There’s a story where a father tells his son that there are two wolves fighting inside him, one fighting for good and one for evil. The son asks “which one will win?” The answer is “whichever one you feed.” I think we are usually torn between doing our own will and doing the Lord’s, and trying to decide whether we will work for our own glory or God’s. Fortunately, the Scriptures have some things to say about that. Victor and I talked about a great example from the Old Testament: King David and King Saul. When we decide to follow God, it’s super important that we begin to foster a disgust of sin. But sometimes it’s easier to be disgusted at others’ sins rather than our own, and that causes us to not take our own sins seriously. One of the things we, as guys, hate to talk about is past wounds. But we all carry pain from our past, and if we don’t deal with it we’re going to hurt other people. Victor and I talked this week about some of the wounds I have in my own life, and what I’m doing to heal from them. We all have sins we struggle with, and most of us have addictions we just can’t seem to get rid of. Lent can be a good time to cleanse our lives, but we first need to realize that we are slaves to these sins. And when you’re a slave to something, it’s really hard to get away from it. That’s why Victor and I decided to talk this week about dealing with the fact that we often have the heart of a slave towards our own sin.
