Episode 17 – The Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) with Aurelijus Morkevicius

Broadcast date: October 15, 19:00 CET – Language: English In this episode, we talk to Aurelijus from Dassault about the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF). UAF is a framework for modeling enterprise architectures. In the past, architecture frameworks were mainly used in the military context, such as the Department of Defence Architecture Framework (DoDAF), Nato Architecture Framework (NAF), or Ministry of Defence Architecture Framework (MoDAF). The UAF is a specification of the OMG. In the non-military domain, there is an increasing need for system-of-systems modeling, especially due to increasing global collaboration and IoT technologies. Aurelijus is co-chairman and one of the leading architects for the current OMG UAF specification development group. So he is the perfect guest to chat about UAF. We don’t have enough time to go through all the methods of SYSMOD. We give a rough overview and talk about the history of SYSMOD, how the methodology is used and what the future of SYSMOD looks like. We will also consider the variant modeling approach VAMOS (Variant Modeling with SysML), and the FAS method (Functional Architectures for Systems). Episode 12 – MBSE Tools: Lemontree [EN]

Broadcast date: June 9, 19:00 CET – Language: English In addition to methodology and modeling languages, tools also play an important role in MBSE. For many users, they are the face of MBSE, as they finally bring it to life in the tools. In this episode, we will take a look at the LemonTree tool from LieberLieber. Our guest is Daniel Siegl, who is responsible for business development at LieberLieber. LemonTree is a model versioning tool for distributed teams. It supports different modeling languages like SysML, UML, and BPMN. We’ll take a look at LemonTree together and talk about what problems it solves, how it can be used, and what concepts it implements. You can join us live, at the Youtube livestream on June 9, 2021 at 7pm CET or later on Youtube, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music or Google Podcasts. Episode 10 – Ontologies & DOL with guest Dr. Fabian Neuhaus [EN]

Broadcast date: April 30, 19:00 CET – Language: English In this episode, we look at ontologies in general and the OMG DOL specification in particular. DOL stands for Distributed Ontology, Model, and Specification Language. In recent years, the topic of “ontology” has become increasingly important in systems engineering. A good reason to take a closer look at this topic. Many people talk about ontologies, but do they always mean the same thing. What actually is an ontology? We could win Dr. Fabian Neuhaus as our guest for this topic. Fabian is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Knowledge and Language Engineering at the University of Magdeburg, Germany.  He is also a co-lead of the OMG Ontology Integration and Interoperability (OntoIOp) standardization activity which developed the DOL specification. You can join us live, at the Youtube livestream on April 30, 2021 at 7pm CET or later on Youtube, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music or Google Podcasts. Episode 9 – MBSE around the World: China with Xiang Lee [EN]

Broadcast date: April 7, 16:00 CET – Language: English We want to learn how MBSE is used in the world and this time we visit China. Our guest is Xiang Lee from the company SysGraph. We talk about how MBSE is used in China, what is the state of education, what organizations are there for MBSE, where are the challenges and some more. Xiang Lee knows it well, because his company SysGraph is the vendor of a SysML modeling tool. Previously, he worked in the automotive and aerospace industries, among others. Since China is very large, Xiang Lee can of course only give us an excerpt. Tim met Xiang Lee 2 years ago at the MESCONF in Shanghai and got a first insight into MBSE in China during the discussions with the participants. Of course, we also take the opportunity to learn about his SysML modeling tool. This part of the podcast will certainly only be good to follow with video. You can join us live, at the Youtube livestream on April 7, 2021 at 4pm CET or later on Youtube, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music or Google Podcasts. Episode 8 – What do formal modeling languages have to do with Winnie Pooh with guest Dr. Sylvia Melzer [DE]

Broadcast date: March 8, 2021, 7 p.m. – Language: German This time we take a look behind the scenes of modeling languages and deal with the formalism. For this, we talk to Dr. Sylvia Melzer. She is a research associate at Universität zu Lübeck/Universität Hamburg. Current technology trends such as Digital Twin, Digital Thread, or the use of artificial intelligence in systems engineering require more formal models. They must be syntactically and semantically formally precise in order to be able to be administered by machines. While in SysML v1 many were already required by the underlying metamodel, in the current draft of the SysML v2 – specification one now finds passages like the following: Values of redefiningFeatures are the same as the values of their redefinedFeatures restricted to the domain the redefiningFeature.∀fg, fs ∈ VF fg ∈ fs.redefinedFeature ⇒ (∀s1 ∈ S (∀fts ∈ VT fts ∈ fs.featuringType ⇒ s1 ∈ (fts)minT) ⇒ (∀s2 ∈ S (featurePair(s1, s2, fs) ≡ featurePair(s1, s2, fg)))) SysML v2 Submission, Kernel Modeling Language (KerML) It becomes more formal! What role do languages such as the Distributed Ontology, Model, and Specification Language (DOL), the Attributive Concept Language with Complements (ALC), SROIQ, or the Web Ontology Language (OWL) play in this context? And what does Winnie the Pooh have to do with it? And what turns marzipan lovers into marzipan despisers? You can join us live at the Youtube livestream on March 8, 2021 at 7 p.m. or later on Youtube, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, or Google Podcasts.
