Trust Isn’t What You Think: The 3 Elements That Change Everything

Most leaders believe they’re trustworthy. But what if trust isn’t built the way you think? In this episode, Martin Johnson unpacks the hidden mechanics behind trust and introduces a powerful framework: The Trust Equation. We assume trust is about intention or likability. The Dangerous Gap Between What You Mean and How You’re Seen

Most of us believe we’re doing the right thing. But what if everyone else thinks the same?In this episode, Alex Mather and Spencer Locker explore a powerful leadership blind spot: we judge ourselves by our intentions, yet we judge others by their actions. That gap quietly drives conflict, erodes trust, and undermines psychological safety inside teams. From emotional intelligence to behavioural triggers and psychometrics, this conversation unpacks how everyday leadership behaviours shape culture far more than leaders realise.Because leadership isn’t judged by what you meant. It’s judged by how your behaviour is experienced.Discover more about psychometric tools here: https://trans2performance.com/psychometric-toolshttps://trans2performance.com/leading-yourself-----Follow The People Performance Podcast for leadership, culture, and high-performance insights:Instagram: @peopleperformancepodcastTikTok: @peopleperformancepod🎙️ Brought to you by T2 – The People Performance People Website: www.trans2performance.com LinkedIn: T2 – The People Performance People About the host, Martin Johnson:https://trans2performance.com/martin-johnson

What Nobody Tells You About High Performance and How to Lead

Most organisations talk about peak performance. But what if that’s the wrong target entirely? In this Leader Lounge episode of the People Performance Podcast, Martin Johnson breaks down the difference between peak, high, and optimal performance, and why chasing peak can quietly damage leaders and teams. Instead, Martin explores the concept of optimal performance: doing the best you can with the time, resources, and realities in front of you. From navigating flow and drudgery to balancing supportive and assertive leadership, this episode offers a practical and refreshingly honest view of what sustainable performance actually looks like in the real world.Because long-term success isn’t built on perfect conditions, it’s built on how you lead when conditions aren’t perfect. -----Follow The People Performance Podcast for leadership, culture, and high-performance insights:Instagram: @peopleperformancepodcastTikTok: @peopleperformancepod🎙️ Brought to you by T2 – The People Performance People Website: www.trans2performance.com LinkedIn: T2 – The People Performance People About the host, Martin Johnson:https://trans2performance.com/martin-johnson

Mastering the Inner Chimp: From Insanity to Optimal Performance

In this episode James Cooper and Rich McCarthy discusses how to manage the biological and psychological factors that influence professional performance. The conversation centers on navigating high-pressure situations by understanding the brain's internal systems.James brakes down the "Chimp Paradox" model by Dr. Steve Peters, which identifies three primary systems in the brain:The Chimp (Limbic System): The emotional centre that reacts to feelings and is five times stronger and faster than the human brain. The Human (Frontal Lobe): The logical side that handles facts, truths, and reasoning, but requires 60 to 90 seconds to fully engage in a situation. The Computer: A background "hard drive" of memory that both the Chimp and Human pull from during various scenarios.Since the "Chimp" cannot be controlled, only managed, James and Rich introduce the ABC technique to help the logical brain take over:A - Acknowledge: Recognising the current situation and the emotions being felt.B - Breathe: Bringing oxygen into the body to mitigate rising cortisol levels.C - Control: Focusing on the "controllables" the specific elements within your ownership that can be changed to move forward. The episode also explores three states of mind that dictate how we handle stress and control:Neutral State: Operating in a comfort zone with low stress and high control.Challenge State: A high-performance zone characterised by moderate-to-high stress but maintained high levels of control.Threat State: A state of panic where stress is high and perceived control is low, often leading to a "flight" response. The hosts conclude by emphasising the "Transition Zone" the fork in the road where individuals must choose to use awareness, communication, and reflection to move toward a Challenge mindset rather than a Threat mindset.Social LinksInstagram - ttps://www.instagram.com/peopleperformancepodcast/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/t2-thepeopleperformancepeopleTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@peopleperformancepod
