Mirrorless VS DSLR: RAWtalk 147

The Mirrorless VS DSLR debate seems to be heating up as of late. For the last few years people have been championing their switch from DSLR to all different types of Mirrorless Systems. It’s now time for me to start to educate myself on all things Mirrorless so I can share my finds with everyone out there. I am in no way opposed to the emerging technologies but what I am opposed to are the people who are quick to jump ship because the wind is blowing one way. This week I dedicated the entire Flying Solo potation of the show to questions about Mirrorless VS DSLR. My goal was to see what was on your minds as consumers and help to answer as many questions as I could. HOYA is this weeks sponsor. They just announced their new line of HD3 Series of professional filters designed for extreme environmental conditions. They are 4X Stronger than standard optional glass and 800% yes 800% harder than previous generations. They also have the ability to make water bead right off in case you are shooting gin a wet environment. The truth of the matter is, if you are someone who feels the need to add a UV filter to the end of your lens you can not go wrong with this new series. There are far more benefits to using a Hoya HD3 then simply blocking UV. It can cut down on glare which can lead to a sharper better image. It’s easier to clean when it gets dirty because of it’s special coating. It does protect your front element and much more. Check out more information right here. Photo News with Stephen has started to take on a very interesting life of it’s own. Stephen hits us with some really solid news stories this week and Todd and I fill in with some color where needed. Gear of the week plays perfectly into the title of this weeks show where we showcased a few different brands of popular mirrorless cameras. Like I said above, flying solo was dedicated solely to discussing mirrorless technologies and where I think the market is going. We wrapped the show up with the Wheel of FRO so be sure to check out if you were the lucky wheel winner. Thanks to RODE, Atomos, LEXAR (the official card of RAWtalk) and everyone else on the wheel of FRO. Are my eyes RED: RAWtalk 146

No my eyes weren’t red but I did fly in on a RED EYE the morning of RAWtalk. I left Vegas on a 12:30 AM flight that got me back into Philly at 8am. EST. From there I had a few meetings to take care of and without sleep it was now time to film the latest episode of RAWtalk. To put it mildly, I was a little tired for the show. This weeks show is brought to you by ATOMOS. Wether we are filming RAWtalk, recording 4k or simply using it as a monitor we LOVE OUR ATOMOS’s. We use the shogun which lets us record 4k out of cameras and lets us record longer than the 20 or 30 min limits of DSLR’s. If you need something that lets you do what I mentioned above please check out Atomos.com. RANT: Shitty house photos that Realtors take that they think will help them sell their houses. GET WITH the times, either learn to take quality images or hire someone who will. Photos news with Stephen this week was not interrupted my me or Todd. If you believe that I have a bridge for sale I would like to sell you. We FLEW Solo as well as spun the Wheel of FRO. Don’t forget that new shows go LIVE every Monday as both audio and full video. Please subscribe on iTunes so the latest episodes will download automatically. 00:00:00 - Show Intro 00:07:47 - Photoshop World Recap 00:13:56 - Realtor Rant 00:18:00 - Photo News 00:52:24 - Flying Solo 01:19:20 - Wheel of Fro

Trey Ratcliff aka Mr HDR the interview: RAWtalk 145

It’s been a long time in the making and the stars finally aligned to allow me to interview Trey Ratcliff right here in the loft. Trey is one of the most well known photographers online and is most commonly associated with HDR photography (high dynamic range). As man¥ of you know I have been very outspoken about not liking HDR in the past. Most of this stems from seeing really bad HDR. Trey on the other hand does HDR right and tries to share his methods with as many people as possible. No that does not mean I will be doing HDR anytime soon. But you can not deny the success and you have to give major credit where credit is due. Check out the FULL Interview at 33:54 This weeks episode is brought to you by RODE microphones. As you know we use the RODE broadcaster microphones each and every week. RODE not only makes these high end mics but they have other extremely affordable shot gun, condensers, broadcast and even lavalier offerings. If you entered the MyRodeReel.com competition RODE wanted me to let you know to keep an eye on your mailbox for a FREE microphone that will be showing up. How cool is that, not only do they run a free contest but they end up sending every participant a FREE microphone. We finished off the show with Wheel of FRO as we also do and want to thank all the sponsors who’s names are up on the board. Oh how I HATE change, but change was needed: RAWtalk 144

