Bonus Episode (Philosophy). Aristotle - Politics - A Christian Response (Apologetic)

Send us Fan MailAristotle – Politics. What makes a good society? How should it be governed and who should be allowed to live in it? These issues are what the Greek philosopher Aristotle called Politics. His writing now  2 1/2 thousand year old have cast a long shadow in political philosophy. In this work, Aristotle asked what made a society good using terms like ‘oligarchies’, ‘democracies’ and ‘monarchies’ that we still use today. In this highly influential work, Aristotle tried to establish a way of preserving a society through dangerous times. How should it be governed and who should be allowed to live in it? Thomas Hobbes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Aquinas, to name but a few, have all asked the same questions over the years since. .Aristotle’s conclusions range across the role of wealth and the law, about how men, women and slaves should be treated as well as discussing education and leisure. They are far reaching, influential and, at times, deeply unpalatable to the Christian Worldview. These are my notes and thoughts quickly drawn together and offered as a bonus episode to you my Patrons. I hope you find it helpful.William James - The Principles of Psychology" (1890): A Christian ResponsePart A - William James, His Life and Work.I.    Introduction.II.   Biography.III.  His Written Work and Ideas."The Principles of Psychology" (1890): "The Varieties of Religious Experience" (1902): "Pragmatism: A New Name for Some Old Ways of Thinking" (1907):"The Meaning of Truth" (1909): "Essays in Radical Empiricism" (1912):"The Will to Believe"(1896 lecture)."Theory of the self" (c1879 Lecture)Part B - A Christian Response."For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)This presents a wholly different perspective from James' idea of the importance of individual willpower and action in achieving salvation. According to Christian belief, salvation is a gift from God and not something that can be earned through one's own efforts. "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."  (Romans 5:1)Salvation is achieved through faith in Jesus Christ, rather than through the individual's own efforts or willpower. James' emphasis on the individual's own actions and willpower can be seen as a deviation from this fundamental Christian belief.Thesis, William James's theories present both challenges and opportunities for the Christian worldview. His emphasis on pragmatism and individualism may not align with Christian beliefs regarding truth and community, and while his theory of the will to believe and religious experience may offer a way into the faith for some seekers, on their own they can reveal the full Christian revelation or experience. Some aspects of James's philosophy can offer insights that are compatible with Christian beliefs, particularly his emphasis on the practicalSupport the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. These cities, totalling 48, lacked farmland but were supplied with grazing land for their livestock. Additionally, six cities were designated as refuges for individuals who accidentally killed someone. The arrangement ensured justice and protection for both Israelites and foreigners, with laws specifying the consequences for accidental and intentional killings. The assembly would judge cases, protecting the innocent from vengeance and ensuring that murderers faced justice. Premeditated murder carried the death penalty, while accidental killers found refuge until the high priest's death. The laws emphasized fairness and justice, with no ransom accepted for murderers or those seeking refuge. Bloodshed polluted the land, requiring atonement through the blood of the guilty. Ultimately, these laws aimed to maintain justice, provide refuge, and uphold the sanctity of life, reflecting God's care for His people and His presence among them.Support the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E. However, sometimes we experience "buyer’s regret"—we make a choice and then doubt if it was the right one. This episode examines Numbers 32, where some Israelite tribes make significant decisions that lead to profound lessons about regret and responsibility.Scriptural Context:Numbers 32 recounts the story of the Rubenites and Gadites, who, upon seeing the fertile lands of Jazer and Gilead, requested to settle there instead of crossing the Jordan with the rest of Israel. Moses' initial response highlights the potential consequences of their decision, drawing parallels to past disobedience and its repercussions.1. Sinful Decision Making:The initial request by the Rubenites and Gadites was driven by their own desires and convenience, disregarding God's command and their communal responsibilities. This selfish decision risked the unity and success of the Israelite nation.2. Regret and Reversal:Moses' stern rebuke led the tribes to experience "decision regret." Realizing their error, they proposed a compromise: they would build pens for their livestock and cities for their families but would still fulfil their military obligations to help the other tribes conquer the Promised Land.3. Lessons in Unity and Responsibility:This episode underscores the importance of unity and collective responsibility. Despite their initial misstep, the eventual commitment to support their fellow Israelites highlights the importance of aligning personal desires with communal duties and God's plan.4. Practical Principles for Decision Making:Drawing from the narrative, we distil five principles to avoid decision remorse:Reality: Face the truth of your situation.Revelation: Seek guidance from God’s Word.Relationships: Consider the impact on otheSupport the showFollow and support me on Patreon.Jeremy McCandless | Creating Podcasts and Bible Study Resources | PatreonTo receive my weekly newsletter and keep up to date with all five of my podcasts, subscribe at:Jeremy McCandless | SubstackCheck out my other Podcasts. The Bible Project: https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHistory of the Christian Church: https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.comThe L.I.F.E.
