236: Write Your Book with Candice L. Davis and Miriam Schulman

If you've been thinking about writing a book, let's demystify the process. This episode shines a light on a few of the things that can make it a little less scary so you can actually write your book. Candice L. Davis is the book coach behind my first published book, Artpreneur. We're diving in and sharing many of the moments I've experienced becoming a published author and what Candice has seen many authors struggle with. It's hard to take the first step when you think you're the only one struggling with certain things. It's easier when you see what's possible in spite of your perceived challenges and learn there's support and a way around the real and perceived challenges of writing your first book. "You can become a great writer; these are just skills. It's a set of skills that you can develop" - Candice L. Davis Things that will encourage you to write your book: The challenges holding you back are common to many first-time writers Writing a book for a publisher is a different kind of pressure, but it's also rewarding Releasing a published book is a team effort not a solo sport, get the help you need early Writing a book takes much longer than I had anticipated, and it was a completely different experience than I believed it would be. Releasing a published book is truly like a birthing process, with pain and moments of frustration, but thankfully you get a whole team supporting the birth of your book if you take the traditional publishing route. The process and experience is so worth it in the end. I wish it for all of you wanting to share your message. 235: Proposing Your Book to Publishers with Allison Lane and Miriam Schulman

If you've been on the fence about publishing a book and overwhelmed about what goes into it, then this episode is going to answer many of your questions. I have to admit, getting my book traditionally published was not as simple as I thought it would be, but I have no regrets about the journey. Allison Lane helps people get published by guiding them through the process of writing a proposal to secure a book agent and ultimately get a publishing contract. I feel lucky to have had her guidance preparing my own book proposal for Artpreneur. "The book proposal becomes the anchor to every author's marketing ecosystem." -Allison Lane We're peeling back the layers of the marketing it takes to create a book proposal and what goes into pitching it. There are a number of areas you can get wrong attempting this process on your own, and Allison simplifies the process for you because of her marketing background. Key insights we discuss about book proposals: Your book proposal is an important marketing document that requires skill to pitch and is used even after the book is published How the right book comps in your book proposal are key for the editor to see what audiences your book can be marketed to Writing a captivating hook for the book proposal is a challenge when you don't keep in mind who is reading it and for what purpose. Be your best marketer by giving people access to you and how you and your work makes them feel Pitching a book takes lots of specialized skills, industry knowledge, and effort. If I had chosen the self-publishing route, it would have been a much different experience, but it would've also turned out to be a much different book. Regardless of the route you decide to go, don't be afraid to write your story and share it with the world. "Words really matter and understanding who the end recipient of those words are is really about empathy and understanding, all communication strategy is." -Allison Lane For full show notes go to schulmanart.com/235 ++++++++++++++++++++ 🎉FREE GOODIES!🎉 Don't forget to check out the Inspiration Place goodie bag. 232: You Don't Have to Sell Art In Person with Marianne Nielsen

Trying to earn a sustainable income from selling your art is never comfortable, but it's always worth it. The push back I hear most often from artists is selling art through social media, doing shows in person, or getting their art into a gallery. I want you to know that you don't have the sell art in person to be successful, there are many options available, but you do have to pick something. I've asked Marianne Nielsen to join us because she's had the same aversion to selling in person and has found a way around it that is more natural and in flow with her and her art style. "You have to do something, and then what you're doing, you have to lean into it really hard." -Miriam Schulman I want you to consider what methods of marketing and selling your art you've been most resistant to and what you could push yourself to try. Being uncomfortable is a part of your growth and journey as an artist and as a person. Key ideas and thoughts we're discussing: Nurturing and growing your email list isn't as scary as you think The trick Marianne uses to get a 60% open rate on her emails How Marianne is using Pinterest to grow her email list and get 200k+ visitors Our reaction to Benjamin Moore's color of the year for 2023 Marianne paints abstract art intuitively from her dining room overlooking the forest through the window, moved and inspired by her emotional state and mindset in the moment. As uncomfortable as she was to sending weekly emails, through my incubator program she allowed herself the discomfort and trusted the process. Selling art in person isn't the only option, and between Marianne's email list and Pinterest, there is inspiration for you to uncover what will work for you. "Painting has been a huge emotional healing process for me, and it still is, [...] It taught me so much about myself." - Marianne H. 231: Manifest Your Wildest Dreams with Miriam Schulman

You can manifest your wildest dreams even in your everyday life. What makes manifestation real is your ability and willingness to believe. You need to believe and visualize what you want to bring it into your conscious awareness. -Miriam Schulman What we're exploring in this episode: How you sabotage yourself when you're not willing to believe When you get clear with what you want, you'll be able to call it into your conscious awareness. How to open your mind to recognize when what you want comes your way[Text Wrapping Break] We block our ability to manifest through a lack of belief. We don't believe in ourselves. We don't believe what's really possible. We stand so firm on the very beliefs we should be questioning and end up undermining our own success. The universe will bring you things when you get clear about what you want and the opportunities you're looking for. You need positive belief and an open mind to recognize it when it comes your way. 230: Beautiful Writers with Linda Sivertsen and Miriam Schulman

