Join us as we talk about all things blood sugar: why it's important, how it affects the skin, and how to balance it. Has your skin condition improved after balancing blood sugar? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: Why should you care if your blood sugar is not well balanced? More effective ways than the fasting glucose marker to tell whether your blood sugar is imbalanced What if a fasting blood sugar level is all you have? Can stress impact your blood sugar? Symptoms of possible blood sugar imbalance Why is what we eat important? Quotes "Blood sugar regulation is important because every cell in the body needs to get a source of energy, a source of fuel, in order to do its thing. So in order for skin cells to be able to reproduce properly and get the right nutrition in, there needs to be a balance in blood sugar and the escort hormone (called insulin)." [3:06] "When insulin resistance starts, we get a lack of nourishment to all of our cells. Skin included." [5:00] "The mechanism is: when we perceive stress, our blood sugar goes up, our cortisol goes up. Because that's what the adrenals do. They produce cortisol. And one of cortisol's jobs is to raise the blood sugar and the blood pressure and the heart rate and the respiration rate." 051: How To Decide What’s Best For Your Skin Rashes
It’s not uncommon to feel really overwhelmed with what you should do with skin rashes that make you crazy. Most people have tried lots of creams available at the store as well as the things recommended by their doctor hoping to get relief. But at a certain point, you may find yourself questioning if there’s something more than the conventional route. Thoughts may begin to creep in as you start to wonder if something under the surface is to blame for your skin. The decisions that you make about how to address your skin are based on something that I call Health Values. Knowing what yours are is important so that you don’t get pushed into treatments that ultimately aren’t a good fit for you (and can end up wasting a lot of time and money). I’m breaking this all down in today’s episode! In this episode: What mindset do you have about your health and how much do you want to be involved? Why the “fastest route” to clear skin can have consequences Beware of desperation — Make your decisions with all of the cards on the table Want to go an alternative route? Be willing to do the work Why you don’t need to know everything to see results Quotes: It’s equally okay to want as well as NOT want pills and creams to deal with your skin problems. The difference in which way you choose to go comes down to your values. Each route requires compromise — and neither is a perfectly straight line to clear skin. Especially since everything we do (both natural and conventional) has consequences. There is so much more to your health than what you write on the intake form. We’ve been conditioned to blow off and ignore things, so it’s time to undo that bad habit since tuning into your symptoms is critical. So you’ve got to be present to the process so that you can tell me things that you had no idea would be important OR have forgotten without any additional prompting.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

049: Why Are My Skin Rashes Making Me So Tired?
Living with skin rashes is exhausting. And it’s even worse if you struggle to sleep well through the night because of awful scratching (that wakes you up)! Before you assume that you’ve got something called adrenal fatigue, take a listen to today’s podcast where I explain why it’s likely NOT your adrenals. When you take a look at your fatigue puzzle from a different perspective, it forces you to address how energy is made in your body. When it’s not produced efficiently, you end up with lots of symptoms (that mirror adrenal fatigue) AND skin problems. Poor energy status is absolutely a root cause that must be ruled out! In this episode: Hidden root causes reason you are so tired (and have skin rashes) Why your adrenals don’t actually make energy Nutrients necessary to make energy (also known as ATP) Symptoms to help you figure out if it is your mitochondria How to test to see if you need to support your body’s energy generation Quotes: “There’s a much deeper reason that often drives fatigue than not sleeping well or the stress from scratching and unwanted glares. It underlies issues that you may or may not have with your adrenals. It has to do with the most basic biochemical way your body makes energy in the first place.” “Everyone thinks that they have adrenal fatigue (more appropriately called HPA Axis dysregulation). But this is an over “diagnosed” issue and does more disservice than good because the adrenals don’t make energy. Your mitochondria do. If you don’t pay attention to them, there’s no amount of adrenal support that will give you back your energy.”Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

048: Connecting The Dots Between Seborrheic Dermatitis And Candida w/ Dr. Alan Dattner
Seborrheic Dermatitis is an embarrassing, frustrating, persistent skin condition. My guest today is here to shed some light on seborrhea and how yeast plays a large role in the condition. My guest today is actually a returning guest, Dr. Alan Dattner. He is a board-certified dermatologist practicing holistic and integrative dermatology for nearly 40 years, helping patients who have failed conventional care. He uses nutrition, herbal medicine, supplements, functional medicine, applied kinesiology, psychosomatics and more to heal the underlying causes of skin disorders. Dr. Dattner has a background in immunology, having worked in six different immunology laboratories with renowned scientists, culminating in studies of cross-reactive immune recognition as a visiting scientist at the National Institutes of Health, and that is pretty cool. The research led him to understand the scientific validity of digestive issues as a cause of inflammation in the skin. Join us as we talk about the relationship between seborrheic dermatitis and candida. Has your seborrheic dermatitis improved with treatment for candida albicans? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: What is seborrheic dermatitis? Why aren't current treatments helping people see massive improvement? How is yeast involved in seborrheic dermatitis? How to control seborrheic dermatitis Can addressing yeast help with seborrheic dermatitis? Quotes "Seborrheic dermatitis is the condition that underlies the common condition we know as dandruff. But seborrheic dermatitis can be more extensive than just scaling in the scalp." [1:34] "Candida Albicans is a frequent inhabitant of our digestive tract. And if you look at the immunology literature, you'll find that although it's phylogenetically very different from Pityrosporum (now known as Malassezia), it is immunologically cross-reactive." [8:49] "In our culture, we have been growing more and more Candida in our guts because the sugar consumption has gone up." 047: Will A Liver Detox Help My Skin Rashes?
