All seven nations are mentioned by name in order to assure the Israelites that all their enemies would be driven out of the land. This was to make way for Israel's possession of the entire land of Canaan. For the Christian, the “sting” of death has been removed, but the pain of dying still remains. So what comfort does Christ promise to Christians during the process of dying?

Christ is the antitype of the ark. He is the only way to the heavenly Canaan. The way to glory through the Jordan River (a type of death) is an untrodden and trackless path. All men must eventually go through the river of death, but only once. And those who pass through it have never gone that way before.

Joshua was instructed by the Lord to appoint one man from each of the twelve tribes of Israel. Likewise, the Greater Joshua, who is Jesus, after having passed through the agony of his death on the cross and having opened the Heavenly Canaan to all of true Israel, appointed his twelve apostles to construct the Eternal Memorial of Holy Scripture to ensure that the knowledge of his life, death, and resurrection might be passed on to all future generations.
