My Thoughts Monday #101- Your Metrics Actually Need To Matter

“Do your metrics matter? And if they do matter are they driving decisions?”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance, the team behind the NordBord, ForceDecks, the GroinBar and HumanTrak. With all their products providing evidence-based solutions to performance professionals so they can get the right information, for the right decision, at the right time. Make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.comIn this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share a few take homes from Nate Brookreson's KILLER talk from The 2019 Seminar. Nate shared with us a case study in return to play with a student athlete, and his talk had a huge plot twist in the end, but there are a few huge take homes from his talk. The first of which is, as Dan John said, "keep the plan the plan," but be ready to deviate and make alterations. The second is that your metrics need to matter, and when you take them to drive decisions you need to keep taking them, whether you think they’re going to tell you what you want them to or not. My final take away was that it’s not about you, so stay humble and know that we can all be better. Our job is about the athletes, and the field is bigger than each of us so kudos to Nate for being so open and bringing a fantastic talk!We are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows. Episode 200- Jonas Dodoo- Projection, Reactivity, and Switching

“The things that matter are always going to come down to movement efficiency.”“It all comes down to your body’s ability to project.”“Have you organized your body, your center of mass, and actually the timing of firing to make sure you go in that direction.”“We want it to be complicated. We can’t believe that running very fast is simple because when we try to do it as individuals we realize how difficult it can be, but everyone can get faster. Not everyone can be fast, everyone can get faster.”This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. All others, or to learn more about the kBox, kPulley and flywheel training, please go to their website at: https://exxentric.com/.Today we are joined by Jonas Dodoo to discuss training transfer if relation to speed development. After a brief intro Jonas dives right into what he sees that matters when it comes developing movement skills with athlete. This includes his idea of projection, reactivity, and switching, and the role of the weight room in assisting these three aspects of movement. This leads him to discussing the idea of transducing force as opposed to absorbing force. Next, Jonas talks about how this fits into the rehab world, and how it impacts how he works with these injured athletes to assist them to return back to competition. Jonas then runs down the rabbit hole of coaching and communication, and why he feels he has had some success within those subsets of our field. We then discuss the mental aspect of training speed, and where Jonas sees some limitations to the thoughts on this that are very prevalent in high level sport. My Thoughts Monday #99- Make The Performance Triangle of Sleep, Training, and Nutrition an Equilateral One

“We need to make this triangle with three points. One point is sleep, one point is training, and one point is their training, and we need to make that triangle as equilateral as possible.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance, the team behind the NordBord, ForceDecks, the GroinBar and HumanTrak. With all their products providing evidence-based solutions to performance professionals so they can get the right information, for the right decision, at the right time. Make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.comThis weeks My Thoughts Monday is a review of a huge take home from Cheryl Zonkowski’s talk. She discussed how nutrition and training don’t matter much if you’re athlete’s aren’t sleeping. This really spurred me to change how I look at those three. In the past I’ve looked at them as three individual entities, but if we look at them as the same triangle we can now look at which one is negatively impacting the other, or where we are putting in the most energy and where we can do better by the athlete. Although we may have some limitations, it’s partly our job to make this triangle as equilateral as possible through better education, and by leading the athlete’s to make better decisions to improve those aspectsWe are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows. Episode 199- Cam Josse- Reverse Engineering The Entire Game

“Instead of giving them a bunch of coaching cues at first, give them the principle of the idea first and work backwards from there.”“The what, then follows, the why”“Everybody says work backward from the game, but not everyone has a road map to do that.”This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Cam starts out by discussing with us how the voyage from reading a book to writing a book with Fergus Connolly has changed his outlook on training. This leads him directly into the idea of reverse engineering the sport, what that means to the principles of his training program, and where are some mistakes that he has observed some coaches making with this. He includes how teaching them the tactics and the idea’s of creating and constraining space has changed not just how he teaches his athletes movement skills, but has improved how his athlete’s understand what they’re trying to get them to do. Cam then talks about the cognitive and psychological aspects of training, and how that can be a huge factor in the transfer of training to competition.
