The Trail Went Cold - Episode 287 - Danny Casolaro

August 10, 1991. Martinsburg, West Virginia. The nude body of 44-year old freelance investigative journalist Danny Casolaro is discovered inside the bathtub of his hotel room. Each of his wrists have been slashed multiple times, but since a suicide note is found and there is no evidence of foul play, the authorities conclude that Danny took his own life. In the year prior to his death, Danny claimed he was working on a massive story about widespread government corruption which he titled “The Octopus” and had supposedly travelled to Martinsburg to meet a source who would provide him with important information. Since the investigation contains number of suspicious mistakes and discrepancies, Danny’s loved ones believe he was murdered and that a cover-up took place. Did Danny Casolaro’s death actually a suicide or did his investigation into “The Octopus” put his life at risk and cause him to become the victim of foul play? This week, “The Trail Went Cold” will be presenting one of the longest and most convoluted episodes we’ve ever done, as we explore a truly controversial unexplained death. The Trail Went Cold - Episode 286 - Tracey Ann Patient

January 29, 1976. Auckland, New Zealand. 13-year old Tracey Ann Patient leaves her friend’s house to walk home, but never arrives. The following day, Tracey’s body is discovered in some bushes located sixteen kilometres from where she was last seen. She has been strangled to death with a pair of pantyhose which were tightened around her neck with a stick. Nearly two years later, police receive an anonymous phone call from a man who claims that a missing signet ring Tracey had worn can be found in a rubbish bin and he also provides a series of numbers which he says are connected to the case. Even though investigators do recover the ring from this location, they are unable to figure out the meaning of the caller’s numbers and Tracey’s killer is never identified. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel down under to New Zealand to explore one of their most prominent unsolved murder cases. Special thanks to listener Kimberly Wyse for narrating the opening of this episode. The Trail Went Cold - Episode 285 - Dana Bradley

December 14, 1981. St. John’s, Newfoundland. 14-year old Dana Bradley leaves her friend’s residence to head back home, but she never arrives and eyewitnesses report seeing her hitchhiking and climbing into a vehicle driven by an unidentified man. Four days later, Dana’s body is found in a remote wooded area and she has been killed by multiple blows to the skull with a blunt instrument. Over the next four decades, investigators explore a number of different leads, included a confession from a suspect that is later recanted and an account from a witness who claims he was present when Dana’s murder took place, but these leads never pan out and all attempts to identify the killer are unsuccessful. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we return to our podcast’s home country of Canada to explore what is probably the most famous unsolved cold case from the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Newfoundland & Labrador divisional headquarters of the RCMP at (709) 772-5400 or the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). The Trail Went Cold - Episode 284 - Earlene Barksdale

July 7, 1973. Tampa, Florida. The nude body of 34-year old Earlene Barksdale is discovered in the back office of the children’s clothing store she owns and she has been raped and shot in the head in an apparent robbery. Police soon focus on a suspect named Joseph Green Brown, who was involved in a similar robbery at another location on the exact same date. After he is implicated by an accomplice, Brown is charged, convinced and sentenced to death for Earlene’s murder. However, even though Brown comes dangerously close to being executed, the case against him is fraught with problems, so his conviction is eventually overturned and he is released from prison in 1987. Even though there seems to be evidence which implicates Earlene’s spouse as a possible alternate suspect, no one else is ever charged with her murder. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a very controversial and complex murder case which has contained a number of shocking developments over the past five decades. The Trail Went Cold - Episode 283 - Gordon Page Jr. & Kristi Krebs

