The Afterlife of a Missionary
After the embassy, Lee goes off to be a missionary. But mostly he lives in quite comfortable life. When you say he's a missionary, he's basically a priest of a huge area. The area he was priest of is about the size of Norway with about 300 small congregations. So it puts some British clergy who complain about large parishes in perspective. As the emperor becomes more hostile to the Europeans and also because they've been religious rebellions in China set off by Buddhist sectarian groups, the Chinese state becomes very concerned on cracking down on religious groups. And so Lee is living in this world and he ends up having to go into hiding.
