The Fifth Column (private feed for bitterone31droid@googlemail.com) Members Only #140 - Welch Cassingles Jon Chait
Look, it’s the rule: When sufficiently annoyed, record a Cassingle. Except I’m not actually annoyed, just…a tad reflective, about journalism and politics and honesty and comportment, after being accused by New York magazine writer Jonathan Chait of writing something I decidedly did not. Some background material.
* I wrote this.
* Chait then wrote a thing about what I did not say, so I tweeted to him, then he tweeted back, then I tweeted, and he tweeted, and thank God Elon is going to nuke that company into the sun. (Chait has since done another tweet-thread, which includes the words: “I believe his passage did say that, and I quoted the entire thing, but I believe him when he says he didn't intend to say that.”)
* Wait, don’t go! Here’s me debating Chait at a January 2017 SoHo Forum event about whether Barack Obama was a “great president”:
* This is … not my first rodeo.
* That Michael Kinsley memo (and others besides).
* My 1998 Tabloid.net reminiscence about drinking with Hunter Thompson at age 18; seven years later, my Reason obit.
