suffice it to say, we won’t be hearing much from Matt in the coming year.
Then we get into the boring stuff and talk about Offensive Coordinator candidates. Things seem pretty quiet around the team right now and everyone knows, that’s when a Lion strikes. The Detroit Lions Podcast discusses some of the previous possibilities that were mocked the Lions way, many of which have now been hired elsewhere. Still a pretty wide open group of candidates to choose from, and no real indications from the team as to where they may be looking.
After pillorying Michael David Smith of PFT, we look ahead to next year’s schedule. As of today the breakdown of who we play and where we play them seems to favor the Lions bringing us the more difficult teams at home and some of the easier ones on the road. There is a lot of offseason to go, but it felt right to take an early look.
Heading Around The Division
After that we take the longest look ‘Around the Division’ that we’ve had in the show’s history. We start with the Chicago Bears and have a little fun at their expense as a result of their elimination from the playoffs last week. From there we walk over the Green Bay Packers and their new head coach hire on the way to poke the Minnesota Vikings a bit.

Ep: 194 – The End Of The Cooter Era – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris, Case, and Jeff “the Riz” Risdon discuss the latest Detroit Lions news. We cover the game against the Packers and also kick off our “Play with the Podcast” events. We also share the final positions from the Detroit Lions Podcast Fantasy Football League. From there we go in-depth on Jim Bob Cooter, what happened, what it means, and analyze the top candidates. We also break down other changes we might see in the coaching staff, including the Defensive Coordinator. Finally, we try to quell the Stafford trade talk.
Detroit Lions Podcast Talks Wins, baby!
The first order of business is the big win for the Lions over the Green Bay Packers. Even with three of us hosting, we forgot to mention Matt Prater’s amazing touchdown pass. We take time to talk about Zach Zenner, how he might fit going forward, and how this team has obviously not given up on their coaches.
From there we bring back “Play with the Podcast” where you can join us on Xbox and get some high quality gaming time in with us. We also break down the big winners of the Detroit Lions Podcast Fantasy Football League and congratulate them on landing in the money.
Detroit Lions Part With Jim Bob Cooter
Next we discuss the separation between Jim Bob Cooter and the Detroit Lions. Jim Bob’s contract ended on the 31st of December, and the team decided not to renew with him. This allows Cooter to take part in any number of interviews (there is significant interest) and the Lions to move forward with improving their offensive capabilities. That discussion wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t vet a number of available candidates and weigh how they might fit within the organization and what they bring. Also, we discuss the possible effects on Matthew Stafford.
Also, the Detroit Lions Podcast talks about the likelihood of hiring a new Defensive Coordinator. He makes the case as to why it might be “on the table” and why Matt Patricia could be the biggest beneficiary of such a move. Don’t worry, Coach Pasqualoni likely wouldn’t be going anywhere…
Stop Talking About Trading Matthew Stafford
Additionally, we discuss the trade rumors that have swirled around Matthew Stafford and share a bit of insider info on the team and how the Detroit vs. Everybody mindset might be alienating players. We’ll be going more in-depth on that in future episodes.

Ep: 193 – Lions Look To The Green Bay Packers – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take on the latest in Detroit Lions news and provide insights and opinions on a number of hot topics. We’ll look at the Vikings game, the draft, Matt Millen’s current situation, the 9-7 Bob Quinn quote, info about the meta around a new Offensive Coordinator and a whole lot more.
Detroit Lions Podcast Gets Going
This week we begin by reviewing the Lions loss to the Minnesota Vikings. We discuss the vast difference between how the defense started the game vs how they finished. We also talk about the abysmal offensive performance put on display. There is no reason to think Jim Bob Cooter will survive to coach another season in Detroit.
From there we take a look at the draft and some of the top 1st round possibilities for the Lions. Case shares his thoughts and we discuss how we are going to dive in on our coverage this offseason. We’ll cap pre-draft coverage off with the amazing Detroit Lions Podcast Annual Draft Party/Spectacular. We’re putting a lot into the prospects this year to help you get the best info possible heading into what could be one of the most important drafts in the Detroit Lions recent history.
Matt Millen Gets A Life-Saving Gift
From there we move on to discuss Matt Millen and his current situation. You may not like him as a GM, but he is a part of the Detroit Lions football history. We wish him the very best recovery possible, and maybe one day we can get a redemption arc for him and the Lions.
All that isn’t even scratching the surface. The Detroit Lions Podcast covers the Bob Quinn, “9-7 isn’t good enough” quote. Next, we cover the story about potential offensive coordinators and a narrative that’s brewing around Matt Patricia and his thinking there. We also take a look to the upcoming Green Bay Packers game, and a whole lot more.

