Humanity has been so conditioned with guilt and condemnation, feelings of inadequacy, unworthiness, and fear that, if we are honest, it is hard to really believe that, not only does God love us, but that He is passionately for us. Religion, either institutional or individual legalism, has oppressed and haunted humanity with fear, condemnation, and bondage. But God is after every trace of anything that makes His kids feel orphaned, separate, unworthy, sinful, or ashamed. He relentlessly seeks to tear down the lies that He is distant and that His promises require our striving or involve delay. He adores all His kids and fervently pursues intimacy with them. The Scriptures are an essential aspect of the Christian faith. But we have often equated them with the living Word Himself, even elevating them above the One to whom they point. In doing so, we have distorted their central message—and our view of God. Tragically, this has caused multitudes of people unnecessary doubt, confusion, and pain in their encounters with the Scriptures. Many people understand God as being truly loving and good. Yet, they struggle with depictions of God in Scripture as wrathful, violent, and genocidal. These “toxic texts” have caused some to set aside their Bibles as R-rated and unreliable. They have led others to completely reject their faith. Author and theologian Bradley Jersak has wrestled deeply with such passages over many years. He has experienced the same questions, doubt, and pain. In A More Christlike Word, he offers a clarifying and freeing path forward. Whether readers consider themselves believers, doubters, or skeptics, all are invited to a more beautiful and ancient way of reading the Scriptures. Bradley calls this path the “Emmaus Way” because it demonstrates how Jesus regarded all Scripture as fulfilled in himself, the final Word of God who reveals the true nature of the Father. After deconstructing the modern biblicist/literalist approaches to Scripture interpretation that have failed us, Brad turns to the early church for a hermeneutic of prefigurement, treating the Bible as the grand narrative of redemption, told through a polyphony of voices and worldviews, culminating in the arrival of Christ as the eternal Word of God—what God has to say about himself. Brad served as a pastor and church planter for twenty years, where he developed a heart for restorative justice for people with disabilities, addictions and economic disadvantages. In 2009, Brad began Ph.D. studies in political theology at Bangor University (Wales). After graduating, he was invited to teach at Westminster Theological Centre (UK), then at SSU and IRPJ, eventually becoming Dean of the Theology & Culture program. We were made for relationship. That is why we are in the most pain when relationships go south. Our rights matter, but a culture where demanding our rights seems to be the only thing that is right, asserting our rights can trample others’ rights and relationships can be devastated. We divide and feel justified in our division, and we end up embittered and alone. Boundaries are helpful here, but we need to understand them rightly, so that they are healthy, powerful, and life-giving. If I hear one cry repeatedly is the cry to experience God’s love. The need to be loved is universal and so foundational that we allow people to “love us” in toxic ways, if healthy ways are not present. It is one thing to talk about God’s love, write about God’s love, and preach about God’s love. It is quite another to genuinely experience God’s love. When we do, it is impossible to leave the encounter the same way we entered into it. We are simply transformed because we are seeing and experiencing Him as He really is. When God created the seen realm and His Kids to benevolently reign over it, He delighted in every aspect. It was good, it was good, they were VERY good. Jesus prayed that we would be one, even as He and the Father are one. Jesus also gave us the commandment to love as He loves. However, human beings, and unfortunately especially the church, have a track record of gathering around doctrine instead of the Person of Christ, Who is other-giving Love. Doctrines tend to separate and divide us, especially when they cause us to judge and withhold love. We are to be known for our love for one another, not our doctrine. Perfectionism is a taskmaster that is never satisfied. This is worse when it is paired with the legalism of religion. Our perspective of God is warped. He is either angry, never satisfied, or disappointed. Somehow we have not done enough or not done well enough. Excellence is not perfection. The illusion of perfectionism is that it is attainable and even desirable as something we are to do. It is based on a lie that we are not worthy and valuable, unless we are perfect. But our completion and perfection has already been established in Christ. If we strive to become, we are missing what we already are. But God is all about freedom for His kids.
