All because of a lift

What would you do if you're expected at work but you are STUCK in a library? Yes I know, a library. Getting into a lift might be just part and parcel of having a disability BUT that doesn't mean that when things do go wrong, it isn't 💩 If it can happen, it always seems to happen to @petahooke 😅😬 You can ask Peta a question via: The website: www.icantstandpodcast.com Email: icantstandpodcast@gmail.com You can follow Peta's personal account on Instagram @petahooke Episode transcript    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mummy, why is she in that?

Oh gosh, the dog is barking at them. Oh, no now my three-year-old is pointing at them staring. What do I do?  Peta has the solution to your problem. [Trigger Warning] This weeks' episode is a practical guide of what to do if your fur baby or actual baby responds to a person with a disability in a less than perfect way. If Peta got a dollar for every time a child asks their mother, 'mummy, why is she in that?' Peta would be a squillionaire.  You can ask Peta a question via: The website: www.icantstandpodcast.com Email: icantstandpodcast@gmail.com You can follow Peta's personal account on Instagram @petahooke Episode transcript  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My worst day with a disability

Wait, wait! I know what you're thinking but this is not some depressing story about when Peta experienced disability discrimination. Nope. It's about the day that she ruined her close friends' 21st birthday. Do people with disabilities experience privilege?

From a young age, Peta knew she was both very lucky but also a bit unlucky in what cards she had been dealt. Overall though she knew she was privileged. Peta feels grateful for the privileges she has in life, but when her disability is what others see it can be hard to have her voice reflect others in the disability community. This week Peta discusses the guilt she feels for not truly reflecting the minority group she is apart of. Can you be a feminist and have a disability?

Having a disability can mean feeling vulnerable more often than those without a disability. When you have to rely on machines and other people to guarantee your independence, it can sometimes feel difficult to be the empowered feminist, you know you want to be. Peta discusses the contradiction of her identity as a person with a disability and her identity as an independent, empowered woman. What is the most surprising thing about having a disability?

Growing up Peta was presented with three representations of disability. Based on the media representations in the 90’s she could either be a cute kid with a disability, a sports person with a disability or a person in a car crash ad. She knew instinctively that she wasn’t going to fit into any of these as she grew up. Afterall the public was only prepared for her not fit into one of those three groups; so why was she so surprised to go from being considered cute to purely inconvenient You can ask Peta a question via: The website: www.icantstandpodcast.com Email: icantstandpodcast@gmail.com You can follow Peta's personal account on Instagram @petahooke Episode transcript/blog post   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I'm most likely to be discriminated against in my own home.

What do you think it would be like to be asked by a complete stranger, “do you had friends?” What about if this stranger asked, while in your home at 6:30 in the morning? While you had bed hair and coffee breath. Not the best start to anyone’s morning. This week Peta reflects on if the treatment she has experienced by nurses and disability support workers is not actually ignorance but discrimination. She goes on to reveal the most heartbreaking question she has even been asked.