Ep: 192 – Lions Look To The Minnesota Vikings – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris is joined by a fan favorite, Jeff Risdon, as a result of Case being ill. We cover a number of topics this week including the Bills game, Lions past talent finding success elsewhere, we provide a Detroit Lions Podcast Fantasy Football League update, talk draft, Pro Bowl, and a whole lot more There’s a ton to cover and we dive right in.
Detroit Lions Podcast Breaks It Down
This week we begin by reviewing the Lions loss to the Buffalo Bills. There’s the Matt Prater topic to cover, how the defense is performing (kudos to Snacks, A’Shawn Robinson, Romeo Okwara, Jarrad Davis, Darius Slay, and Devon Kennard) We discuss the life and times of Jim Bob Cooter and where talent that used to play for him on the Lions has landed and how they are performing today. It leads to an interesting discussion about the team and player development.
Then we celebrate the top teams in the Detroit Lions Podcast Fantasy Football League. There are four leagues, in which four teams are vying for the top three positions. It just so happens that one of Chris’s team is one of them – in the Champions League. His story of just how he landed on his players and how his team has performed just might shock you… A total knucklehead.
From there we move on to the 2019 NFL Draft. Jeff Risdon weighs in on where he thinks the Detroit Lions will be drafting and makes his pick for the Lions in the first round. Its early days and there is still a bunch of data to mine on this, but as of today Jeff has his #1 identified. We discuss some of the research opportunities that happen between now and the draft such as the Shrine Game, Senior Bowl, Combine, and a whole lot more. Chris will be attending all of these with Jeff to ensure we have the best coverage and analysis on the Detroit Lions draft for your consumption. We’re going all in on the draft this year.
A Lot More To Discuss
There’s so much more. We talk about who made the Pro Bowl from the Lions and who was snubbed. Chris comes up with an alternative to that crappy game that might make football exciting that weekend while still recognizing NFL players appropriately. We also cover Titus Young’s release from prison, look ahead to the game against the Minnesota Vikings, and Chris and Jeff Risdon tag team the ‘Around The Division’ segment.
Lastly, hand around until the very end of the show for some hilarious audio from Kelly Stafford. Great stuff.

Ep: 190 – Lions Look To The Buffalo Bills – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at the Detroit Lions win over the Arizona Cardinals, likely Ziggy Ansah’s last game for the Lions, the view on tanking for a draft pick, this season’s unsung heroes, a perspective on the season so far, a look ahead to the Bills, and Case takes us around the division. This episode is buff and moves like Zach Zenner. Try to keep up.
Detroit Lions Podcast Enjoys A Win
This week we begin by reviewing the Lions big win over the Arizona Cardinals. It wasn’t a fun game to watch. It was a defensive contest that the Lions were able to take away from the Cards on the road. The injured and beleaguered offense continued to underperform, but despite a number of injuries (including to Da’Shawn Hand and Ezekiel Ansah) the Lions prevailed. We discuss what Ziggy’s injury means and why this was likely his last game for the Lions. Tough way to go out.
The we talk about tanking and why it’s not a good idea, unless you want to lose a locker room. We understand where people’s hearts are, but you can’t neuter these cats, they are going to play until the final whistle. Unless you listen to the Freep. Then you think Coach Patricia lost them in July.
Thanks to a great post from /u/Waxxo we talk about some of the team’s unsung heroes of the 2018 season. It isn’t over, and there isn’t a postmortem to be written, but a few guys deserve recognition for their great work. We review their accomplishments and add a few of the Detroit Lions Podcast favorite players to the list.
Changes Have Been Happening In The Secondary
Shhh, don’t say anything, but the Lions secondary has been evolving. Tracy Walker has been increasing his snap count as Glover Quin’s drop. We noticed Glover showing some signs of age on the field early in the season, and look at that… The team has quietly been making changes and getting the heir apparent up to speed. They’ve been doing it to good effect as well.
Moving ahead, we take a look at the slow start to the season, and the ways in which the team has improved throughout the year. There’s another team who has been doing things in a similar fashion for a while. While many people (including us at time) had their toasters ready, maybe we can unplug them in the short term…
Lastly, Case takes us for a Detroit Lions Podcast favorite – a quick run ‘Around the Division’ where we discuss the Green Bay Packers coaching changes and how they might actually hurt the team. We move to the Minnesota Vikings, their injury situation, and the firing their OC. Then of course there’s the Chicago Bears and their love of sausages. We’ll chat about them as well.

