Constraints of a middle power

The Iran war is escalating and one side thinks India is punching way above its weight. The other thinks Modi has undermined India and it punches below its strength. Both are wrong. Through its independent history, then (Congress era) and now (under Modi), India has punched according to its weight. It has, however, always had an exaggerated sense of its own power and authority—more moral, philosophical and ideological in the past; more strategic, economic and spiritual now.
