Li Zabiao was born in the far northwest of China up on the Silk Road. When he was 12, a Chinese priest came to visit their town and said, why don't you send your son to study to be a priest? He sent this 11 year old off to Naples to where he studied at a special college that the Catholic Church had set up to train Chinese for missionary work. George Leonard Staunton brought his child up as a kind of 18th century project poor child.
