Katharine Halpin: Intuition in Business Alignment

Katharine Halpin grew up in Mississippi in a dysfunctional family. Because she had demonstrated so much leadership at home, her Dad took her to work on Saturday mornings in his CPA firm when she was about 9-years old. From the baggage she accumulated working for her Dad, she has built a body of work to accelerate the growth of people, teams and companies. She left her CPA career in 1995 to fill a void she saw everyday in the workplace. Leaders were focused on the financial and legal aspects of corporate growth but never focused on the people aspects. She is an expert in getting the right people in the right roles, focused on the right priorities. Katharine has been bringing order to chaos since she was 5-years old and she said to herself while standing in her Momma's messy kitchen, "Some body has got to make a few decisions around here!"In this episode, Dean Newlund and Katharine discuss:Addressing people issues by developing good habits in self-alignment, positive mindset, personal actions, and team alignment.Arriving early and brain dumping for more rational and calmer thought.Help everyone by giving them the tools to be successful at work.Needs assessment, finding out where the needs and gaps are in business, and helping to build a better future. Key Takeaways:Give up the multitasking, stop racing around, slow down to take care of yourself, and enjoy your family.Companies sometimes prohibit growth when their people are in a frenzied maniac mode and don’t feel they have time to balance work and family.Get out into nature and elevate your heart rate every day.Arrive early, brain dump, calendar, commitments review, project work time, 5p’s, strategic think time, problem solve, delegate, close the gaps. "Turning obstacles into opportunities and bringing order to chaos." —  Katharine Halpin  See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7IConnect with Katharine Halpin:  Website: HalpinCompany.comFacebook: Katharine HalpinLinkedIn: Katharine HalpinPhone: 602-266-1961Book: Respond Not React Playbook          Alignment for Success  Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370Show notes by Podcastologist: Kristen Braun  Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Scott Gonzalez: Energy in Insight

There are two quotes that set the tone for this week’s The Business of intuition: “How you do one thing is how you do everything.”, which I heard from a yoga instructor, and, “wherever you go, there you are”, which is the title of a book by Jon Kabat-Zinn.   Both quotes tell us:  We can never escape ourselves,Every action, relationship, experience contains a lesson,And, if we want to change the outside world, we first need to change ourselves. My guest this week on The Business of Intuition teaches based on these principles.  Mr. Scott Gonzalez is a 7th degree black belt and owner of Desert Dragons Kenpo Karate. Scott conducts Kenpo seminars worldwide, and teaches hundreds of students, young and old, every week.  His art is not just Kenpo Karate, but the art of facilitating, seeing and drawing out the best in people, and helping his students make the connection between what happens on the karate mat and what happens at work, school or at home with family.  In this fascinating discussion Scott shares many gems about life, art, intuition and reaching one’s highest and best potential.   In this episode, Dean Newlund and Scott Gonzalez discuss: Be present. This is where all innovation, creativity and connection happen,Take people where they are at, not where you want them to be,Help people transition from analytical to intuitive thinking. Provide a foundation (for karate that might be a foundation of techniques, kicking, striking, footwork), then encourage learning through asking questions, and give them time to learn at their own pace,Develop a personal relationship with everyone you work with,“Don’t be in fight”, when confronted with conflict. Negative energy meeting negative energy only creates more.  You can still maintain boundaries and hold people accountable without being in the fight. In fact, it’s more effective if you don’t match their negative energy,Create a personal challenge.  People won’t push themselves, won’t have the desire to transform if they don’t have a goal that will challenge them,Learn through your body. The physical holds the unconscious patterns and blocks.  By introducing new movement patterns, you break old physical and emotional patterns. Key Takeaways:Being in a state of flow while assessing clients. Having a heightened sense of awareness, accessing the intuition, tuning into your feeling, and senses.Tuning into your mind and body’s ability to meld around things. Be able to move and not absorb negative energy, instead, allowing it to go through or around you.Use language in a way that helps people think in a different way through using their senses using their brains to create an image or story. Build a personal relationship by giving your undivided attention. Make every person that you are working with feel special, even if it’s just for a few seconds. Create direction by providing a challenge in building toward larger goals to enable a stronger person to emerge.  "Combat is a battle of energy. Defend yourself but don’t engage in with the energy of anger and revenge.”   —  Scott Gonzalez  See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Scott Gonzalez:  Website: DesertDragonsAZ.comEmail: Scott@Desertdragonsaz.comFacebook: Scott Gonzalez                 Desert Dragons Kenpo KaratePhone: 623-670-7979  Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370Show notes by Podcastologist: Kristen Braun  Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. We can only be grateful in the moment and that moment ties us to the ability to be in the present.Key Takeaways:When do coaches tune into their intuition? For an experienced coach, it happens with hello. Listening and sensing in a physical sense who the person is and who they are being.Always set an intention to be fully present for your client. Some people just need a safe space and someone listening without judgment so they can think their ideas through out loud.Device withdrawal: take time to disconnect and be present.People want and need a personal connection. They need to be heard and understood, through an empathetic connection. "People value a time in their day where they can just be who they are and be present." —  Susan Klein  See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7IConnect with Susan Klein:  Website: MFILeadership.com    SucessTechnologiesinc.comTwitter: @CoachKleinLinkedIn: Susan KleinEmail: SusanKlein@mfileadership.com  Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370Show notes by Podcastologist: Kristen BraunAudio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. “Access to talented and creative people is to modern business what access to coal and iron ore was to steel-making”, according to author and thought-leader, Richard Florida.  A common response we hear is that creativity is limited to a small group of people with particular talents.  The misperception is that most people don’t want to be creative, couldn’t do it if asked, and would be very uncomfortable in an environment where creativity was expected of them.  This belief is false.   Every human is endowed with an incredible capacity for creativity and innovation.  The board agreement among economists is that economic growth comes from creative or knowledge-based occupations. And, when we stifle that creativity by old-style command and control management mindsets and practices, we risk losing talented people. According to a 2004 Economist magazine article, “The real foreign threat to the America economy is not terrorism; it’s the way we make creative and talented people stop wanting to come here.”My guest on The Business of Intuition is a person who makes a living being creative.  Doug Diehl is a nationally recognized painter who is known for his evocative landscape scenes of the Southwest. Doug has also started and led many small businesses and is a voracious reader of history, art and philosophy.    In this fascinating discussion Doug describes:How he prepares himself to be creative,The way in which intuition is a function of creativity,How he balances both the right and left sides of the brain at the same time,How painting a picture is similar to building a company’s vision. Most importantly Doug gives us real tools to tap into our intuition and creativity and how to apply them to our lives at work. Finding inspiration in a non analytical way.Getting out of the analytical side of your brain so intuition can integrate into your process. Key Takeaways:A person’s biggest hindrance is their ego and pride. It blinds you blinds you to mistakes and new courses.Intuition and a visionary mindset, infuses passion while overriding ego and pride.Strive to evolve so that my art, my business, and my life is improving.Examining life from different perspectives and thought processes helps us look at life through different lenses. "You go beyond the rules, where intuition is. You learn to break the rules and how to break them without breaking the object." —  Doug Diehl  See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Doug Diehl:  Website: DouglasDiehlArtist  Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions.
