Is Your Idea of Historical Problem Spaces Captured?

A decade ago I was doing some writing with the play the past blog which was a great early group of historical game studies folks. They were looking at Sid Meier's colonization the remake the 2008 remake and really taking it to task for a lot of the deeply problematic sort of imperial colonial messages that were that were going on in that video game. What I remembered thinking to myself though was I don't know if our game designers are thinking about they're not thinking about the world like a critic probably because you can't, right? And so this idea then that games are historical problem spaces is key to understanding them as a medium.
