Nerdy Photographer

077 - Capturing the Supernatural: The Legacy of Spirit Photography in Ghost Stories
We are finishing out spooky season with a very special show! Why is it that human beings are so obsessed with photographing the paranormal? In this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, I speak with monster expert, Dr. Emily Zarka from the PBS show Monstrum about all sorts of monsters and why they can or can't be photographed (according to legend). From ghost hunts to Bigfoot to vampires that don't show up on film, we talk about why, even in stories, it is so difficult to get photographic evidence of monsters! About My Guest "I'm Emily Zarka. I earned a Doctor of Philosophy in English from Arizona State University, specializing in British Romantic literature with an emphasis on the Gothic. I approach literature and film through monsters, applying the theory that human history is monster history. I am the writer and host for "Monstrum," an online series with PBS's Storied channel on YouTube that looks at complex histories and motivations behind some of the world's most famous monsters. I also wrote and hosted a one-hour documentary for PBS called Exhumed: A History of Zombies." You can also follow the good doctor on Twitter. Are You Entertained? Do You Enjoy the Podcast? 074 - One Hour Photo
It's spooky season, and, in this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, we take a look at a VERY creepy photography related movie, One Hour Photo. This 2002 Robin Williams film about a photo technician who becomes obsessed with a family takes us back to a time before digital cameras and phone cameras when many people were still getting film developed. I invited Josh from the For Nerds by Nerds Podcast to join me to take a look at this disturbing motion picture. We ponder how times have changed since this movie was released, both in the sense of how we as a society partake in photography and general societal norms. There are definitely some things in this movie that would not play out the same way today. Want to listen along with our commentary? Rent or buy the movie from Amazon or you can currently stream on HBO MAX. Support the Nerdy Photographer Want to help an independent podcast? Start by subscribing to the podcast!
