The most important part is that you have to get out of debate frame. Never try to copy and paste your reasoning into the other person. Don't create a dynamic where I want to win and I want you to lose. Be aware that they're a social primate. And when it comes down to it, if the situation requires it, you'll put your reputation on the lifeboat and you'll let your body sink to the bottom of the ocean.
