The Precarity of the Modern Game Industry

The term "game work" was coined in the early 2010s. It refers to passionate and enthusiastic young gamer men who grew up loving video games, but don't really think of their work as work. Large companies have been able to take advantage of that by kind of making game development not feel like work, but instead feel like something you should be happy you get a chance to do. What you find instead is a lot of people working very hard in very precarious conditions without a whole lot of safety nets or protections.