May 26, 1991. Grand Rapids, Michigan. 28-year old Gordon Page Jr. is discovered to be missing from his room at the Cascade Foster Care Home, a residential treatment centre for individuals with autism. Since a man matching Gordon’s description is seen hitchhiking on a nearby interstate, it is theorized that he escaped from the home in order to travel to Florida to see his family. There are additional reported eyewitness sightings of Gordon and a baseball card collection which is believed to belong to him is found underneath an overpass in the weeks following his disappearance, but he continues to remain a missing person. August 10, 1993. Mendocino County, California. 22-year old Kristi Krebs leaves her job at a pizza parlour, but never returns home and her abandoned car is found stuck in some mud in a remote wooded area the following day. The scene mirrors an incident from three years earlier where a car Kristi was driving caught fire in another wooded area and she suffered a psychotic trauma-related breakdown which caused her to temporarily lose her memory. Since there are multiple reports of a disoriented-looking woman matching Kristi’s description hitchhiking throughout the country, there is fear that she suffered another breakdown and completely forgot who she was, but Kristi is never found. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a pair of missing persons cases which were featured on “Unsolved Mysteries” and are still without a resolution three decades later. If you have any information about the disappearance of Gordon Page Jr., please contact the Kent County Sheriff’s Office at (616) 632-6100. November 25, 1991. Middle Township, New Jersey. 11-year old Mark Himebaugh leaves his residence in order to watch firefighters extinguishing a brush fire, but he never returns home. A search turns up Mark’s left shoe on a nearby beach and while eyewitnesses place Mark in the company of multiple unidentified individuals on the afternoon he went missing, he cannot be found. Over one year later, a witness tells police that a sex offender named Thomas Butcavage screened a video of himself sexually assaulting Mark before confessing to his murder, but the alleged videotape is never found and no evidence links him to Mark’s disappearance. The Trail Went Cold - Episode 281 - Byron Carr

November 12, 1988. Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. After he is not heard from in over 24 hours, the body of 36-year old Byron Carr is discovered inside the bedroom of his residence. He has been strangled with a towel and stabbed with a kitchen knife and the words, “I will kill again”, are scrawled on the bedroom wall. The evidence indicates that Byron had sex with another man before he was murdered, but even though the perpetrator left his DNA behind, all attempts to match it to anyone are unsuccessful. Over the years, investigators receive a number of compelling tips, including the name of an accomplice who supposedly helped the killer cover up the crime, but the killer himself remains unidentified. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will travel back to our podcast’s home country of Canada to explore the only known unsolved homicide from Prince Edward Island. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Charlottetown Police Service at (902) 629-4172 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). The Trail Went Cold - Episode 280 - Peter Watts

January 18, 1976. Colwyn Bay, Wales. The family of 15-year old Peter Watts returns to their residence and discovers he has left behind a note to say that he went to see a friend. Ten hours later, Peter’s unconscious body is discovered on the Euston Road underpass in London over 250 miles away and he dies after being rushed to the hospital. While Peter’s injuries are consistent with a fall from a great height, his body and clothing appear to have been washed, suggesting that he was seriously injured at another location before someone placed his body on the underpass. While an inquest jury rules that Peter’s death was murder, there are no conclusive answers about who killed him or why he made a lengthy trip to London to begin with. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a truly baffling mystery from the United Kingdom about a victim who wound up dead at a location they had no known connection to. The Trail Went Cold - Episode 279 - Colonel Philip Shue

April 16, 2003. Kendall County, Texas. 54-year old Colonel Philip Shue, who works as a staff psychiatrist for the United States Air Force, leaves his residence to drive to work. Two-and-a-half hours later, Colonel Shue’s car is seen driving erratically down the interstate before it crashes into some trees and Shue is found dead in the driver’s seat. Even though his death is ruled to be a staged suicide, there are a number of suspicious discrepancies, as duct tape is wrapped around Shue’s wrists and feet, a large gash is carved into his chest, and both of his nipples have been removed. There is suspicion that Shue’s ex-wife had him tortured and killed in order to cash in on some life insurance policies, but even though a judge later makes a public ruling at a civil trial that Shue was the victim of a homicide, his official cause of death is never changed. Did Colonel Shue intentionally crash his car and take his own life, or did was killed while attempting to escape from someone who did him harm? We’re going to explore both sides of this perplexing case on this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, which chronicles one of the most bizarre unexplained deaths you’ll ever hear about.
