In this innovative book, Richard Elliott Friedman provides his own translation of the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), using different colors and type styles to distinguish the four main sources: Jahwist (J), Elohist (E), Priestly (P), and Deuteronomist (D), along with redactors.

He presents the largest collection of evidence for the Documentary Hypothesis, allowing readers to see the individual sources, their artistry, historical context, and how they were combined into the Torah.

Friedman's model places the sources in the order J-E-P-D, differing from traditional views.