I loathe the phrase “liver detox” because it’s so misunderstood by most people. If you’re liver is struggling, it doesn’t need to be detoxed! Got eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dandruff and other skin issues? Your liver MUST be on your radar, but not the way the internet gurus talk about it. In this episode, I’m going to share with you how your liver actually detoxes on its own and what you need to do to support it. That way you can avoid those horrible “die off” symptoms that are so common when doing different detoxes you can do on your own. I’ve worked with too many clients who have terrible flares as a result of not keeping an eye on supporting their liver, and ended up with even worse rashes than before they started. In this episode: Stop listening to people who say your liver is like a filter or a sponge What “die off” symptoms actually mean Why detoxing your liver is unnecessary (and what to do instead) What liver support I recommend from clinical experience How to easily understand what your liver actually does Quotes: Anyone telling you that you just need to detox your liver doesn’t truly understand how your liver works, why it plays a role in helping rebuild healthy skin, and what it really needs in order to operate optimally. They claim that your liver acts like a sponge. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your liver isn’t a sponge. It’s not like a fish filter either. (0:25) When Phase 1 detox is pushed too hard OR if Phase 2 doesn’t have enough ingredients (like glycine, glutathione, and magnesium) to move things through, a backup of toxic material will occur. When this happens, you can experience “die off” (also known as the Herxheimer Reaction), symptoms like rashes and even an exacerbation of symptoms. 046: How Light Therapy Can Be Useful To Stop Skin Rashes w/ Dr. Jared Jagdeo
Many of us with chronic skin rashes are unable to find relief with conventional treatment and steroid creams. UV Light Therapy might be a welcome alternative, potentially able to reduce the immuno-inflammatory response in the skin. My guest today, Dr. Jared Jagdeo, is a board certified dermatologist in New York City who specializes in helping patients achieve their best skin. Dr. Jagdeo focuses on skin health and wellness, using a combination of procedures, lasers and topical agents to help patients achieve their skin wellness goals. He is also an expert on sensitive skin care concerns and male aesthetics. Dr. Jagdeo is a physician-scientist who sees patients and conducts skin-related laboratory and clinical trials research. He is the founding director of the Laser, Aesthetics and Body Institute at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY and the founding director of the Center for Photomedicine, also at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Join us as we talk about how UV light therapy may be helpful for those with chronic skin rashes. Have you ever tried UV light therapy for your skin condition? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: What is UV light therapy and why might it be useful for people with chronic skin rashes? Should you go out in the sun more? Does UV light therapy affect the skin microbiome? What is red light therapy? What's the difference between going to a tanning bed at a salon and getting UV light treatment at a dermatologist's office? Can this therapy be used for scarring? Is there a risk of skin cancer with UV light therapy? Quotes "By using UV light, you're able to actually reduce the number of inflammatory cells that are in the skin that caused these conditions [e.g. eczema, psoriasis, and vitiligo] and result in better younger, healthier skin." [3:05] "One of the things we've found is that that you can actually change skin cell function and also different skin conditions by using visible and infrared light to enhance skin health and wellness. And also limit some of the harmful known side effects that are associated with ultraviolet radiation. So choosing the specific wavelength of light may have a tremendous amount of benefit and tremendous potential for skin health and wellness. " [5:49] "Tanning beds that are in tanning salons are very, very different and distinct and harmful compared to the phototherapy units that are in a physician's office, such as a board-certified dermatologist office or an academic medical center." 045: Have Your Skin Rashes Made You Cynical & Distrustful?
