Recently, I made a poll asking: Would you rather have a million dollars today or the skills of a billionaire in five years? It's a loaded question, and to me, the answer is obvious…you have to go for the skills. Let me tell you why.Money is never the solution to all our problems. It can depreciate, be stolen, and even become devalued over time. On the other hand, having the skills, knowledge, resources, and ability to make money will never leave you wanting. However, I was surprised to find that 30% of my audience chose the million dollars. Many argued that it could improve the quality of their lives, help them acquire skills and invest for retirement. While these things may be true, in my experience, things that are given without having been earned tend to leave us easily.Think about the lottery. Reports suggest that 70% of people who win the lottery will go bankrupt within only a few short years. That's a massive majority of people. My question is…what makes you think you are the exception? If we don't yet have the skills or the ability to make a million dollars, chances are….we won't know how to use it properly if it's just handed to us.Now, I'm not saying that everyone who chooses the million dollars will lose it. I recently tweeted about video games and the responses I got were intense.So in my tweet, I mentioned porn, junk food, and video games, and I said that there's no such thing as cheap dopamine…you don't realize the true cost you're paying. And while most people can agree the other two aren't great, there are a lot of folks out there who are convinced that video games are harmless. But let me tell you, I've played my fair share of video games in my life. I grew up with the Internet and I was playing video games before they were cool. I'm talking original StarCraft and Diablo.But here's the thing…for me, video games became an addiction. I would spend 15 hours a day playing and it was ruining my life. So I had to cut video games out of my life completely to get away from that addiction. Now, I know not everyone has the same experience as me, and that's totally fine. Some people can play video games for 30 minutes a day and be totally productive in other areas of their lives. But even if you're only playing a little bit, there are hidden costs that you're paying for that cheap dopamine hit.Even if you think you're being totally productive and functional in other areas of your life, these costs are still impacting you more than you realize. And remember, I'm not saying you should never play video games again. I'm gonna drop some serious knowledge on you about this cool psychological principle called the Zygarnic Effect. So here's the deal: the Zygarnic Effect kicks in when you get interrupted in the middle of a task and can't finish it. It creates an open cognitive loop in your brain that's like having a gazillion tabs open on your computer browser.It sucks up your mental bandwidth, making it hard to remember stuff, retain information, and focus on what you need to do. Sound familiar?But here's the kicker: we can totally use this to our advantage with a little thing called intention. Most of us fall victim to it when we get interrupted by our boss, phone, or email and end up scrolling through social media instead of going back to what we were doing. It's like a vicious cycle, man.But I've got a trick for you….when I started writing sci-fi and fantasy novels, I used this strategy where I'd stop writing in the middle of a sentence, just like Hemingway did. It's crazy, I know, but it works like magic.
