143: Inverse Psoriasis + Candida Connection

Though it’s a less common form of psoriasis, Inverse Psoriasis (IP) impacts about 30% of those living with Plaque Psoriasis. One thing about having Inverse Psoriasis that really caught my attention was the connection to getting fungal infections at the site of IP rashes! I always ask clients regardless of what their main concern is if they have had issues with fungus or yeast in other areas of the body. And it’s not uncommon for me to find that fungal issues elsewhere tend to match up to having fungal overgrowth in the gut. I wanted to share my alternative perspective on Inverse Psoriasis so that if you’re struggling with it (or you know someone who is), you can use it as a clue! You don’t have to feel embarrassed or live in shame about it because knowing that IP is present could help you identify other issues driving your psoriasis under the surface. In this episode: What is inverse psoriasis? Candida + other bacteria that make IP worse Conventional ways IP is addressed Shocking candida stat that all Psoriasis warriors should know Alterative thoughts on IP + where to dig deeper Quotes: One study found that 56.6% of Inverse Psoriasis rashes had Corynebacterium minutissimum present making symptoms worse. A 2018 paper found that the “prevalence of Candida spp. colonization was significantly higher in patients with psoriasis compared with the control group.”Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

Join us as we talk about psoriasis: different types, how it's diagnosed, and how it affects other parts of the body. How do you manage your psoriasis? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: Overview of what psoriasis is from an integrative dermatologist Psoriasis + psoriatic arthritis -- What's the difference? Different forms of psoriasis Thoughts on scalp psoriasis How psoriasis impacts other organ systems (like your liver + joints) Can weight loss improve your psoriasis? Testing - What's important to monitor? Quotes “The most common form is known as plaque psoriasis and that's where you get what are known as big plaques, basically these big red scaly, in many cases, very thick plaques that develop on the body that tend to occur on the outside of the arms, along the elbows, the knees, but they can go anywhere, on the back, chest.” [4:09] “Scalp psoriasis is a challenge and if you only have scalp involvement, that's where it becomes a challenge to say that it's psoriasis because there are variants of seborrheic dermatitis that can be very severe that can also scale a lot. There's actually an in between diagnosis, Jennifer, called sebopsoriasis where it's very thick, it's way too thick to be a seborrheic dermatitis, but you don't see the psoriasis anywhere else on their body.” [8:11] Links Find Dr. Sivamani online Healthy Skin Show episode 076: What You Need To Know About Acne, Accutane & Antibiotics w/ Dr. Raja Sivamani Jennifer's appearance on the LearnSkin podcast: An Inside-Out Approach: The Role of Nutritionists and Nutrition in Healthy Skin Follow Dr. Sivamani on Facebook | Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

141: Dealing With H. pylori: Diet + Conventional vs. Alternative Options

Is there an H. pylori diet that can help? Is H. pylori contagious? What supplements are helpful to get rid of H. pylori? These are just some of the questions I’ve received over the past two weeks after the release of the H. pylori and Skin Rashes episode on the Healthy Skin Show. Because of the overwhelming response, I felt it was only right to do a Part 2 so that you could get answers to your questions! It’s my hope that this will give you a better sense of what to consider IF you do have H. pylori as one of your hidden root causes. And that’s an important point… often H. pylori doesn’t show up on its own! So don’t make the mistake of putting on blinders and thinking that it’s all you have to deal with. Look at your own complete picture as unique and dig into what’s driving your issues so that you can rebuild healthier skin. In this episode: Is the H. pylori diet effective? What foods can help you with H. pylori? Conventional approach to H. pylori Alternative options for giving H. pylori the boot Supplements to consider for H. pylori Is H. pylori contagious? (short answer: YES) Quotes: Depending on the severity of your symptoms, H. pylori can do serious damage to your GI tract (like bleeding ulcers). Despite what you have read online, no diet exists to help you get rid of H. pylori. It’s not a food-fixable problem.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

Some instances when you may want to add prebiotics into your diet, and some when you might not want to Some prebiotic foods How to understand prebiotic supplement labels SIBO and prebiotics Gut Power Drinks Quotes “A prebiotic is essentially, really the easiest way to think about it is like food for your probiotics, food for good bacteria that's hanging out in your gut.” [2:58] “Apples, for example, would be something that's got some prebiotics in there. But things like chicory root, blueberries, blackberries, garlic, leeks, onions, all of those kinds of foods have prebiotics in them.” [10:14] Links Find Kelsey online Gut Power Drinks Healthy Skin Show episode 002: Wait, What Does My Gut Have To Do With My Chronic Skin Condition?! w/ Kelsey Kinney Follow Kelsey on Facebook | InstagramReady to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

139: Can A High Histamine Diet Flare Rosacea?

Did you ever notice that Rosacea trigger foods are also high histamine foods? Apparently, research is showing more and more a connection between histamine and rosacea flares! Though some people will find that following a rosacea diet can help lessen the redness in their skin, others will still get flares without explanation. The connection to histamine may finally answer one of the reasons why. And while it might make sense to try a low histamine diet if you’ve got rosacea, the issue at hand can be more complex than just food exposure. See, hiding under the histamine issue is something called Mast Cells which is really the bigger issue IF histamines are one of your root causes. In today’s episode, I’m going to share some new research coming out connecting rosacea with histamines and mast cells. Plus, I’m dishing on some hidden sources of histamine that are often overlooked (that have nothing to do with diet)! In this episode: New research connecting high histamine foods to Rosacea flare-ups What are Mast Cells + how are they connected? What triggers Mast Cells to release histamine? Specific gut bugs that produce histamine List of symptoms associated with histamine issues What are high histamine foods? 3 potential antihistamine natural supplements to support Mast Cells Quotes: What if rosacea flare-ups are a sign of something else going on in your body and NOT the ultimate problem? There’s more research coming out connecting the dots between mast cell destabilization with the various symptoms associated with rosacea.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

