489: A path back from PTSD with former war correspondent Dean Yates

For decades, Dean Yates decades was the ideal warzone correspondent: courageous, compassionate, dedicated. After years of facing the worst moments imaginable - including the Bali bombings and the Boxing Day tsunami, it was one final incident which undid him. In July 2007, two of his staff members were brutally gunned down by an American helicopter in Iraq. What followed was an unravelling of everything Dean thought he knew of himself. His PTSD was compounded by his moral wound - the devastation of what he thought he knew of the world and his own character and beliefs. To get better took a while. Years of treatment, including several stints inside a psychiatric facility. But he did get better, and is doing a lot better - and it’s so important to know that you can treat these kind of issues. Your life doesn’t have to be horrible. But you have to want to get better, and you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get there. This conversation talks about Moral Injury, PTSD, describes some pretty reprehensible acts of violence, and crosses into discussing suicide. ***** If you feel like voting for me for the 2023 Gold Logie, you can do so at https://www.tvweeklogies.com.au/Stay up to date on more upcoming NTNNNNN shows by joining the mailing list here: Osher Günsberg - Better Than Yesterday Podcast | LinktreeAnything else? 488: Celeste Mountjoy and the Question: "What The F**k Is This?"

Celeste Mountjoy is a Melbourne based artist, who has become a voice for a generation of women that, she says, are no longer prepared to smile politely at the outrages, uncertainties, and absurdities of life on the path to adulthood. Celeste uses her art to share her observations on being young, female and occasionally seriously fucked off. She started sharing her illustrations on Instagram at the age of 14 and now, almost a decade later her Instagram FilthyRatBag has garnered a huge following. Celeste has also released a book of illustrations called What The Fuck Is This, featuring over 100 previously unreleased drawings and comics. She joins me today for an intimate conversation about using her illustrations to share her story about being a young girl navigating through mental illness, substance abuse, love, grief and time with artwork. 487: You're Not To Blame for Tech Addiction with Prof Gaia Bernstein

Professor Gaia Bernstein is an expert in privacy and policy law, and is co-director of Gibbons Institute of Law Science and Technology. Her latest book "Unwired: Gaining Control over Addictive Technologies" explores device addiction and what it’s doing to us. Rather than blaming users, the book really shatters the illusion that we autonomously choose how to spend our time online. It shifts the moral responsibility and accountability for solutions to corporations. Drawing lessons from the tobacco and food industries, the book demonstrates why government regulation is necessary to curb technology addiction. If you’re concerned about your screen time, or what too much screen time is doing to you let alone your kids - this episode is an epic.
