Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Church - Heyday
The Church are a bit of an enigma in the rock world. Though best known for their breakout 1988 song Under The Milky Way off of Starfish. Prior to that they'd had an unexpected Australian anthem in An Unguarded Moment. But they didn't want to be a pop band - they saw themselves as members of the new psychedelic movement. So the cover of Heyday (released in Australia late 1985 but in the US January 28, 1986) you can see the lads sporting some paisley shirts against a Persian Rug. But at that point, they'd already abandoned their psychedelic leanings for their own AOR stylings.
The album Heyday, produced by Peter Walsh (Simple Minds) provides some entrancing guitar work with lyrics from Steve Kilbey that go from seeing behind the curtain of fame (Disenchanted) to unending sadness (Tristesse) to vain plastic surgery junkies (Youth Worshipper). Peter Koppes and Marty Wilson-Piper offer intricate and jangling guitars which make for 120 Minutes gold on MTV and can even put you into a bit of a trance. Myrrh and Tantalized proved to be all time favorites of Church fans and are still part of the band's setlist to this day.
However, though songs like Columbus and Already Yesterday may have been enjoyed by fans of the band, they failed to crack the charts the way the record company had hoped. Still, the band were able to tour the US with Echo & The Bunnymen which helped them break down some doors and win some fans. Though they were dropped by their record companies after Heyday, this led to them being picked up by Arista, which led to Starfish and success in the US and around the world.
It may not be multi-platinum but Heyday would help define the sound of The Church, allowed them to write songs together and create a foundation that built towards greater success.

Shout It Out Loudcast: "Double Platinum"
This week Tom & Zeus open Season 8 of Shout It Out Loudcast with a review of the most quintessential KISS compilation, the 1978 "Double Platinum!"
This SIOL's 12th compilation review. This was KISS' first compilation and came out in a period where KISS would release 7 albums in two years including 2 double albums, one of which is Double Platinum.
This compilation covers songs from 1974 - 1977, containing containing 20 songs from the first 6 KISS studio albums.
The album was certified platinum and was produced by the great Sean Delaney. He remixed the songs and made some controversial changes to many of the tracks, including a new disco version of "Strutter" called "Strutter '78" but lovingly called "Disco Strutter" on SIOL.
The album cover with its silver color KISS logos and red Double Platinum writing is legendary. When opened there were embossed images of the band members that were fascinating to view.
The guys breakdown the track selection and then rank the compilation album and cover versus the previous reviewed compilation albums.
A classic album from the classic era of KISS.
Thank you Loudcasters for season 8!

Metal mayhem ROC:DMC (Darryl McDaniels of Run-DMC)’s Metal Roots — Sabbath, Priest, and the Rock DNA Behind “She Gets Me High”
In this in-depth conversation, Darryl McDaniels sits
down with Metal Walt to explore the heavy metal and hard rock roots that have
been part of his musical identity since childhood.
Growing up in New York City, DMC discovered rock and metal
through radio, hearing bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest at a formative
age. He explains how those sounds were already embedded in early hip-hop
culture, from DJs digging through crates to the attitude and energy that shaped
Run-DMC from the very beginning.
The discussion revisits key moments such as “Rock Box” and
“Walk This Way,” why rock was always part of Run-DMC’s DNA, and how those
records opened creative doors that still matter today. DMC also talks about his
decision to actively create rock and metal music himself, leading to projects
like HellRaisers and his 2026 solo metal single “She Gets Me High.”
Additional topics include NYC hardcore roots, playing with
Agnostic Front, sharing stages with Sammy Hagar, opening for Lou Reed, and how
creativity, authenticity, and curiosity continue to guide his work.

VINYL RELICS | Billy Nicholls’ Would You Believe – A Beautiful and Bittersweet Psych-Pop Masterpiece
EPYSODE 67: "Would You Believe", by Billy Nicholls.
Guest: Billy Nicholls.
Additional commentary by Uncle Herff.
This week we present one of the most beautiful and bittersweet stories in 1960s British pop: Billy Nicholls’ legendary 1968 album Would You Believe. Hailed by critics, this shimmering psych-pop masterpiece was shelved before its proper release and went on to become one of the rarest and most sought-after records in the collector world.
We explore the album’s lush orchestration, studio craftsmanship, and the influence of the Immediate Records scene, including the key roles played by producer Andrew Loog Oldham and some of Billy's famous musician friends. We discuss the label troubles, industry upheavals, and twists of fate that kept this stunning record in the shadows for decades. Plus a great story of how a Beatle helped kickstart Billy's career!
Whether you’re a long-time admirer of this wonderful album or discovering it for the first time, this epysode unpacks the music, the myth, and the enduring magic that transformed a once-lost LP into a psych-pop holy grail.
I hope you dig "Would You Believe" as much as I do.

Only Three Lads: '80s Paisley Underground Legends The Rain Parade Reveal Their Top 5 Debut Singles
Who said you never get a second chance to make a first impression!?!? Well, we covered some of the best debut singles waaaay back in Episode 32...and now, five years later, we're back to revisit that topic. So take that, Head & Shoulders!
Hey, speaking of second times, guess who's back as our Third Lads this week? (No fair, you cheated by looking at the episode title!) Yes, that's right, it's guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Matt Piucci and bassist/vocalist/songwriter Steven Roback from seminal LA "Paisley Underground" band The Rain Parade! The last time Matt & Steven joined us (Episode 259), they subtly hinted that there was something in the works for their underrated second full-length album, 1985's Crashing Dream. We have now been treated to a spectacular double disc deluxe reissue on Label 51 Recordings, that not only gives fans an opportunity to re-appraise this lost gem, but is chock full of demos, alternate versions and live bonus tracks that flesh out the story of this fertile chapter in the Rain Parade legacy.
Prepare thyself for plenty of stories about the past, present, and future of Rain Parade, including recounting memories of their debut single, "What She's Done To Your Mind" from 1982. Hanging out with the guys is always a pleasure, but we digress. A lot.
Special thanks to Josh Mills.
