There were 20 PE firms back then now there's 5,000. How competitive was it to source deals in the 1980s? "It always feels competitive no matter where you are in history or any given time" Today private equity is so much more professional and my firm has 200 people we're proactively super deep in specific industries like life science supplies. It's gone from kind of the small generalist to really sophisticated business building organizations who use frankly less debt as a percentage of the capital structure.
