Napoleon and the French Military
Napoleon was able to consolidate his power, and leave some constructive legacies such as the napoleonic code. The armies of the french revolution inherited a wealth of really innovative ideas from french ensint regime military reformers. Napoleon knew that he had seized power inreally in a fashion which was of dubious legality. He himself was always vulnerable to cudeta, to plots to assassination attempts. And also, he tied his fortunes to conflict and to conquest so very, very fearful that if he began to lose it would be all over for him.