When you feel like you’ve tried EVERYTHING to stop skin rashes, it can be so frustrating that you want to throw in the towel. The idea of having hope that you can somehow solve this puzzle get dim. And before you know it, you don’t want to hear anything that could possibly help your eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dandruff, etc. I hope you enjoy this episode. It’s different than the rest, but something I wanted to address because there can be dark places that skin rashes can take you emotionally. My hope is that you’ll begin to let the light crack on in through the armor you wear to protect yourself from any more disappointments. I know how hard this can be, so please… give this episode a listen and then share your throughts below! In this episode: Feeling like you’ve done everything right, but you haven’t seen results Emotional and mental burnout that leads to you losing hope Jennifer’s “dark place” after so many failed attempts Toxic vulnerability triggered by skin rashes How to begin stepping out of the negative mindset that only sees failure ahead QUOTES: Suffering from my eczema was a dark place to be - walking through life with what has become a really big chip on my shoulder about pretty much anything that had to do with my skin. I THOUGHT that this intense skepticism, weariness, and bitterness was a way to control what I was exposed to and what I’d let in. But it truly wasn’t. I spent so much time “protecting myself” from anything that offered a shred of hope, that I couldn’t feel hope anymore. I started building this wall between myself and anyone who made any sort of suggestions or recommendations. Thinking the whole time that “you don’t understand my suffering. I’m going to protect myself from any attempt at hope because I can’t take any more failure. I’m not going to be vulnerable anymore.” And when you take a 2000ft view, skin rashes make us both physically as well as emotionally vulnerable. FULL TRANSCRIPT Welcome back to episode #45 of the Healthy Skin Show! In today's episode, I’m talking about what I call “Health Quest Burnout”. Here’s what I mean… You’ve gone to doctor after doctor trying to get help with your skin and other symptoms and conditions. You’ve spent countless hours online searching Dr. Google and jumping in and out of rabbit holes desperately seeking missing clues. You’ve tried creams, salves, supplements, medications, lifestyle changes, and all sorts of homemade remedies… Hoping that *something* will work. It’s not uncommon that after a certain point, you can feel like the skin rashes start to break you. They take over and wreck your carefully made plans (or even the most mundane experiences like showering). Bit by bit, they chip away until you don’t recognize your life (or your skin) anymore. You lose control over your life as so much of your time and energy goes into dealing with your skin. And you can get to a point where you think, “I’ve tried everything. I’m doomed.” It’s a dark place… and I know because I was there once. 043: Candida and Skin Rashes: A Hidden Root Cause (Introduction)
Do you have candida skin rashes? Or rashes that you believe are triggered and flared by candida? It’s certainly possible! Candida is one of the big gut factors that can shift the balance of your gut (and ultimately your skin) towards dysbiosis. If you recall in previous episodes of the podcast, we’ve discussed how your gut microbiome balance essentially can set the tone for your skin’s bug community. Whether you suspect you’ve got candida or know for sure that you do, today’s episode is the first of a series exploring Candida as a skin rash root cause. It can impact pretty much any skin condition including eczema (atopic dermatitis), psoriasis, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, lichen sclerosus, tinea versicolor and more! In this episode: Why you might be wrong about having candida even though you have a lot of symptoms Why dandruff is not a scalp problem — it’s a gut problem Diet suggestions to make if you have candida How to manage your expectations on your healing journey QUOTES: “The best test for candida is a urine test that looks for the organic acid D-Arabinitol. The spit test you’ve probably seen online is way too subjective and has no science behind it.” “I hear from a lot of clients and readers who have been traumatized trying candida cleanses on their own. They found a DIY kit online that only ended up making their skin rashes worse! Nothing makes an improvement after the flare-up of their symptoms. They feel such a sense of defeat because they blame themselves for making everything worse.” FULL TRANSCRIPT Welcome back to the Healthy Skin Show! In today's episode, I’m talking all about Candida! This is a hot topic because so many people think that candida is one of their root causes just from reading a list of symptoms online. And I totally get it because those lists include a number of symptoms that a lot of people have who have chronic health issues. Before you jump to the conclusion that Candida IS an issue for you (or if you already believe it is), know this… You can have the majority of the symptoms on those lists and NOT have Candida. You can have Candida, but never had a vaginal yeast infection that you can recall. Or you could be one of those people who end up with a mixed bag of bacteria AND Candida (or even parasites) causing the problem. And in this case, just targeting Candida might not improve your symptoms (or will do so only marginally) because it was only one piece of the puzzle. Fast Facts About Candida Overgrowth (To Frame Our Conversation) Here are 8 fast facts that you should know about candida — Candida overgrowth does not respond best to diet alone. The best test for candida is a urine test that looks for the organic acid D-Arabinitol. The spit test you’ve probably seen online is way too subjective and has no science behind it. Candida is a commensal gut organism so it does normally live in your gut. Keep in mind that it is an opportunistic “bug” so when conditions are right, it will overgrow (like when you take antibiotics). The issue with candida is that overgrowth begins in the gut. When we start to manifest outward signs of candida (like various fungal infections… even on your skin, feet or nails), it’s a clue of fungal gut dysbiosis meaning that to really stop the Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com
