We all have the essential information required to go from sick to healthy. So why are we so sick? To start, we trust doctors with our lives and those we love and care about. Yet, medical workers are vastly overworked and often must improve in certain care areas. For instance, many trust doctors to guide them in nutrition, not realizing that most practicing physicians lack nutrition training. Many doctors complete around 2-4 hours, averaging only 19 hours over four years. In fact, a study published in the journal Academic Medicine found that in the 2008-2009 academic year, just 27% of 105 medical schools met the minimum requirement of 25 hours of teaching on nutrition. However, there is minimal political will to change this dysfunctional system, let alone have the FDA recognize food as medicine.
