Hortons and Hunt is made up of three Hortons, Jesse, Micah and their father Curtis along with their long time friend and mentor Bryon Hunt. Located in the Nevada area, they realized that realistic fire training was in strong demand. The creation of Hortons and Hunt Training Associates was to deliver specific, real world training focusing on the basics, getting away from the industry’s “whiz bang” new flavor of the day. A core belief in the true basics parallels the brothers’ love for rolling on mats. In jujitsu, the details matter - small things like hand placement, technique and mindset drive Jesse and Micah to perfect each movement so that they become a master of their craft. Both brothers challenge each other, pushing one another to better themselves daily. Part of their passion is to share their own experiences and knowledge on their podcast, the Undisclosed Agents Podcast which talks about the job with guests who bring their own unique story to their show. Their constant push to better themselves and the job is evident by their hard work and willingness to push boundaries. Like their search class titled “The Finest Hour”, these brothers along with their partners are working hard to ensure they match the phrase in each aspect of the job. Retired Deputy Chief Anthony Avillo loves the fire service but a the Beatles and English rock certainly can compete. Anthony has had an extensive career that began early on with his first memories of the Tiller truck and Snorkel turning out for runs from his neighborhood firehouse. He found himself playing football, attending college and by chance, taking the fire test which began his journey in firefighting. He credits his upbringing and football on his dedication and work ethic. His foundation was strong which lead to a successful career with the Weehawkin, NJ Fire Department, which eventually became the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department. Retiring in 2015 as a Deputy Chief, Chief Avillo began teaching and sharing his perspective and experience with the fire service. A published author, presenter and leader in the fire service, his knowledge is overshadowed by his zest for learning. He runs with the heavy hitters and values the relationships he has made over the years. While he continues to push the job forward, he certainly recognizes the need to pass the baton to the next generation. Mentoring and paying it forward is at the forefront of making this job better, and Anthony Avillo is doing just that. For the past 21.5 years, Lt. Paramedic Jimmy Berry has enjoyed working in the busiest companies. His longest and most enjoyable stint has been with Truck 30, Orange County, FL Fire Rescue. When Jimmy reports to the firehouse each tour, the questions of "What adventure are we going to have today" tends to be their theme. Going to fires is the norm, but the truck also has rescue support work that is performed at America's most prestigious theme parks. "America's Truck" is a good place to work and Jimmy appreciates the sense of family in the firehouse. He is passionate about family; his own as well as those that he rides with each tour. His infectious smile would lead you to believe the job has always been good to him but in fact, there was a time where he wanted to walk away. The job can get heavy and it takes its' toll on our people. Jimmy was not exempt from this aspect of the job he grew to love. Overcoming this difficult time, Jimmy has grown to love the job and what it has to offer. Learning how to deal with the emotional stress of the job has become a big part of how he navigates the firehouse today. Enjoy what you have and what you do.
