At long last, the pilot episode of our new series The Historians (or whatever we end up calling it). Pretty straight forward concept: every month, Moynihan talks to an academic about interesting moments, events, and epochs in history, going much deeper than most boring podcasts. Just for you Patreon subscribers.
Our inaugural guest is right in MM's wheelhouse. In 2019, Harvard historian Duncan White published Cold Warriors: Writers Who Waged the Literary Cold War, an unputdownable chronicle of those brave, reckless, and deranged writers who waged a quiet war on (and occasionally on behalf of) Soviet totalitarianism. White and Moynihan chat about Orwell, Solzhenitsyn, le Carré, whether it was immoral for the CIA to fund literature and journalism, and that time when Duncan's neighbor was arrested as a Stasi agent.
Enjoy.
