THE ANGRIEST TRAINER 343: ONE-ON-ONE WITH SERENA SCOTT THOMAS
Vinnie is very happy to have the amazing, beautiful and talented Serena Scott Thomas on to talk to her about her 50 mile run. She is now officially an ultra-runner! Serena ran the Avalon 50 on Catalina Island. Not only did she finish in 11 hours and 40 minutes but she did it for a really good cause. She raised over $5,000 for InSitu Foundation which trains rescue dogs to detect early stage cancer by smell. They also discuss Serena’s movie, Inherent Vice, which is up for an Independent Spirit Award. Listen in as Vinnie tries to speak with a British accent... PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Pure Vitamin Club Amazon THE DAY OF THE RACE Serena felt terrified...everyone told her how difficult your first 50 mile race is There was 7,000 feet of climbing The race started 5 am Saturday morning and all was well as the sun came up It started to drizzle but by 20 miles the rain started coming down Serena didn’t have her raincoat and she got wet and cold DURING THE RACE Mud was clay and incredibly slippery It was so muddy and slippery, couldn’t do downhill It was miserable...besides being cold and wet, her running shoes were not “grippy” enough Mud was very deep and sticking to her shoes WHAT SHE LEARNED At about 40 miles, Serena had a low moment and stopped at Aid Station because she needed something to eat with fat in it. She had gone through her nuts The only things available were sugary things like jelly beans, M&M’s and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches She needed to have more fatty foods with her DIET THE DAY OF THE RACE Usually Serena doesn’t eat in the morning...just coffee with heavy cream and a handful of nuts The day of the race, she had a hard-boiled egg, 1/2 apple and full-fat yogurt She did some sugar trickle Serena wished she had some nuts, some cheese, some olives and something hot to drink

She reveals the unhealthy, inhumane, degrading treatment contestants are routinely subjected to and how generally contestants gained back all the weight they lost once they were on the show. What is it based on? And after they are done going through the list, they settle down to talking about injuries. What injuries are and how to treat them. Listen and learn... Vinnie didn’t pay a publicist to get him on it When Fitness Confidential came out, he hired and fired two publicists It wasn’t worth the money TENDONITIS AND INJURIES A tendon connects a muscle to bone. A ligament is like a small cushion to keep bones from rubbing together When you pull or strain a muscle, just a few fibers in the muscle have broken apart A muscle tear or rip has to be repaired by surgery The only way to treat a pull or strain is ice and rest ICING AND STRETCHING Ice at least 3 times a day for at least 20 minutes As cold as possible covering the injured area Don’t use foam roller or tennis ball until pain has subsided Stretching keeps muscles supple...take time and ease into it
