When you come into a household, give your greetings to it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not receive you, and will not listen to your words, when you leave that house or that city, shake off the dust of it from your feet. Our Commission as Disciples of the King. (Matthew 10: 1-8a)
Send us Fan MailThe Commission as Disciples of the King. (Matthew 10: 1-8a)1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot , who also betrayed him. (Matthew 10 1: 1-4)We are 10 chapters into this gospel account and Matthew has been unfolding his story of Jesus step by step. Following the advent story, Matthew told us about the baptism of Jesus. In that account Matthew shows us Jesus accepting the task that God had commissioned him to do. Then in the account of the Temptation in the wilderness Matthew shows us Jesus deciding on the methods he will use to embark upon his task. In the Sermon on the Mount, we listen to Jesus' words of wisdom and extensive teaching on how we might be right with God. In Matthew 8 and the opening part of chapter 9 we have now seen Jesus' miraculous works of power. Then in the close of chapter 9 we saw the growing opposition gathering itself against Jesus and his ministry. Now here at the beginning of chapter 10 we see Jesus choosing his followers and disciples. If a leader is about to embark upon any great undertaking, the first thing that he must do is to choose his followers. There are two facts about these men which are bound to strike us immediately.(i) They were ordinary men. (ii) They were the most extraordinary mixture of people. When we put together the three accounts of the calling of the Twelve certain illuminating facts emerge.(i) He chose them. (ii) He called them. (iii) He appointed them.(iv) They were chosen to be with him.(v) They were called to be apostles. The Mute Shall Speak. (Matthew 9: 32-38)
Send us Fan MailThe Mute Shall Speak. (Matthew 9: 32-38)A Mute Man Speaks32 As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon possessed. 33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marvelled, saying, “It was never seen like this in Israel!” 34 But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.” (Matthew 9: 32-34)This short little story of a man who is demon possessed and is unable to speak, most Bible commentators suggest that the mutism was a result of demon possession in this case. That was the lived experience of this man and the family and community around him as it tells us it was the community around him that brought him to Jesus and Jesus casts out the demon but look at the reaction of the crowd. Instead of rejoicing they say he has done this by the power of the ruler of demons, meaning Satan himself. Instead of saying wow he’s the Messiah, look at what he has done. Rather than bow the knee to the Messiah, they accuse him of being an agent of Satan. The Compassion of Jesus35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (Matthew 9: 35-38)This little is the second subsection of Matthew deals with Jesus going about practicing his ministry which consisted of preaching and teaching. We’re told in verse that “he looked at the crowd and he was moved to compassion”. It was not just their physical needs but their spiritual condition, their lack of nurture and guidance and protection that he is concerned about. Their so-called spiritual leaders have not been properly taking care of them and that leads Jesus to feel compassion for them.s, teachers, preachers and evangelists. Our Call as Disciples. In the next passage in Ch 10 verse 1 we wilSupport the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Miracles that Demonstrate The Perfect Messiahship of Jesus (Matthew 9: 18-31)
Send us Fan MailMiracles that Demonstrate The Perfect Messiahship of Jesus. (Matthew 9: 18-31)IntroductionHow do we know that Jesus is the Messiah. From a biblical point of view the answer to that is found most clearly in one book of the Bible than in all others. No other book of the scripture that attempts to demonstrate that he is from Messiah then the book of Matthew.A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed18 While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” 19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples.20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. 21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” 22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her, He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.23 When Jesus came into the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24 He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went out into all that land. 19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples. 20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. When they came into the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24 He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went out into all that land. More Lesson about Discipleship. (Matthew 9:11- 17)
Send us Fan MailMore Lesson about Discipleship. (Matthew 9: 11- 17) Reactions to Jesus Eating With “Sinners”.We have arrived at the point where Matthew (who was a tax collector) has decided to accept the call of Jesus on his life and follow him. Because Matthew was a tax collector, so this meant for him leaving his old life behind. But things don’t go as planned because the pharisee’s become aware of what is going on. 9 As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So, he arose and followed Him. 10 Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice [a quotation from Hosea chapter 6, by the way].’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners,]to repentance.” (Matthew 9: 9-13)Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting.14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. (Matthew 9:149-15)New Wine16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. 17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” (Matthew 9: 16-17)Summary........................................................................................The Bible Project Podcast (Daily - Monday-Friday)https://thebibleproject.buzzsprouSupport the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. Further Evidence that Jesus is the Messiah (Matthew 8 23-34)
Send us Fan MailMore Evidence that Jesus is the Messiah (Matthew 8: 23-34) Introduction.Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Messiah promised in the Old Testament. We are perishing!” 26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 So the men marvelled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?” (Matthew 8: 23-27)The Healing of the Demon Possessed Man28 When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” (Matthew 8: 1-4)The Old Testament predicted that a Messiah was coming, and Christians claimed the name of Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of that prophecy. The Jews for the most part, even to this day reject that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, and most believe they are still waiting for him to appear. So maybe we should ask how do we know that Jesus Christ is the Messiah promised in the Old Testament books in the Bible. Now the miracles come thick and fast and we’re going to look at each of these three groups of three miracles, maybe one at a time over the next week or so. Today we are just going to look at the first of that initial group of three. The first group depicts Jesus’ power over disease, and the second group portrays his power over nature, and then we will finally get to look at the third group which depicts his authority to forgive sin and his power over death. So today we’re going to begin look at the first of that group of three so look with me at Matthew chapter 8 beginning at verse one.I The Healing of the Man with Leprosy II The Next MiracleSupport the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E.