138: How Ayurveda Looks At Skin Rashes w/ Dr. Marc Halpern

A Doctor of Chiropractic and an Ayurvedic Doctor, he is the co-founder of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association, the National Council on Ayurvedic Education and the California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine. He has also recorded the #1 best-selling Meditation CD in the United States: Yoga Nidra and Self-Healing. Join us as we talk about the ayurvedic approach to skin conditions. Have you tried Ayurveda for your skin rashes? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: What is Ayurveda (and how does it differ from Western Medicine)? Skin issues and Ayurveda What are Doshas (and what can they tell you about your skin type)? How does itchiness (for example) relate to the Doshas? What oils work best for different skin types Herbs to aid skin health Quotes “In Ayurveda, we understand that each person with a skin condition actually has a different skin condition. Something different may have caused it and it may be manifesting a little bit differently, and therefore the treatment is also going to be unique.” [1:40] “If you don't digest your food well, Ayurveda teaches that a toxin forms in your digestive system. That toxin overflows from the digestive system. It's called ama. And then it's secreted onto the skin and causes skin disease.” [20:27] Links Find Dr. Halpern online Healing Your Life: Lessons on the Path of Ayurveda Yoga Nidra and Self Healing CD Follow Dr. Halpern on Facebook | FacebookReady to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

137: Before Starting Dupixent (Or Other Biologic Medications)...

If you’ve considered starting Dupixent or some other type of biologic medication for your rashes, here’s something to consider. Problems (that aren’t significant enough to be major issues yet) can be lurking under the surface and go unnoticed. If a biologic medication works, symptoms should go away. That’s a great thing for your confidence, peace of mind, and daily level of comfort. But it can cause you to miss clues (aka. symptoms) that need attention sooner rather than later. In today’s episode, I’m sharing why symptoms are like your car’s “check engine” light AND how this all played out for a client in real life. My client wanted to share her experience to inspire you to “take a look under the hood” to make sure there’s nothing else going on that does need some TLC. Because once you start a biologic (and it works), you lose out on using your symptoms as a guide towards better health. In this episode: Isn’t it a good thing to block inflammation that’s wrecking your skin? Symptoms are like your car’s “check engine” light Jessica’s experience living with eczema (and why she was recommended a biologic) Digging into Jessica’s case revealed deeper issues Why you should get your system checked thoroughly before turning to a biologic Words of wisdom from my client Jessica Quotes: If Jessica had taken a biologic (assuming it cleared up her skin), she would have never known about any of the other issues hiding under the surface. Symptoms aren’t meant to mentally and emotionally devastate you, nor make you feel like you’re at war with your body.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

136: Alternative Solutions For Rosacea w/ Dr. Peter Lio

Rosacea is a skin condition best known for causing redness and flushing. But is can also lead to pustules and comedones. My guest today will share more about rosacea, as well as possible treatment options. My guest today is Dr. Peter Lio, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology & Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his internship in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, and his Dermatology training at Harvard where he served as Chief Resident in Dermatology. While at Harvard, he received formal training in acupuncture. Dr. Lio has written a textbook on Integrative Dermatology and has published over 100 papers. Join us as we talk about rosacea: what it is, how it is diagnosed, possible triggers, and treatment options. Do you successfully manage your rosacea? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: What is rosacea? How people are diagnosed Nicotinamide Other treatments for rosacea What is Demodex? Wild chrysanthemum Quotes “We also have to make sure we're removing the triggers because another thing that rosacea and acne are really kind of different is that with acne, yes, there are certain triggers that can bring it out, no doubt about it. But rosacea happens on a much faster timescale.” [2:56] “So our first line treatments would be things like topical metronidazole. It's technically an antibiotic, but we're pretty convinced in this context it's more for its antiinflammatory effect. It's very safe and gentle. It's even pregnancy safe.” [11:10] Links Find Dr. Lio Online Healthy Skin Show ep. 001: How to Protect & Strengthen Your Skin Barrier w/ Dr. Peter Lio Healthy Skin Show ep. 037: Nickel Allergy And Eczema w/ Dr. Peter Lio Healthy Skin Show ep. 104: Topical B12 For Skin Rashes w/ Dr. Peter Lio Follow Dr. Lio on Twitter | FacebookReady to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com

135: H. pylori-Skin Rash Connection

If you’ve followed along for a while now, you know that hidden bugs can be one of the root causes driving your skin rashes. H. pylori is one of those bugs that is often overlooked! Yes, there is an H. pylori-Skin Rash connection. Though most of the symptoms associated with H. pylori are gut-related, it’s entirely possible to have no GI symptoms and test positive for this bug. Plus, I’ve found that there are other health complaints beyond GI symptoms that could be clues to hidden H. pylori. In today’s episode, I want to share with you my own clinical experience and the research I’ve found connecting H. pylori and several skin rash conditions like eczema, hives, and psoriasis. In this episode: Client rashes triggered by hidden H. pylori infections What is H. pylori? What are the symptoms of H. pylori? H. pylori Rash Connections Why H. pylori can trigger rashes Testing options for H. pylori Quotes: One study found the incidence of H. pylori to be 72% positive in psoriasis participants. Unwanted bugs in the GI tract don’t always create GI symptoms, and that statement definitely applies to H. pylori.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds + flare ups?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by 1000+ clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at skinrepaircall.com
