For the second year in a row, the ceremony was streamed through Netflix, and the celebration of thirty years was entirely on display with various reunions and an all-around classy show that celebrated the union after a hard-fought victory following the SAG-AFTRA strikes earlier this year! There were some expected wins, unexpected wins, moving speeches, and one very interesting shakeup in one of the acting races as we head into the final days of Oscar voting, which concludes on February 27th. "The Teachers' Lounge" premiered at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, receiving critical acclaim for its direction, writing, and lead performance from Leonie Benesch. It went on to play many other film festivals throughout the year, ultimately receiving Germany's selection for Best International Feature Film at this year's Academy Awards. "Oppenheimer" has been a juggernaut this awards season, garnering praise, respect, and adoration for its technical accomplishments, writing and direction from Christopher Nolan, and the extraordinary performances of its ensemble cast, led by Cillian Murphy. Nominated for the first time in both of their careers for Oscars, Cillian Murphy (Best Actor) and Emily Blunt (Best Supporting Actress) have worked long and hard to receive this level of recognition finally. Murphy was kind enough to spend a few minutes with me before the Academy luncheon to discuss his journey through this awards season, working as the lead role in a Christopher Nolan film, and more, while Emily Blunt was interviewed by Ema Sasica few weeks earlier about her experience as well. "Barbie" was the highest-grossing film of 2023, became a cultural phenomenon, and has now earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera, and Best Production Design for production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer. "Oppenheimer" has been the toast of the 2023-2024 awards season, receiving a leading total of thirteen Academy Award nominations and winning (as of this writing) the Critics Choice and Golden Globe Awards for Best Picture. Christopher Nolan's latest masterpiece is a technical behemoth where every department worked at the top of their game to bring J. Robert Oppenheimer's story to life on the largest scale possible, impressively shot in IMAX. The Next Best Picture team was fortunate to speak with many of the Oscar-nominated craft members throughout this awards season. First, we have my interview with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, followed by Brendan Hodges' interview with the film's editor, Jennifer Lame, and sound designer, Richard King. Then we have Will Mavity's interview with makeup and hairstylist Luisa Abel. We then go back to Brendan for his talk with production designer Ruth De Jong, and we finally end with Will again speaking with costume designer Ellen Mirojnick.
