Rana is a seasoned entrepreneurial professional with five successful start-ups in different verticals and a diverse 35-year business career under his belt. Having transitioned to the capital markets in 2010, Rana took two companies public, and these were the biggest Canadian venture deals of 2018. Curaleaf raised $520 million and was a near billion reverse takeover (RTO). While Harvest Health and Recreation was yet another impressive billion RTO, Rana also took Blue Lagoon Resources, the gold-focused company of which he is the current CEO and which had one of the top-performing stocks for 2019, public in the following year. Outside of business, Rana is a well-known philanthropist. Jon talks with Jacob Saphier, Co-owner of Donut Shop Design, Detroit-based design studio, about the power of design, Detroit and customization. Donut Shop is a Detroit-based design studio founded in 2017 by friends Ian Klipa and Jacob Saphier. They work on a variety of projects including furniture, lighting, and spaces. While their portfolio spans multiple disciplines and styles, it is unified by a desire to build upon traditional craft. Ian and Jake come from a sculptural background and are largely self taught when it comes to machining and fabrication. This duality leads to unconventional approaches in their work. Donut Shop designs and produces the majority of it's work in house. This means that the completion of a project is rarely far from its conception both physically and mentally. This results in a practical approach to design, where the processes involved in creating work are always a consideration. In addition to their own production capabilities, Donut Shop relies on the area's wealth of industrial heritage to realize their designs utilizing both local services and suppliers. Jason Yourofsky started in the Mortgage industry in 1997 fresh out of Michigan State University and went to work with his Senior V.P. Jeremy Stybel. Jason learned the ins and outs of the mortgage industry at a "small lender" for four years, before founding Atlantis Mortgage in 2001. Atlantis Mortgage was formed under the premise of "No Closing Cost Purchase or Refinance." Jason noticed people were looking for an alternative to the big bank's fees and cost, so we created the no cost no fee purchase or refinance. Atlantis Mortgage has closed well over $2 billion dollars in mortgages within the state of Michigan. Outside of the state, they closed another $250 million in refinances and purchases. Family and free time: The majority of Jason's free time is spent at home with his family. Jason has a lovely wife, daughter, and two Airedale Terriers. Jason is a huge pet lover and quite often his dog sits on the couch with him while he works. His family spends time up in Charlevoix, Michigan at their cottage. They often enjoy taking vacations anyplace warm, and it is mandatory that it has a beach & nice pool. Jason's hobbies are collecting rare spirits, gardening and saving people money.
