The Lions second round pick stunned many people, and was considered a reach by many others. There are some reports that Jahlani Tavai was at the top of the board for a pair of other teams and the Lions felt it was time to move on him. Worry not, we’ll help you understand how to feel about this pick. Round 3 was an absolute head-scratcher for all but a very few folks. We take a look at this pick and discuss why it may be a defining pick for the Bob Quinn regime. Draft Wrap And A Fifth Round Gem We’ll go through the rest of the picks in this episode of the Detroit Lions Podcast and a couple of Undrafted Free Agents to help put the cherry on top. A real highlight of a pick happened in the 5th round when the Lions picked up cornerback Amani Oruwariye at #146 overall. This one garnered a lot of discussion and for us it was no different. Lastly, we aren’t real big on draft grades. With that in mind, we compare the offseason work of the Lions against their division rivals. In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Case bring you the last stop before the draft. We are joined by Tony Ortiz and Jeff Risdon to break down where the Detroit Lions might be looking in the draft.  Two different opinions, and two good draft models play out before you. Tony Ortiz Is The Hero We Need At that point, the boys are sick of each other, so they bring super hero Tony Ortiz to make his last stand and put his stake into the ground for the draft. Tony is amazing as usual and makes some very good cases for his draft choices. He earns some walk off music as a result. Tony will always be in our hearts. Ever heard of that Riz guy? Yeah, he darkens our doorway once again with his last stand. In this episode of The Detroit Lions Podcast, @DeanBlandino joins Chris while Case gets away for a week. We also bring The Riz, Jeff Risdon on board to talk about breaking Lions news. Dean is a natural fit for our first topic, the changes to the NFL rules that came from last week’s League/Owners’ Meeting. He brings the right level of insight to what we can expect and what to worry about as a result of the changes – we also put it in context of the Lions and what it means for us directly. Dean also shares with us how the NFL will communicate their initial interpretation of the new rules as well as how things will evolve over the season.  Great insight to a yearly occurrence that will have bigger impact in the 2019 season. Next up is a conversation about Hard Knocks, a little about the selection process and how the Lions can stay away.  Dean also talks to the Detroit Lions Podcast about what it means to the team from various angles. We get some great insight around Bob Quinn at this part of the show as well… It’s that time of year, time to get ready for our 3rd annual NFL Draft Party! We bring you the key clips from the interview and react/respond with our take on the insights that Coach Patricia provides. There is a ton to unpack, and we may carry our conversation into next week on this as we think more about it. Of course we discuss our drive to 10K for St. Jude. We also spend some time talking about the release of Glover Quinn. He’s a player that the team, fans, and the city as a whole will miss. A high quality player, and high character guy. Unfortunately, its one of the realities to contend with. Age takes a little away from us every year and unfortunately, one of our all-time favs in Glover is the latest victim. Justin Rogers Joins The Detroit Lions Podcast We spend over 3/4 of the next hour talking with Detroit Lions beat writer, Justin Rogers. In this in-depth look at free agency, we have a lot of fun (mostly at Case’s expense) talking about how the Lions might fill their biggest needs. We take a look at Trey Flowers, Darqueze Dennard, Morris Claiborne, and a whole lot more. To be fair the Detroit Lions Podcast takes Justin into the draft a little bit before he promises to come back and discuss that on a show in the near future. We also talk trades, coaching moves, differences he’s seeing in the coaching staff, and what has happened in the press room as its changed from the “Dungeon of Doom” in Caldwell’s era to where it is today. What’s the risk of a tight End at 8th overall, and are there any reasons it could make sense? We then talk about the “safe” or likely pick for the Detroit Lions in the first round. After that, Chris talks about another interesting candidate that may be more of a high risk/high reward type of grab. Season Ticket Member Summit Next we discuss the Season ticket Member Summit on the Detroit Lions Podcast. We start by discussing Bob Quinn saying he’s willing to take a Quarterback in the draft. It was something that drew a lot of discussion and fire from dissenters. Definitely worth discussing. Also, Tim Twentyman had a great article on DetroitLions.com in which he shares 10 takeaways from Darrell Bevell, Paul Pasqualoni, and John Bonamego. It’s a great article that lends itself to some discussion and we share our reactions to his points. As a result of one of the points made, Chris decides that Da’Shawn Hand, Damon “Snacks” Harrison, and A’Shawn Robinson need to be named DaDA – because they can stand across any offensive line and ask, “Who’s your DaDA?” From there we take on a number of shorter, “Quick Hit”, types of topics. Next we start breaking down some draft scenarios and prospects and how things may have changed with the hiring of Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell. There’s a new sheriff in town, and that means a new approach. Bevell shared some great thinking during the hiring process. The Detroit Lions Podcast can’t wait to see what he does with the talent on this team. From here, Chris does his report on what he saw and experienced at the Senior Bowl this year. Chris brings you to the “Elephant Walk” and talks about who he sat with, and his approach to evaluation this year. He also breaks down his top players to watch based upon their performances at practice last week. There’s a lot of good info here on a number of players – some of who just might wind up on the Lions roster. Dean Blandino Joins Us Again Dean Blandino joins the Detroit Lions Podcast to discuss the controversial non-call in the LA Rams and New Orleans Saints game. He breaks down the play itself, the role of the officials, and what happened on the field. He also takes time to discuss what will happen within the ranks of the officials and how things may and may not change going forward. After that we break away from talking about officiating and discuss the Super Bowl LII match up. Dean predicts a winner you never expected. Lastly, with the breaking news about the hiring of Sean Ryan as QB Coach for Matthew Stafford, Chris and Case call up the sickened corpse of Jeff Risdon and get him to weigh in on the hire.
