Dry desert. No running water, no electricity. All on foot, with some chariots. A lot of tents, made of Egyptian cloth.Feel the heat, taste the dust on your tongue, feel the sting of both sun and dust on your eyes. It’s hot – it’s a desert. Rocks and dirt and hills of stone in every direction.Grey is the earth beneath you; blue is the hot sky above you.In front, behind, to your left, to your right – countless men, women, children just like you, camping and making the best of their circumstances.Having just escaped slavery. Free at last.Free? Yes. Free to die, it seems.They don’t know it yet, but they will all die in this desert. They will wander for 40 years to reach a destination that is 11 travel days away. All this, because they adamantly refused to follow the God who had delivered them out of slavery.As we meet them today, they are at one of their first stops.