Let’s start off with what has changed. First you may notice my hair has a more round shaped look. That’s because for the first time in 8 and a half years I sat in the barbers chair and got my hair trimmed. My goal was to give it a nice shape, think basketball aka nice and round. I think e succeeded there though change does not come easy for me. On top of that the crew and I decide to do a “reset” of the RAWtalk angles. We wanted to make the center camera tighter which involved Stephen and I not sitting directly across from each other. We switched up the position for the tables which made room for Todd’s seat and more room all around in general. It may seem like a large change but it really makes a difference in the end product. This weeks show was brought to you by GraphicStock. You have heard us talk about VideoBocks and AudioBlocks but to go along with those two you have GraphicStock. A place where you can get over 250,000 Graphics, images, vectors, icons, buttons and more. Sometimes you need to pull stock images for your videos or design projects so I suggest you check out GraphicStock right here. Photo News brings you the latest news from the prior week in Photography. We discuss it, comment on it and bring light to the most relevant and popular stories in photography. Gear of the week this week came from Canon who sent us their mega zoom Point and Shoot camera to play with. We will take this out of the box and give it a look in the not to distant future. Last week when we spun the Wheel of FRO we did not have any names to choose from so I decided that this week we would select two people from the “Flying Solo” portion. The first person selected won the prize form last week which was something from LEXAR. With one SPIN of the wheel we finally landed on the Grand Prize which was the Atomos Ninja 2 valued at $699.99. I don’t recall which show started the Wheel of FRO with the biggest prize option but after at least 100 shows we finally hit the big one. Thank you guys so much for watching each and every week. Don’t forget that new shows come out each Monday both as Audio and Video for your listening and viewing pleasures. Lexar is the official memory card of RAWtalk. This Dr. literally CUT my eyes out: RAWtalk 143 an interview with my Eye Dr.

Eyes, they are so very integral to every day life and even more so when your business revolves around seeing the world and capturing it. Many people don’t know that I was born with an eye condition that causes my eyes to shake which in turn hurts my vision. I have been seeing one of the best eye doctors in the world named Harold P. Koller since I was a small child. In fact he did surgery on me that involved cutting the muscles in my eyes and relocating them into another position. I’ve always wanted to sit down with Dr. Koller for a discussion because I know he can pass along some fantastic information. This interview isn’t just about my eyes, it’s about how you should be taking care of yours. What are the warning signs to look out for to determine if there may be an eye issue and what to do if that happens. Check out the interview at 51:58 to hear out entire discussion. This weeks episode is brought to you by TOKINA. Tokina is a lens manufacture with deep roots into lens manufacturing. They make consumer glass, professional glass as well as super high end optics for the movie industry. I got to hold onto one of their cinematic lenses at NAB this year and all I can say is WOW what a fantastic hunk of glass. They may not have the largest lineup of lenses but the ones they do have are worth a peak. They just released a 24-70 2.8 lens that if you’re tight on cash and need a killer full frame lens this one could be for you. Check it out right here http://bit.ly/1I3AEVt Stephen brings us the weeks “Photo NEWS” each episode where he takes the largest stories around and shares them. Todd is back this week with his commentary and we continue to test out the GoPro Hero4 Session on his angle. Gear of the week this weeks brings us the Tilta by Ikan which is an affordable rig if you are in the market for one. It’s not the cheapest and it’s not the most expensive, it falls right in the middle and may be the right fit for you. BorrowLenses was kind enough to send me out a Canon XC10 to test out, so we discuss that and a few more things. Wheel Of FRO got spun but I honestly didn’t have a name prepared which means I will pick two people for next weeks episode. One will spin the wheel FRESH and the other will win the LEXAR prize from this week. Thanks to everyone out there who continues to support the show including the sponsors on the Wheel of FRO. Why I signed the FOO FIGHTERS Photo Contract: RAWtalk 142

Over the past month or so there has been a lot of concern over many larger bands photo contracts. One in particular is the Foo Fighters photo release you must sign before shooting them. Yes the contact is over the top, yes it discusses turning over the copyrights but no it’s not really as big of a deal as you think. What’s going on is people are blowing the release way out of proportion. You have a choice, you can sign it and shoot or you could do neither. It’s no skin off the bands back since you would simply be shooting the same photos as everyone else. What you have to understand is the contract doesn’t say you can’t use the images, it doesn’t say they will take your ownership right from under you. It says they have the ability to do whatever they want with your images if and only if they ever ask you for them. Do you see any spaces on the contract that asks for contact info, NO. So why did I choose to sign the contract? One, I was work for hire, meaning I was getting paid to shoot the photos. Two if someone is paying me to use the photos they need the rights to use the photos. Three, what else would I be doing? Sitting at home wishing I was shooting something opposed to actually putting myself in a position to be successful. I never expected to end up shooting backstage, it just happened. But the truth of the matter is I can not share those images without permission. You know what, I am fine with that right now because I was work for hire. I shouldn’t be able to just share the images without permission in this one case. I want to share them but our agreement said I needed them to sign off on it. The moral of the story is by me going out and shooting, aka doing my job, I may have opened up some very important doors. Am I guaranteed anything further, nope. That’s okay with me because guess what, I already got my foot in the door, I did the work and they LIKED IT, the liked it a lot. This weeks episode is brought to you by ATOMOS. If you are investing in anything 4K and you want to give yourself the ability to select a professional codec, you should check out the shogun. Not only will you be able to record in professional codecs, you have a larger screen, tons of pro functions, better audio and so much more. If you’re not in the market for a 4k camera and simply want an inexpensive way to record longer than 20 or 30 min you should check out the “bare bones” option starting at $395. Check it out right here http://www.atomos.com/ Stephen brings us this weeks photo stories and much much more. While Todd fills his chair and we test out “Todd cam” with the new GoPro Hero4 Session. Gear of the week is my very own I SHOOT RAW ThinkTank Photo Retrospective 30 bag. If you’re in the market for a shoulder bag, this is the one bag you will own for many years to come. It fits everything I need on a shoot and is built to last. You can pick up a bag right here http://bit.ly/rawbag Thank you to all our sponsors and everyone who checks out the show each week. Now with MORE Angles: RAWtalk 141

