Meet Suki, The Siri For Healthcare
What if we had an invisible, Alexa-like assistant that functioned like a medical intern, doing the scut and freeing us to be present for our patients? Punit Soni, founder and CEO of Suki, is building exactly that. Will it actually work, or is it one more of Silicon Valley's failed healthcare promises? We dive in!
In this episode we discuss how technology can actually enable the human relationship that's been lost in healthcare. We talk about the challenges and opportunities of having a voice-activated AI that empowers rather than obstructs. Would you let it into your exam room? After talking to Punit and his COO and fellow UCSF alum Dr. Nathan Gunn, and after seeing the demo, I have little doubt that the future of Health 3.0 is gonna be bright (with only a 30% risk of robot apocalypse).

My friend Chris Lindland (founder of Betabrand) wants to change how we dress—and therefore feel and act—at work. In this wide-ranging interview we talk about how to turn a side hustle into a calling with purpose, the beauty of letting the PEOPLE decide what they want and then building it, self-expression in conservative medical settings (tatoos, clothes, hair), and how healthcare and creativity intersect. Dr. Amy Baxter has dedicated her career to alleviating human suffering. In this remarkable and wide-ranging discussion she teaches about the research on needle fear and whether we might, with good intentions, be creating a lost generation of needle-phobic antivaxxers. She discusses her work on non-opioid pain treatment modalities, the challenges for women in medicine and business, transitioning from academic medical practice to being an entrepreneur, and much more. Antifragility and Health 3.0
In this solo podcast I discuss the concept of "antifragility" as applied to children, then our healthcare system as a whole. Health 1.0 and it's transformation to 2.0 are reviewed, along with the new emergent of Health 3.0 and some illustrative lessons from my now-closed clinic, Turntable Health. I touch on the moral injury we're calling burnout as well as the curative principles of the Health 3.0 vision.
It's philosophy, sociology, medicine, and curse words all in one bizarre package ;-)

You Can Help Make Better Doctors, Act NOW
Dr. Paul Teirstein returns to discuss an American Board of Medical Specialties report finding that Maintenance of Certification (MOC) testing is a huge burden on already overloaded physicians without providing real benefit for patient care. But they aren't going to CHANGE anything...unless we all weigh in! ABMS is asking for public comment by January 15th and WE MUST lend our voices, ZPac!
Please listen and consider leaving your comments for ABMS via links here: https://nbpas.org/respond-to-vision-commission-onerous-moc-components/
They want to hear EVERYONE'S input (not just doctors) by January 15th! Let's stop feeling powerless and take our profession back, for the sake of our patients and for each other.
Dr. Teirstein is the Chief of Interventional Cardiology at Scripps and is the President and Founder of the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons (NBPAS), an alternative board certification organization for physicians.

On The Perils of Concrete Thinking
In this episode we discuss the concrete thinking used by anti-vaccine activists, and how the damage done might apply to other spheres as well. Since Tom Hinueber is involved, we also discuss free will and choice (particularly in the realms of depression and mental illness), cognitive behavioral therapy and distortions of thinking, common-enemy vs. common-humanity identity politics, what antivaxxers get RIGHT about our healthcare system, the discrete nature of consciousness, how to end suffering, and much more. It's 2019 people, enjoy yourselves!
