Mormon Stories Podcast Mormons Meet Bible Scholar - Bart Ehrman | Ep. 2120
From Born Again To Agnostic Through Scholarship
- Bart Ehrman describes his journey from evangelical convert to agnostic atheist driven by scholarship and suffering questions.
- He studied Greek and Hebrew at Moody, Wheaton, and Princeton, found textual errors and contradictions, and eventually lost belief over the problem of suffering.
Bible As Anthology Not Unity Text
- The Bible is not a single unified book but an anthology of many books written by different authors at different times.
- Recognizing distinct authors, audiences, and theologies changes interpretation and reveals internal contradictions and diversity of views.
One Classroom Comment That Cracked Inerrancy
- A Princeton Mark seminar term paper convinced Ehrman a Gospel could simply contain an error when his professor suggested Mark 'made a mistake.'
- That moment unlocked recognition of many contradictions and shifted him away from inerrancy.

Today, we are very excited to have back on the podcast Bible scholar and best selling author, Bart Ehrman! Bart has very recently retired as a professor from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he is here with us today to “meet the Mormons” and answer questions on the Old Testament, New Testament, and even offers his professional opinions on Book of Mormon History. Bart and the panel will also discuss his brand new book, Love Thy Stranger, and some of his other works that we believe our audience would love.
We are truly privileged to have Bart with us today to share his thoughts on the history of Jesus and the Bible, and hope you find this conversation as engaging as we did.
You can pre-order Love They Stranger here.
