Ep. 779: How to Beat Monday - Mike Chambers

Weekend adventures: Mike Chambers and Jason Antin's Beat Monday mindset – leaving the office Friday at 5pm for epic summits like Mt. Rainier, bikerafting, big wall climbing, ultrarunning, and international trips, then back to work Monday 9am, as featured in their OutsideTV series and shared lessons on making massive adventures fit into real-life weekends. Summiting mountains in South America, bikepacking in the desert and climbing classic big wall routes sound like epic adventures that you’d have to save lots of vacation days for, right? The travel alone would take up at least a day or two, especially for any international trips. Not to mention making arrangements for other responsibilities like kids, pets, work, etc. Mike Chambers and his adventure partner, Jason Antin, think otherwise. In fact, they think you can leave the office on Friday at 5pm, have an adventure of a lifetime and be back at work at 9am on Monday. Is it easy? Of course not. Is it worth it? C’mon now. It all started when Mike was living in Boston and Jason was based in Colorado and the two came up with the bright idea of summiting Mt. Rainier in a true weekend. To the astonishment of the park rangers that hesitantly granted them the permit, their plan worked. Although the morning meetings that Monday were not as productive as they usually were, they both walked away with a pretty epic response to the age-old question, “what did you do this weekend?” Once the concept of Beat Monday was proven, Jason and Mike began dreaming of what else could be possible with this format. Bikerafting, big wall climbing, ultrarunning, and international travel began to fill their weekends and was even made into an OutsideTV series, Beat Monday. Mike is joining us today to tell us about what he’s learned through the Beat Monday mindset and what’s possible for you to beat whatever your Monday is. Follow Mike and Beat Monday below:Beat Monday on OutsideTV@mike_chambers@beatmondayBeatMonday.comSupport Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here. Head over to bluefinsupboards.com to check out their insane Black Friday sale where you can get up to $150 off! Ep. 778: Self-Supported Paddleboarding Adventure in Nepal - Revisited - Liam Kirkham

River rafting in Nepal: Liam Kirkham's epic downhill river journey to mark fatherhood, defying "no time for adventure" warnings, buying a non-refundable ticket to Nepal, and convincing an inexperienced friend over beers to join the paddleboard-inspired expedition. Usually, we hear from folks climbing the record-breaking peaks of the Himalayas when we talk about Nepal. However, today is a little different. We’re actually heading downhill and talking about an epic river trip by Liam Kirkham, a veteran guest of the show and a fantastic storyteller. He was previously on episode 344 talking about solo winter kayaking trip through the Grand Canyon.Liam recently became a father and was trying to combat what so many people tell him, “you’ll have no time for that” or “your priorities will change”. He’s learned that they were half right. As a way to ensure he’d do something epic to kickoff fatherhood, he bought a non-refundable plane ticket to Nepal and let the idea of the journey grow from there. A few months earlier he had intended to do a paddleboard trip down the River Thames but life had gotten in the way, however, the remnants of a paddleboard trip were still lingering in his mind. He started reading guidebooks and looking at maps for a river that would be suitable. He also began looking for someone to go with him. After several pints of beer with a good friend (with no experience) he convinced him to join. Ep. 777: How to Finish an Ironman - Maddie Stambaugh

Ironman triathlon: Maddie's journey from marathoner to crossing the finish line as an Ironman – overcoming setbacks, mastering swim-bike-run challenges, battling crazy ocean waves on race day, and the biggest lessons in preparation, perseverance, and finishing without compromise. This episode is original from Without Compromise. Finishing an Ironman race is at the very top of many endurance athletes’ bucket lists. It’s a daunting goal to put all the training, logistical, and motivational pieces together to pull off such an extreme athletic achievement. For Maddie, it was the ultimate athletic goal. Being a marathoner, she had a leg up on folks starting from scratch, but running is still only one-third of the skills you need for a triathlon, so the math was still against her. Despite many setbacks and many times she could have logically bowed out of training and preparation, Maddie continued through every challenge, even up to race day (the ocean waves were crazy!), yet she successfully crossed that finish line and heard those fateful words, “You are an Ironman!”. Listen in to hear the biggest lessons that Maddie learned in preparation and on race day, and what it takes to finish an Ironman without compromise. Follow Maddie at @marathon_mads94Support Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here. To learn more about Athletic Brewing’s award-winning non-alcoholic craft beer, go to AthleticBrewing.comOur Sponsors:* Check out Outdoorsy and use my code ASP for a great deal: https://www.outdoorsy.comAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