Ep: 189 – Quick Takes: Talkin’ ‘Bout My Division – The Detroit Lions Podcast
This week on the Detroit Lions Podcast: Quick Takes, Chris and Jeff slide back into Barry White mode and take another look at possible replacement Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase. We also make the cast to trim Cooter early, and talk about the Lions playoff chances as well as where we want them to land in the division. No real college action this weekend, so we take a week off from the draft talk.
After that smooth jazz inspired intro we get right into it with a discussion about the case to trim Cooter prior to the end of the season. What does it mean, and what could it hurt? We also discuss how it’s worked for Cleveland.
Detroit Lions Podcast Moves A Coordinator Up The List
After last week’s discussion about Offensive Coordinators, Jeff Risdon has made some changes to his evaluation of Adam Gase. He makes the case for why Gas should be moving up the charts of possible replacements for Jim Bob Cooter. There are some good takes in here that you don’t want to miss.
Then we look ahead to the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals game. This is one that the Lions should walk away with pretty easily, if Matthew Stafford can play. Look for heads to roll if they don’t and Jim Bob Cooter is likely at the top of the list of those in jeopardy.
After that we take a broader look at the division and the Lions playoff chances. When you look at the remaining schedules, it’s still a real possibility that they make it, but they definitely have to play their best football against Minnesota. We also discuss whether we want the Lions to finish ahead of the pack in the division or not…
Chris and The Riz, together again on the Detroit Lions Podcast… It’s a weekly thing now…

Ep: 188 – Lions Look To The Arizona Cardinals – The Detroit Lions Podcast
In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case take a look at the Lions loss to the Los Angeles Rams, talk about what’s to be gained from giving Jim Bob Cooter his walking papers, and discuss Golden Tate, Kenny Golladay, and Zach Zenner. We also take a look ahead to the Arizona Cardinals.
This week we begin by taking a call for a favorite segment, “Puttin’ ’em on Blast”, and get a good critique of Jim Bob Cooter and his ability. It sparks a great conversation about what we could gain/lose from making a move at offensive coordinator at this point in the season. Chris is finally convinced that he’s ready to move on from Jim Bob at this point and talks about how we might even get better while also assessing a potential candidate to replace Cooter.
Detroit Lions Podcast Game Review
From there we take a look back at the game against the Los Angeles Rams. There were some high points, and some really great things to take away from that game, but it was also another opportunity squandered. Once again our Lions were able to create hope where we had none and dashed those hopes before we could realize greatness. For many, the Lions showed how to beat the Rams offense from the defensive side of the ball, but one of the keys to that is to have an offense. We missed on that one.
From there we discuss the Golden Tate trade with new perspective. Could it be the lack of remaining home games and the team’s lack of belief in JBC that led to the trade? Picking up a good draft spot while knowing the effect on the team from the fans’ perspective would be small? A fresh conspiracy to chew on at this point in the Lions season. We also discuss the effect of Tate’s departure and Marvin Jones injury on the production of Kenny Golladay. The effect is real and at the same time, some good experience being built at the same time. Lastly, we discuss the misuse of Zach Zenner in the Lions offense. The standard, “he’s doing well, better stop using him” problem from JBC.
Detroit Lions Wildcard Chances
We take a look at what it would take for the Lions to seal the deal for a Wildcard playoff position. Its not impossible, yet there is still work to be done. The biggest game is the next one, but in the scheme of things the Vikings at home could be the pivot point for their opportunity to make the dance.
Moving ahead, we take a look at the upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals and discuss where the team’s opportunities might lie.
Lastly, Case takes us for a quick run ‘Around the Division’ where we discuss the Green Bay Packers and their coaching changes, the Minnesota Vikings and their future financial issues, and The Chicago Bears and their love of sausages.