We already have four camera angles so what’s one more. This week we added the “Todd Cam” aka the camera pointed right at his face. We hope you enjoy the added angle. This weeks Plug is brought to you by RODE Microphones. As you know we use their Broadcaster mics each and every week even when we hit up the Grand Canyon. Rode makes mics ranking from simple wired lavs to USB and XLR and microphones for your DSLR. Check them out at RODE.com I have to say I have not laughed so much during a show ever. Adding Todd to the chair has really added a fun spark for Stephen and I and hope you enjoy the added flair as well. Stephen hit’s us with his Photo News Stories which include everything from Photos on Maps to the Foo Fights contract and beyond. This week was another Flying Solo Week. If you are curious how we select questions, this is how we do it. Generally the night before a flying solo show I place a video on Facebook requesting questions be submitted. From those questions I select the ones to be read on the show. One of the people who asked the question may get a chance to spin the Wheel of FRO!!! Thank you again for all your support and don’t forget to subscribe on iTunes. Thank you to all the sponsors including RODE, LEXAR, Atomos, Kenko Tokina and everyone on the Wheel Of Fro. Turning down $100k to chase a dream: RAWtalk 140 LIVE from VideoBlocks HQ

We made the 2:45 min trip down south to Reston Virginia to do a LIVE Mobile RAWtalk from the VideoBlocks HQ. Not only did we pack the house but I got to sit down with the founder and CEO of VideoBlocks Joel Holland. If you want to know how one person with an idea can go from living in his parents basement to selling a million DVD’s over the internet check out 33:14. Sitting down with Joel and hearing his story about turning down a six figure job out of college to try and turn and idea into a business was awe-inspiring. This interview should light a fire under everybody’s ass out there. If you want something go after it. This weeks Episode is brought to you by VideoBlocks.com. Danny Clinch the Interview: RAWtalk 138

For the past 7 years I have been trying to track down Danny Clinch. Well, I finally had the chance to sit down with him for a very intimate interview recorded at his NYC studio. For those who don’t know Danny, let me just say he has defined music lifestyle and advertising photos over the past 20+ years. He is more than just a “music” photographer, he is a photographer who captures and shares images that tell stories. There are sometimes interviews where I need to talk a lot, this was not one of them. I was able to ask a question, sit back and listen to Danny share his entire world with us. Listen to how he got started. Listen to the dues he paid a long the way. And listen to how he continues to evolve time and time again to stay relevant in an ever changing world. This my friends, is a REAL RAWtalk, nothing was held back, nothing was glossed over, nothing was said with kid gloves. You can pick up a signed copy of “Still Moving” right here. http://dannyclinch.bigcartel.com/product/still-moving-book This weeks show PLUG was courtesy of AudioBlocks, VideoBlocks and GraphicStock. They have been a major partner over the past six months who have afforded us the ability to take our shows and videos to another level. On top of that they offer an amazing top notch service that we have been using for the past few years. Give their services a try, if you are a creator, the tools they have with make your content that much better. Get your trials right here. AudioBlocks.com/go/fro VideoBlocks.com/go/fro GraphicStock.com/go/fro This week we say goodbye to Sutter as he has become increasingly more busy with his own personal work and no longer will be able to join us each week. A BIG thank you for his work over the past year and good luck on your Alaskan adventure. Stephen hits us with 10, count them 10 photo news stories. As a note about this weeks show, we filmed four days earlier than normal since Stephen was headed on vacation for most of the week. Any major stories that were not mentioned this week will be included in the next episode. Be sure to subscribe for the podcast on iTunes so you can be noticed as soon as the episode goes live. Thank you all for your continued support of the show and the companies who help keep it FREE.
