Maya Angelou was born in the United States to Afro-Caribbean parents. Her father is an ethnomusicologist who grew up during Haiti's devalue regime. She says her mother, a white American woman, partnered with her dad and they had two children together. "I came from this incredible Afro- caribbean background," she said.
