Your Brain Is Just Trying To Keep You Safe (The Velvet)

Kelly is joined by her "brain therapist," certified LENS practitioner, Sheri Rowney, to talk about neurofeedback therapy and why it works. Sheri breaks down the way the wiring in the brain works and what happens to our brains when we experience something traumatic to alter that wire.  "The interesting thing about our brains is that they are literally always just trying to keep us safe. Sometimes they just go about the wrong way of doing that and it impedes our normal function."  Kelly spoke openly about how this particular therapy has helped her dramatically in the last few months after feeling like she was "sleepwalking" through life and unable to find any motivation or drive or even normal thought processes.  "I just kept saying, I just want to feel like myself again and when you told me that 95% of my brain was in Delta (sleeping state) and that you could wake it back up, it was the biggest relief I've felt in years." Sheri describes the massive amount of patients she sees that have been deeply impacted by "Covid Brain" and talks through what is happening with that virus and our brains. Website and contact: http://harmonizedbraincenterstn.comFollow Velvet's Edge on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/velvetsedge/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What Is Happening to Our Brains?  (The Edge)

With all of the convo coming to the table about our culture's rise in mental health issues, Kelly and Chip bring forth their own questions about the toll social media can take on our brains and mental and emotional well being. Kelly discusses an article she read about influencer culture and relates it to her own struggle with that position and the deep impact it had on her mental and emotional health. Chip brings forth the discussion about the algorithm's impact on our brains and also the constant overstimulation created in our culture. They tie in the overall impact of constantly absorbing information unconsciously, reference why gun violence has brought this to the forefront of mine and even sing a little bit to lighten the heavy mood as of late.    Email your feedback to theedge@velvetsedge.com    Article reference: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/11/style/lee-tilghman-influencer.htmlFollow Velvet's Edge on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/velvetsedge/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Simple Answers, Easy Steps and a Message of Hope (The Edge)

Kelly here, hi. I am reposting this podcast this week because I simply do not know what else to do. After a mass shooting, that ended in 7 people (including 3 children) dead, just down the road from my home in Nashville this week, I do not have the words yet to talk about this again. Many of my close friends and specifically their children were greatly impacted by this shooting and to say that this issue being in your backyard brings it to the forefront of your mind is an understatement. I will be back to discuss more of what that is like at some point in the future, but in the meantime, I’m begging you all-no matter where you stand politically- put it to the side. This is bigger than your ego or own personal feelings. This is our children’s lives, safety and freedom. “Listen to the podcast, take the actionable steps, but also compromise and try to work together.   This is a political issue, but I think we have to do what we can to lay that down and start working together. We aren’t getting anywhere with otherwise. We all do it, but if more innocent children dying isn’t the time to unite and come together, I don’t know what is.  Sending love and healing energy to everyone in Nashville right now.  ------ Retired US Army Veteran, gun owner and gun violence survivor, Melody McFadden, joins Kelly and Chip to simplify the conversation about gun laws and gun violence.   "I don't want your guns, because I don't want to give you my guns."   Melody tells the stories of loss she has faced at the hands of unsafe gun use and also how simple it could be to make those moments safe.   On the date this was recorded in mid June, 3,599 people in America had been shot and killed since the mass shooting in Uvalde, TX on May 24.   "You have to get a driver's license to drive a car, why shouldn't we have safety measures about owning guns?"   Melody is full of love, faith and helpful small action steps we can all take to make our country a safe place to live.   Website: everytown.org    Follow Velvet's Edge on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/velvetsedge/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Life with Gender Incongruence (The Edge)

Dr. Shafer speaks from his medical experience working with patients dealing with gender incongruence and educates the duo on the multi- layered process that isn’t typically discussed in our culture. He gives examples and some shocking statics, using science and medicine to hopefully bring light to a community that many of us still know little about. This podcast is meant to shine light on gender incongruence, transgender people and their friends and families to better understand their battles, feelings and lifelong processes that are so often overlooked in media and politics.    Resources: Trevorproject.org LGBTQ provider profile  AAFP    Follow Kelly: @velvetsedge  Follow Chip: @chipdorsch Email: theedge@velvetsedge.com  Follow Velvet's Edge on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/velvetsedge/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sensitive Women Becoming Liberated Leaders (The Velvet)

Kelly talks to Ray Taffe, founder of SELM (Sensually Embodied Leadership Methodology). Ray is a "teacher for high achieving women ready to deepen the overall quality and intimacy of their lives, in every area." She discusses the inner protectors that we use to stay safe and how these protectors may show up and sabotage our present day. The women also break down how to make decisions from your body and intuition vs. your mind. Ray describes how she teaches clients to use their own orgasmic energy to move pain and blocked energy out of their bodies and open up sensitive feeling energy and creativity. Ray also teaches on how to become aware of the emotion or sensations we may be avoiding and "understanding how life is going to keep presenting opportunities FOR YOU to feel that sensation."  Socials: @raytaaffe Follow Velvet's Edge on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/velvetsedge/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