Start imaging your roadmap to becoming an author with insights and writing inspiration from my guest, Linda Sivertsen. She's joining us to reveal how she helps writers navigate the beauty of writing a book and getting book proposals. "I just happen to be one of those freaky weird people who just loves the selling process. I love book proposals." -Linda Sivertsen What we're unpacking in this episode: The birthing process of writing Working with publishers and agents Selling your book before you write it There's so much to unpack in the book writing process. It's part beautiful, part painful, and part scary. Should you write a book, should you not write a book? One of the points Linda touches on is the pain of seeing someone die with the regret of not having written their story. Her beautiful reminder is to listen to your higher self when it comes to writing. If there's an internal nudge and inner voice saying to write this book, whatever it is, listen! 229: Tips to Sell More Art 2022

This Friday round up episode has 5 great tips to help you sell more art. No more starving artists here! Follow these simple steps to connecting with more customers and creating more sales. Mind Your Body Language to Sell More Art When you're selling in person, body language matters. In fact, I think it matters even if you aren't in person. You don't want to be the artist in the corner with your coffee. Plan to stand and project confidence and energy. Be mindful of the space that potential customers find comfortable, so they don't feel like you're hovering. Be approachable and ready to connect. Listen to Your Customers to Sell More Art When talking to a customer, it's hard not to interrupt. Don't do it! Active listening will help you understand what's important to them. You don't need to convince anyone. Feeling heard is going to mean much more to your customer. If selling more art is important to you, then pre-order a copy of Artpreneur and get the bonuses including the Artpreneur Affirmation Series. Good Salespeople Versus Bad Salespeople Bad salespeople feel like they have to convince. No one enjoys being talked at! Here's what you can do instead. Draft some great questions to prompt conversations. You'll sell more art, and people will truly enjoy talking to you too. Why You Should Avoid Autoresponders on Social Media Here's why you should avoid autoresponders on social media. Bots and automation are not helpful. People who want to engage with you on social are looking for human interaction. Nothing turns off a prospect faster than an automated response. When you respond, ask permission to take the next step. You don't have to share everything in one long message. Allow the conversation to evolve naturally. A Powerful Tip to Sell More Art What's in a name? Personalize your interactions and introduce yourself. It's going to help spark conversations, and you'll be much more likely to make a memorable impression. Be unforgettable and personable and you'll sell more art. More tips like this are in my book Artprenuer, available for pre-order now!

228: Marketing Lessons from Wall Street with Miriam Schulman

Life's lessons can come from unexpected sources. Looking back on my days working on Wall Street, I realize I was marketing myself even when I was an employee. So no matter what kind of work you do: for someone else, or for yourself, marketing matters. Marketing is about making yourself memorable. What we're unpacking in this episode: Extracting marketing lessons from my experience on Wall Street What you can learn about selling art from purse parties Refining your presentation skills and elevator pitch There are so many more nuggets to be taken from this experience that I share here, such as knowing your clients and understanding how to present your art in terms that excite collectors versus the way some of us default to describing styles and mediums of art. I share a story about how the host shared her art collection with me, and it's a great example you don't want to miss. People always collect art that has special meaning to them, and the more you can talk about your own personality, your own values, where you're from, the more likely you're going to connect… Mentioned in this episode: How to Use Your Natural Genius with Anna Tsui (Episode 218) Get Access to the Artpreneur Accelerator: Pre-Order My New Book, Artpreneur For full show notes go to schulmanart.com/228 ++++++++++++++++++++ 🎉FREE GOODIES!🎉 Don't forget to check out the Inspiration Place goodie bag. 227: How Artists Represent Feelings

Many artists credit their work as a way to manage or deal with anxiety, depression and other forms of mental illness. Since October is Mental Health Awareness month, I wanted to share the stories of artists who found a way to deal with their illness by creating art. Yayoi Kusama and Confronting Anxiety Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is known for her polka-dot art. She has been open about her mental health and shred that art has become her way to express her mental problems. In her words "I fight pain, anxiety, and fear every day, and the only method I have found that relieved my illness is to keep creating art." I feature her in my upcoming book Artpreneur when I talk about embracing your inner weirdo. Many artists suffer from anxiety and it's one of the reasons that I have mental health experts on the podcast. You can pre-order Artpreneur here. Edvard Munch and The Scream Edvard Much painted the scream a few years after his father passed away. He shared that the weight of the world had suddenly hit him. Growing up he was surrounded by death and depression and himself suffered with mental illness himself. He said, "art comes from joy and pain, but mostly from pain." I can relate to this. Maybe the art comes from pain, but it brings me great joy. Do you feel that way too? Artist Agnes Martin and Mental Illness Agnes Martin painted in a minimalist style but considered herself an part of the abstract expressionist movement. She suffered from hallucinations, depression and was often hospitalized and eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia. She used subtle color and meticulously drawn grids to create a calming effect. About her work she said "art is the concrete representation of our most subtle feelings. Her work is also part of the Paul Allen billion-dollar art action at Christies later this month. Abstract Artist Mark Rothko on Overcoming Sorrow Rothko's striking color combinations are meant to be meditations. He wanted to create art church's where people could look at art and pray. He said "I'm interested only in expressing basic human emotions and the fact that lots of people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I communicate those basic emotions. The people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience that I had when I painted them. Art has a spiritual effect on me. Does it affect you that way too? Let me know what you think. Artist Paul Klee on Relieving Stress Klee was a multi passionate artist who studied art and the violin. He was in his 30's before he focused on his art career. Even then, he changed his style often to defy categorization. He believed that creativity comes from beyond consciousness and that making art was a form of mediation. He said, "I paint in order not to cry." Why do you create art? I'd love to know.
